Inspired by a thread on here which was what can you afford but you don’t spend money on..

showed what value people place on “stuff”

so obviously disregarding basic food, health stuff what do you value enough to splurge your hard earned cash on?

Menopause vitamins
Trips away.

My house. I'm not materialistic so don't buy new cars, expensive shoes, posh clothes, jewellery or make up. I don't like holidays. So I sat down one day and thought about something that would make my life nicer, and came up with my house.

It's still got loads that it needs doing to it (old house) but I'm trying to gradually do bits to improve it. Both DIY and paying tradesmen.

Seeing my favourite band all round the country ......and works!

Fancy restaurants with tasting menus.

Luxury hotel stays and tasting menus. My parents thought eating out was a massive waste of money - 'you can have the same much cheaper at home' - no you can't.

Same! 😋

Gosh, good question,

clothes, I love good quality clothes, me and em, Reiss, farm Rio, studio Nicholson etc. I like to always wear nice clothes.

same for shoes and bags

mounjaro, an expensive monthly maintenance plan, but worth it. I now no longer have to worry about my weight, or the health damage it causes if I gain, and maintain a size 8 with ease. And I get rhe additional health benefits in taking it.

make up, namely Victoria Beckham the drops foundation. Makes me look like I’ve flawless glowy healrhy skin, and her concealer.

the cleaner, she comes weekly for a couple of hours and so we don’t need to do anything past keep on top of it daily.

holidays and nights away, I like a bit of luxury when I travel, good hotels, good food, good drinks..

my hair, good hairdresser, good products.

perfume and body lotion, I wear Byredo bal d’afrique.

Experiences, good restaurants, we are booked into 3 different Michelin stars over the next 6 weeks. And to see a west end show.

my late 20s daughter, love her to bits. And happy to support her even though she’s a high earner, with lovely gifts, normally clothes she’d not buy herself or make up, bags or shoes as a treat.

I think this is just being rich.

Or just different priorities?

Day hotels. You can use all the amenities in that time as well.
Great when you just need a few hours to yourself - but don’t want to be out in public.

Well maybe if you’re washing from a jug and buying your trainers from Sue Ryder.

something tells me —it’s the Hyacinth Bouquet X airline magazine descriptions of aspiration— that’s not the case.

A private limo transfer from airport and back when travelling. Fast track security also and front seat/exit row or extra legroom seat on the plane.

As you can see, it's all about ease and comfort when travelling. I am not bothered about purchasing "luxuries" otherwise!

This is when I’m glad I have very short legs! Always have plenty of room even on Ryanair! I do get a taxi to and from the airport though as I’m always afraid I’ll be delayed getting public transport!

Our house is falling to bits to be fair and I don’t have a stick of bought new furniture/matching towels or plates in it!

Plus you don’t have to cook it, clean up or do the dishes!

Cleaner. Always hated cleaning, so we got one as soon as we moved in together even though at the time it meant less going out and less treats. Now we can afford it so it’s different but when DH and I first got together we definitely made sacrifices so we could have one.

One of the taps you can get boiling water out of. Tbh I always thought they were a posh person gimmick that people only got to show off - then my sister got one and I realised they’re actually great. She did the classic sister thing and said I copied her as well… I mean yes I did on this occasion but what can I say, she’s a trend setter.

Honestly when the kids were babies getting the shopping delivered. Youngest is 2 now, and most weeks I go and do the food shop with my dad while DH has the kids but getting it delivered when you have babies is way easier.

jfc @ApplePieCinamon do you not understand how this makes you sound?

The way youve described it shows that you don’t actually believe that this is something that makes your busy life easier - it’s something that ensures your babies don’t have to be contaminated by the scum that lurk in all those non-exclusive under five environments.

Ugh.

The old heart sinking ‘we can make it better at home ‘ when passing the all elusive Indian Restaurant when out with my parents - the stuff of dreams- so close but so far away sadly ….
Cue forced ecstasy at dad deciding to make his ‘authentic famous curry’ …with a side of chalky unseasoned rice- deep internal deep and disappointment for us kids)

Well that’s what you’ve taken from it, don’t really care.
My kids really enjoy it and I do too, so I’m happy to pay

of course you don’t @ApplePieCinamon . That’s how people like you get on in life, by not giving a fuck about others and having no shame about that fact.

Memberships of social clubs and a gym. I'm currently single and belonging to groups and communities means a lot to me.

Also books, but I buy them second hand for a couple of quid from Abebooks (highly recommended)

In my case - definitely the gym.

I'm retired and getting maximum use out of my membership. Also - getting healthy lunches at the gym cafe, meaning I can attend classes in the morning, afternoon and evening the same day.

HollywoodTease · 09/08/2026 01:09

My motorhome. She's 21 years old and cost me a big chunk of my savings but I just adore getting out and about and exploring new places in her.

Slightly related, live music and small festivals. I'm in the van at a festival near Manchester as I write this, but I travel all over the world to see my favourite bands. We don't have resort-type holidays, all my spare money goes into the travel pot so I can do stuff like the Monsters Of Rock cruise every year.

Mounjaro. I'm still a work in progress with that, but I'm 50lbs down since the start of this year, I've reversed my pre-diabetes, my blood pressure is normal, I don't have IBS and I'm overall a calmer, happier person. It's been life-changing so far.....

JillyComeLately · 09/08/2026 01:10

Lunches out, nice holidays, good quality face creams, and soaps like loccitane or gatineau.
I would never pay someone else to give beauty, body or nail treatments...I would find that a waste of money.

PDAalltheway · 09/08/2026 03:09

Books.
100% cotton bedding.
Merino wool or cashmsre t-shirts / cardigans (though I only buy them second hand).
