I haven't been on this thread for ages. Firstly there there was the state of British politics and secondly I couldn't pay the cat tax anymore (and yes I know it doesn't matter and you'd accept a pot plant but it was depressing).
But now I feel hopeful about politics again. A bitter comedian might lose a by-election to a better comedian, AB is taking the time to fix little things that bother people and he's really good at communicating.
Also, I've started fostering cats and pickup our next one this afternoon. Expect a photo.

I'm at the point where believing in fairies is a rational folklore choice compared to the silly season utterances being produced by the newspapers. And the Green party on Twitter. I just wished my parents would ignore the daily mail, or at least read around more widely.
I don't think Burnham is the messiah and he will absolutely fuck something up. It's inevitable, no matter what party is in power I am just hopeful he will also unfuck a few things at the same time and I'm resigned to paying more tax whatever happens. Our demographics demand it

Would he have liked Burnham? He’s selling himself as old Labour currently, but he’s very much anew Labour and a Blairite f you look at his history. Not sure my dad (mining family background, trade unionist but trained as a teacher after WW2) would have been a big fan…

Does one see people before colour ? The answer in the negative is how you can move towards treating other human beings differently based on accidents of pigmentation, or other genetic irrelevances.

Personally I was bought up in a fold that said people are people, and any attempt to continue classifying them is a bourgeois trick to set the workers against each other so the elite can rule them.

Old school socialists might remember that.

I confidently predict that the hot, dry weather will last until qpth September when it will break with rain of by biblical proportions. I'm going on a 4 day walking trip on 10th and when I get back I have 2 outdoors in the middle of the countryside with no shelter volunteering sessions.

DH and I went before the schools broke up purely for the air con (well I did anyway, DH was keen to see it) We had the cinema to ourselves. Secretly, I quite enjoyed it.

I went to see The Odyssey for the 3 hours aircon two weeks ago. THERE WAS NO AIRCON! Wail!

My DF, who sounds very similar, old school Labour councillor and Trade union steward (but steelworker rather than miner) knew Andy Burnham from his earlier days when he worked with the Union and he was a big fan. He’d be delighted I think.

@Piggywaspushed it was bloody freezing when we went. I had a Cardi and a scarf and I had to nip out for a coffee to warm up.

I was describing my dad’s background. Individuals have them. I didn’t refer to anything genetic. I wasn’t saying it was better or worse than any other background, so still not sure what your point is 🤷‍♀️

That’s good to know. So…when was Burnham acting against his principles? When he expressed Blairite views to get ahead or now? Neither gives me much confidence to be honest. I remain unconvinced.

Some of my ex-colleagues have turned out to be Farage supporters but I've not come across any support for Lowe. We're all retired now but back in our working days we never discussed politics and it's only really in recent years through Facebook that I've learned some horrible truths about some people.

I've done a lot of un-friending as I can't tolerate their attitude. Well, except one guy who unfriended me first because I kept telling him that St George wasn't English.

Yes, it's hard when you suddenly realise someone you really like(d) can hold such unpalatable views.

I have muted two people on Facebook, one a former nurse who has become totally obsessed with grooming gangs (but only those with a certain skin colour) and another who is an extremely intelligent woman with multiple degrees who is obsessed with small boats. The second one was actually married to an Iraqi man and had a child with him and converted to Islam. There’s no explanation for it really.

I binned an American friend off when she proudly told me she’d voted for Trump back in 2016.

@BIossomtoes that is another odd thing they do seem to be proud of themselves, it’s not a question of being left or right supporting, it’s more exhibiting a total lack of intelligence and critical thinking. You would think they would be embarrassed to admit voting for the likes Trump, Farage or Lowe or supporting their policies.
