Inspired by a thread on here which was what can you afford but you don’t spend money on..

showed what value people place on “stuff”

so obviously disregarding basic food, health stuff what do you value enough to splurge your hard earned cash on?

All my spare £s goes on my animals; dogs, cats, horses and chickens. All rescues. I couldn’t be without them.

Living in a nice, safe area rather than a cheaper one.

Good quality natural fabrics to make clothes and soft furnishings that I actually love.

FoxandDuck · 08/08/2026 21:12

Heating (not recently though!)
Fresh flowers
Being a “member” of various local organisations even though I am unlikely to use their facilities but think they are benefitting the local community
If we go on a city break, staying right in city centre accommodation when we go away. Yes, it costs more but it’s so nice being in the heart of where you are immediately rather than having to faff around with transport

hugasaurus · 08/08/2026 21:14

Nails and lashes! They make me feel ‘put together’ no matter what’s going on.

Exercise gear. Vital for my mental health.

Regular massages

Montezuma dark chocolate and cherry bars

EnglishGirlApproximately · 08/08/2026 21:16

Skincare
Trainers
But mostly good holidays - I'd rather go away less often than compromise on good quality accomodation, great meals out, plenty of experiences and activities and good flight times.

All these are 'worth it' in my opinion!:

Dresses.
Perfume.
Flowers - my Husband used to buy me a bouquet of flowers every Friday - but sadly that stopped so I have to buy my own now.
Moleskine Hardback Notebooks - I even buy my own notebooks for work.
Ink Pens.
I like a certain type of mug to drink from!
Clothes hangers - best not to ask!
Holidays.
Home.
Gifts.
Greetings cards - a specific type again.
Christmas - fills me with joy! 🎄

So yes, I'm a bit particular! I know what I like and don't like!

veganism.

it's fucking expensive to do well for a foodie like me who doesn't like UPFs and has picky teens.

But every time I see the pictures of how animals actually live in industrial dairy factories, I can't believe we allow this.

I just couldn't go back and unsee it all. And yes, I do despise all of you for refusing to look while liking cute dog instagram posts Wink

Same. Being vegan can be very cheap, but part of it for me is buying organic because I’m committed to what I believe are regenerative horticultural practices and I like to support small growers.

Then I discovered the non organic treatments that are involved in post harvesting production of beans. I don’t always buy organic ones now but I try to.

And it’s recently been the English cherry season. I have a fantastic greengrocer: if I get my timing right, they’re in my home the day after they’ve been picked and you can definitely taste the difference but at 14.99 / kg they’re probably more expensive than a good bottle of wine. Fortunately for me, I don’t drink alcohol.

I am more than slightly fanatical about eating good fruit and veg. I’m well aware it’s a luxury.

mishmashmess · 08/08/2026 21:27

Luxury hotel stays and tasting menus. My parents thought eating out was a massive waste of money - 'you can have the same much cheaper at home' - no you can't.

Private transfers on holiday. I just want to get there after all the faff of getting up early and stress of airports etc.

Fishhooksandjellybabies · 08/08/2026 21:33

Holidays.
Cleaner, gardener and dog walker.
My beautiful DGC's

PashaMinaMio · 08/08/2026 21:34

My lovely car.
Pedicures
Decent perfume
Fish straight off the local trawler fleet

Worked hard, always saved, enjoying it now.

Well, continuing the subject of veganism, I very much want to have the Grand Dîner menu at Gauthier Soho. Definitely not something I’d be able to do at home. I just need someone to go with

DressOrSkirt · 08/08/2026 21:38

Craft supplies (mostly wool)

Mounjaro. I was barely overweight with a BMI of 25 and could have lost it (again) myself, but I cannot overstate how mentally freeing it is to love my body again and not constantly think about what I’m eating, should I eat it, “being good”’”treat” rarara, with WLI it’s so freaking easy. I feel like I’ve freed up so much time and space in my mind!

LatteLady · 08/08/2026 21:44

Cashmere sweaters - that's a recent indulgence
Good yarn and fabric for sewing and knitting
Several sewing machines
Fresh coffee... I gave up instant coffee in 1986...
Butter
Decent pens...

ShakyBake · 08/08/2026 21:45

My very expensive antique globe of the world bar. It spins and opens up to revel a well stocked selection of gins, scotch and aged bottles of wines. Yes I am an alcoholic but it brings me too much joy to stop now. My mantra to life is if the world is spinning then why shan't I
