I don't want to let the gas man in. I have already cancelled twice. Every year I get warning letters.. I don't want to let anyone in. I don't want have any form of interaction. I don't want anyone physically in my house. I don't even know when they are coming. I just know its an afternoon appointment.

Have they pulled that stunt before

Unfortunately OP will have to try. I know it isn’t easy for everyone to do, but if she calls first thing and explains she was in all day waiting it stops any further action. At this point it’s probably necessary to call. Or get someone else to do it.

You can, actually - disconnected at street main level and all pipes removed.

Means they can check that there isn't a leak immediately below the cap where there is still a gas supply. Or that morons haven't done something like try to uncap it, bring in calor gas cylinders or suchlike.

No but they have turned up at other times that were not booked . One called and said I'm outside your house. But I wasn't home. And they put it as if I had missed them.

Are you on your own? Text back and ask when they are likely to show up. Ask for a call when they are on their way. We always get a call when they are leaving the previous job. Presumably it is a rented property so you have an obligation to give access, or arrange for someone else to let them in.

I work for a contractor who carries out Gas Safety checks and boiler maintenance repairs. If your property is social housing, it is part of your tenancy agreement and a legal requirement to allow access. Legal proceedings do commence if you do not allow access which usually results in a fine and eviction from the property. If you are struggling due to the timeframe they give, I am sure if you kindly ask them they will honour you a smaller timeframe for the appointment. It takes between 20 and 30 minutes to complete the check and is for your own safety. Do you have a family member that can be present whilst the engineer attends? A Housing Officer? There are lots of options to make you feel more relaxed about it. Its best to be honest with the company who are carrying it out so they they can try to suit your requirements / needs. X

I hate it too. I always feel so awkward and stand around not knowing what to do with myself! Get a little job to do whilst he is in doing these checks, like clearing out your wardrobe or getting kids stuff sorted for a charity shop run, Then when he knocks let him in and say your busy doing X but to shout if he needs anything..he wont
and have a little treat stashed away for yourself for after its done.

@JenniferBooth with regards to gas boiler checks you have to let them in. Its in your tenancy agreement which you sign when you move in

Carbon monoxide detectors, in use since the 1990"s I believe, can tell you that. Advanced meters can shut down a system based on irregular flows, waiting until the gas man visits on the 25th of August or whatever to poke around can"t do that?

I’m a tenant and have a legal duty to keep not only my home but my landlord’s property safe and up to a legal standard. If I refused to do so I’d expect my landlord to have my ass out on the street before I could blink. Why can’t you do a basic adult task?
