I don't want to let the gas man in. I have already cancelled twice. Every year I get warning letters.. I don't want to let anyone in. I don't want have any form of interaction. I don't want anyone physically in my house. I don't even know when they are coming. I just know its an afternoon appointment.

Can you explain to me what's going on? Why can't someone just say "yes, there's a safety risk, I accept that risk." I've never had someone want to do a gas check, I don't really understand.

It isn't a risk only to the householder.

Barbarella73 · 04/08/2026 20:07

They must have been and gone at this stage - are you okay OP?

Gooseling · 04/08/2026 20:08

The more I read the more I think this is totally unfair on your landlord. It isn’t your property. The property belongs to the landlord and he/she is required legally to have this annual gas check.

Please seek urgent help from your GP.

Is this because it’s a man or would you feel the same with any stranger?

I just wish there were more females in trades.

It doesn't make a difference.

What did your appointment letter say, or text time wise.

DontTeaseMyDog · 04/08/2026 20:18

Private or ha ? They normally send a text (housing) when they are on their way to you, but they wouldn't work past this time

A gas safety check is nothing to do with the Smart Meter it's to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and explosions.

Smart meters can detect gas leaks.

It was in a text message. P

Don't be silly. Of course they can't. Mine is outside in a meter cupboard, how could it detect a leak from my boiler in the kitchen even if that technology existed?

I have never had a text message saying they are on route. Just a text at the time of appointment being made. Afternoon are 1pm -8pm

Yes, because all the males do that, and like jeopardising their jobs and livelihoods...

Well they pretty much get away with it when they do

If it's social housing councils usually are very accommodating. My son has similar issues to you and they have been very good because I have to be there if anyone is coming. The only time I couldn't be there was for a gas check and we arranged a 2 hour time slot instead of 5 and that he would leave the door unlocked and stay in his bedroom. The check took literally 5 minutes and the chap just shouted that he was done and that was it.
I hope you can get help it's no way to live.

I hope i don't get a warning for them not coming. When I do it thats my own fault . But i don't want to get warnings for something I didn't do.

If you call the company carrying out the gas checks it would save you a massive amount of angst wondering about the appointment. It’s quite possible it won’t be today now as it’s too late. Call them first thing in the morning and tell them you were in all day waiting, and could they please give you a firm appointment time because it exacerbates your anxiety not knowing when they are coming.

That is all you have to do and say. They are not monsters and will understand. I do get how difficult it is; genuinely. But there are small and simple ways of making it easier on yourself.

It monitors your gas usage from minute to minute, unusual spikes in flow can trigger a system shutdown in advanced systems.

Unfortunately that does happen If you do experience it just keep calm phone them and ask for it to be taken off the record
Which HA is it?

k1233 · 04/08/2026 20:35

Not sure if gas person has been or not, but if not or in preparation for next time this os what I would suggest. Most places (in Australia anyway) have online chat. If the gas company has that, get online and outline what you have said here. You have a social anxiety condition and not knowing the time of the appointment is causing you significant distress. This is why you continue to refuse appointments. Could they please provide you with an actual appointment time that will be met eg first appointment of the day, so that this process causes you the least amount of distress as possible.

You can do it, OP. A few deep breaths and keep it simple. I suffer with anxiety and have to do exactly this every time I have a safety check because I hate people in my space and the waiting about makes me stressed. I don’t tell them all of that; just the bit about it making me anxious if I don’t know when they’re coming. They’re always very nice about it.

Whyohwhy99 · 04/08/2026 19:22

How is safeguarding linked to the situation?

But they won't get. If it was the case then why are the letters warning letters. But nothing adding to it such as if your finding it difficult or need support please let us know. Whys it not made clear that theres help if there is.

I dont know yr association so i dont know. I am just trying to give you a few ideas and hope you call yr company. The letters are warning letters as when you signed the tenancy , it will state these visits are legally necessary for your safety . As you have said, you will ignore them until they are at last chance.
You can query things on here so please get in contact with your association
I dont wish to argue with you, so i will leave the thread .

I could screen shot dds 360 that will say how long I have been in the house. But that doesn't stop them saying I didn't let them in.

This is part of the problem OP has, she can’t make the call. It seems simple to us but she has said that she can’t verbalise it on
a telephone call. She does not have our experiences of calling and explaining and does not feel able to do it.

@Whyohwhy99, to put it gently, an advocate would be able to speak for you. DS?

GP appointment soon, good!
