"he didn't actually do anything that could kill him, despite having the means to."
- No, thats right, he didn't, in the short part which was streamed live.
But I don't understand the logic of "the bit we saw doesn't show him trying to kill himself, therefore that can't possibly be what he was ultimately trying to do". We saw him running the knife across his throat, and a lot of the wounds were really bad. Yes, some were "only shallow" (a shallow knife cut is f*ing painful).
He said he wanted to die and wanted the police to shoot him.
Was he supposed to just pick up the knife and immediately kill himself for it to be considered a suicidal mentality/attempt?
I honestly don't know how anyone can see someone in such a devastating, desperate, physically and mentally agonising state (without seemingly even being aware he had very painful wounds) and try to find any sort of rational thinking or explanation in any of it.
"Saying he was killing himself on camera is a rather overwrought exaggeration that there isn't any need for." is a completely baffling comment. He was slicing his skin without screaming in agony - but you think he could rationally decide to "exaggerate" what he was doing/intending on doing? Additionally, do you think him saying that is where it all crossed a line? Your comment makes it seem like you think that him saying he was killing himself is when it all went too far!
I know that you're not diminishing the horrible state he was in mentally, I just can't fathom any comments at all which try to rationalise any of his actions.
