Inspired by a thread on here which was what can you afford but you don’t spend money on..

showed what value people place on “stuff”

so obviously disregarding basic food, health stuff what do you value enough to splurge your hard earned cash on?

Botox

Really good conditioners and shampoo, prob my only real luxury but my hair likes it.

The cat. She has more scratch boxes than she knows what to do with. My last cat would get really excited when was bought a new scratch box (cute) so it's a hangover from that.

A jacuzzi bathtub big enough to fit two of us comfortably.

As I get older, I’ve decided I’m choosing one extra luxury per year. Last year I decided to always have fresh flowers in the house. This year, I’ve started getting my nails done.

Decent toilet paper. I have ibs and piles, I need a thick soft roll. I buy the thickest, softest I can find. We used recycled who gives a crap for years but I bought some back up stuff and realised how sore the other one was leaving me.

What brand is that please?

shhblackbag · 08/08/2026 22:31

Agree on the toilet paper. I refuse to buy cheap there.

And I buy books. A lot of them.

ojhdddhjs76 · 08/08/2026 22:34

I’d love to buy thicker toilet roll but I find our new build toilets eco flush system can’t handle it 🙄

Hidats/travel. We live frugally to afford it, travel frugally. It's my survival & I honestly don't think I'd be able to cope with the drudgery, and constant mental battering of my life without them.

Life is repetitious, pulled in so many directions, expectations, locked into work, chores, etc. Being ND day to day life is hard. From the moment we leave on holiday I feel free, no routine, no one telling me where I have to be, new scenery, adventures and just.... freedom.

Theatre and opera tickets - once we paid of our mortgage, as well as putting up my pension I could finally buy these fairly regularly. I get a lot of value out of this, and the opera is something I share with my oldest DC (as DH isn't into it at all). TBH, you can probably get cheaper tickets for the opera than than west end theatre - West End you're usually talking minimum £60 a seat, but often £80+. Even with money, I still usually get tickets on special offer where possible. Opera houses start nearer £35.

But with DC starting uni and us covering some of their costs to avoid a maintenance loan, I think I'm going to have to stop again. 😭

Blow dries 2-3 times a month. I colour my own hair and don’t bother with nails so this is my thing.

Good food and taxis. A taxi can save so much time vs public transport.

I spend more on these things now than I would have when younger:

Posh hair conditioner
Face serums
Botox
Tooth whitening treatment
Massages
Cleaner
Taxis to/from airport
Tickets for live ents
On rare times I do drink, I'll have expensive cocktails or champagne
