I don't want to let the gas man in. I have already cancelled twice. Every year I get warning letters.. I don't want to let anyone in. I don't want have any form of interaction. I don't want anyone physically in my house. I don't even know when they are coming. I just know its an afternoon appointment.

You haven’t said why you don’t want anyone in your house? If we know why it will be easier for us to offer suggestions for support

If it’s a gas safety check in a rented property , the length of the appointment depends on how many gas appliances you have. If you have a gas boiler they will need to check that as well as the gas supply into the house, any gas fires and if you have a gas cooker, then that as well.

Ask if they can let you know when they are on the way or if you can be the first on the list for either a morning or afternoon. You can’t get out of this one so start thinking about the ways you can make it more achievable for you.

Phone them up and tell them you've got mental health problems and the unknown appointment time makes you very anxious to the extent that you work yourself up and can't let them in. Tell them you'd like to work with them to figure a solution and can they please give you a more exact time.

If you don't they'll get a court order and they'll use whatever means they need to access your home.

Can you think of a friend or relative who can sit with you when they come?

Once it's done you can breath a sigh of relief, you won't need to get anxious opening the post etc, it'll be done.

just get it over and done with and youl feel much better about it. I dont like people in my home either, but these things are important.

op what are you worried about? That he might hurt you? Or is your house a mess?

If you cannot deal with something as simple as having a certified gas contractor checking the safety of your gas appliances, how on earth do you manage the rest of your life? Have you always been so anxious - have you had therapy to get to the bottom of this? If you haven’t, you really need to do this.

I just have gas hob. Do they need to go upstairs?

I recognise OP from previous where she mentioned refusal of these checks. And going to GP.
Op, you are risking your tenancy. Landlord has to do these checks. They can be pulled up on it so it eil simply never change and every year you will go through it. You had to gor years now. You need to find coping technique before the landlord finds a way to evict because this is an issue

If a gas safety check is done in 10 mins max there's absolutely no way it has been done properly

is it just trades men? Or do you not have any visitors at all?

Is it specifically the gas man's visit that is worrying you or would you be the same with letting another stranger in?

What about people that you know - would you be the same if a friend said they would pop over in the afternoon without giving a particular time?

They are going to come into your home. Would you prefer that happens the easy way or the hard way?

Do you not have any human interaction in your life at all?

Is it the thought of being in the house with him, or him being in the house full stop? (eg could you step out into the garden if you have one and tell him to give you a shout once he's done?)

Are you the poster with the lino? Can your 16 year old be in as well so there are two of you?

It depends what there is inside the property to be checked. One gas meter and one gas hob isn't going to take very long at all.

I would sound like a total prat.
I don't have anyone and that would be 2 people in the house. Logically I know i have to let gas man in.

Yes it’s 30 minutes, I always get his number from the landlord/estate agent and ask him to message or phone me when he’s on this way as I can’t wait around either (I WFH).

I would say it does come under mental health and wellbeing, because it is not natural to be so fearful of letting anyone at all inside your home. Even if you have experienced some sort of severe trauma in the past which has caused it, I would urge you to speak to your GP about how you feel.

It would depend if there is any gas supply to the upper floor.

in my area however our gas engineers also take the opportunity to test the smoke alarms so if there’s one on a landing they may ask to do that.

Do you have a housing officer? They might be able to talk you through exactly what to expect.

As a gas engineer with 35 years experience I can tell you even this should take a lot longer than 10 minutes
