I don't want to let the gas man in. I have already cancelled twice. Every year I get warning letters.. I don't want to let anyone in. I don't want have any form of interaction. I don't want anyone physically in my house. I don't even know when they are coming. I just know its an afternoon appointment.

Yes we refer to social services and safe guarding who will assist with a lot of things.
I am saying as my job, I would ring your GP with you , i would happily do an emergency safe guarding and ensure you had someone with you that day to get you medical help.
Practically , every missed appointment costs money. Every letter costs money. If people are aware then it is easier , in your instance, to work with you to ensure the appointments are kept . If having someone there at 9am meant you would keep the first visit, i myself would ring the contractor ( as a housing officer) and explain and ensure the time was a time and not a slot.
It makes no difference if you have masked for years. They have the proof of the missed visits for a start. You know the visits legally have to happen, so its easier to work with a person than to have no response.
Everyone has to start somewhere, it makes no difference if you have lived there 30years and not said anything. They have a duty of care to you as a tenant/resident but mostly as a person.
Please , if you can , email or ring , whatever is easier for you. I dont know who you are with, I just know what I/we do.

How is safeguarding linked to the situation?

But they won't get. If it was the case then why are the letters warning letters. But nothing adding to it such as if your finding it difficult or need support please let us know. Whys it not made clear that theres help if there is.

The more you cancel and longer you put it off, the worse your anxiety will get.

This is their job, they do this multiple times a day everyday and they won’t even remember you.

You are just a number on a list to them and they wouldn’t even recognise you have anxiety over it.

Tidy up.
Let them in and tell them to shout if they need anything.
Go into the front room and start a thread on here and we’ll talk to you whilst they’re there.
They’ll be gone before you know it.

It sounds weird but start having the front door open more and the front of the house windows and curtains.

Sit on the front doorstep with a book if it’s nice.

Your home is your safe little bubble and you need to break that threshold barrier.

Gooseling · 04/08/2026 19:26

Are you adult children aware of the extent of your extreme anxiety?

If so, can you get them to come round on the day of the appointment, they can do the talking to the gas man whilst you hide somewhere?

OP Please just let them in. He’ll be in and out in five minutes. You’ll be fine. What are you afraid of? Have you tried CBT? You can’t live like this, it’ll only get worse from here. Face what you’re afraid of, it’s never as bad as you think. And know that you’re not alone - others have experienced this too. But you mustn’t hide yourself away - you deserve to live 💖

I don't know which one is right now

More like 10 minutes OP, if that 🙂

Phone them up and tell them you've got mental health problems and the unknown appointment time makes you very anxious to the extent that you work yourself up and can't let them in. Tell them you'd like to work with them to figure a solution and can they please give you a more exact time.

If you don't they'll get a court order and they'll use whatever means they need to access your home.

Can you think of a friend or relative who can sit with you when they come?

Once it's done you can breath a sigh of relief, you won't need to get anxious opening the post etc, it'll be done.

Good luck

Excellent advice!

inkgirl · 04/08/2026 19:32

Unfortunately you kind of have to or they will keep pestering you to do the gas health and safety check. Its for your own safety

Anextrasetofhands11 · 04/08/2026 16:16

I think you are being very unfair, calling out OP on other posts she may or mat not have made.
Who suddenly made you a doctor?

I find their post perfectly reasonable and appropriate. It’s not necessary to be a doctor to see that the OP is clearly distressed. Your post on the other hand was unnecessarily obtuse and may even prevent the OP from getting help.

What is a gas safety check? I don't think we've ever had one in any house we've ever lived it. Before a smart meter we used to have meter readings ,that was all.

Normally your boiler should be serviced once a year for safety reasons and they check the gas cooker and meter,

If property is privately owned its not a legal requirement as such, just safety knowing your boiler is working efficiently

Jesus F#ck, pull yourself together, ffs. The guy isn't remotely interested or bothered about you; he'll want to do his job. Do you want to die by poisoning or gas explosion?

Whyohwhy99 · 04/08/2026 19:44

PinkyFlamingo · 04/08/2026 19:01

You know this is no way to live, and it looks like it's a life long problem. The issue with anxiety is avoidance makes it worse
You say you have no friends. But it's not always been like this as you mention a DS and you may have other children to? But you've not said .So you've had relationships in the past and brought children up ....what changed?
You need help. Real help. Please reach out to your GP as a first point of contact.

Nothing has changed. Or it has over time. I don't know.

Get a smart meter, God knows Scottish Power have been banging on about this for long enough, pretending that your whole house will stop working if you don"t get one.

A gas safety check is nothing to do with the Smart Meter it's to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and explosions.

How old are your kids? Hopefully they are young adults..ask one of them to be there when the gas man comes round. Also sign yourself up for your Gas Priority Register online and explain your situation they give extra help. Good luck with the GP appointment

I’ve not read the full thread but wanted to pick up on this point.

I work for a HA in house repairs contractor and manage the appointment allocation. As much as we generally work to appt slots as you describe if we are made aware of access issues and we need to attend at specific time to to accommodate customers needs for whatever reason that may be, we work with the housing officer and the customer to ensure this happens. This is cheaper and more efficient than keep having no access visits. The annual check is a legal requirement and ensures the safety of appliances so is really important.

It’s obviously too late for this year if you’re already getting the warning letters but I would really encourage you to engage with your landlord to explain the situation and discuss with your housing officer. A good officer would even offer to attend at the same time to reassure you.

I'm the same op
I HATE people in my home
I'm autistic
I can't have a door step call "just checking the meter"
It throws me
I need notice

impostacosta · 04/08/2026 19:51

Also, a genuine LGSR appt will take approx 45mins. Just wanted to be realistic as everyone saying they’ll be in and out in 5/10mins is not accurate

DontTeaseMyDog · 04/08/2026 19:53

Hmmm. You do know you're going to be ok the minute it's all over yeah?

Infact, you'll feel fine the moment they are doing it, they do not care about your house - they've seen it all.
They do not want to talk to you - they don't care if your busy working, they don't care if your sitting down eating a nandos at 13.05 when they show up.

It's literally a job to them and to you, it's your safety.

They will need to access to your boiler, gas meter, kitchen since you have a gas hob, and your smoke alarms.

Occasionally they put their head into the loft if it's needed.

It won't take long, 10 minutes is a stupid ideal though. I'd say more 30 minutes.

Breathe, open the door, hey how are you, boilers in there and kitchens that way.

Put some music or tele on, play on your phone, be available but you don't have to stand there and chat or anything.

30 minutes of your entire year. You so got this

JenniferBooth · 04/08/2026 19:54

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/08/2026 15:51

Tough. You've got to do it.

Never mind getting evicted or them forcing entry, your children could die.

Well we are capped and we still have to have it done Doesnt bother me except when they lie that i havent let them in and you cant get safer than capped.

What if it was a woman gas fitter? Would that make things easier?

My HA has a good one and she doesnt throw her weight around like the blokes do

JenniferBooth · 04/08/2026 20:02

Iloveeverycat · 04/08/2026 16:53

It doesn't if you are a home owner.

Apparently there is a special kind of gas piped into private homes that cant explode

JenniferBooth · 04/08/2026 19:57

Yes, because all the males do that, and like jeopardising their jobs and livelihoods...

Baskingintheheat · 04/08/2026 20:02

Whyohwhy99 · 04/08/2026 18:03

I don't want to interact though. They know where the kitchen is. If I show them stuff thats more talking.

You don't need to interact. They will know where everything is.

OP please work with your HA. You aren't the only one who experiences anxiety over this. They will want to support you to do the gas check. They won't want this to go to legal as much as you don't.

JenniferBooth · 04/08/2026 20:04

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/08/2026 17:05

Because that's how entire families are found dead or children of next door neighbours die in gas explosions.

A danger that apparently disappears if the tenant next door excersises RTB
