The Conservatives had already implemented the early release scheme. it was begun in October 2023.

This was despite warnings -

The National Audit Office raised the alarm in a report published in February 2020 – while Rishi Sunak was chancellor – saying that without intervention demand for prison places was on course to exceed supply sometime between October 2022 and June 2023.

The report pointed the finger at the Treasury for failing to provide enough funding to expand the prison estate, and said a need for more places was being driven by the government's own policy of imposing longer prison sentences.

Sunak released 10,000 prisoners between October 2023 - July 2024.

Despite this at the point of the election there were 100 prison places available.

The thing that’s impressing me with Burnham so far is his ability to explain the problem and how it occurred, how he plans to deal with it and being empathetic to how people may not like that, his future aims - and all without direct finger pointing at the other side and blaming them. Yes - he’s attributing blame where it’s the truth but it’s not his main points.

It’s refreshing.

I have some sympathy for Sunak - he had to implement early release because the previous decade of Conservatives had refused to grasp the nettle of prison places.
But for any Conservative now to claim that the system is fucked and not take some responsibility for that is a duplicitous arsehole.

As the article I linked to states the Conservatives messed around with the funding models for new prisons FOUR TIMES - is there any surprise nothing was achieved?

"The National Audit Office are on a long list of individuals giving warnings to this Government. It is a crisis of their own making yet no one takes responsibility," Steve Gillan, general secretary of the Prison Officers' Association (POA) told The Independent.
"The POA have been warning about policy decisions for many years. Sadly they have fallen on deaf ears. Between 2010 and the present day, prison closures have lost 10,000 places, with only 11,000 coming on stream with the new building program which is delayed and not on target."

Indeed. Not only that plus a summer of riots, all engineered by the far right on social media, which meant more imprisoned.

Recall that Musk had a hand in it, with Reform also flirting on the tailcoats.

I agree, it’s completely shocking how hypocritical the Tories are being about this issue. Badenoch was part of that government.

I like the way Burnham is tackling this, particularly the way he’s explaining it. It’s very promising.

A review into indefinite sentences for male prisoners is good as is releasing women for non violent sentences.

Not sure how freeing up places in the women's estate to house male offenders will work, though I'm sure this is a long term project, and rightly so.

He's saying the right things in the right way IMO. How it's organised or paid for time will tell. But it's very encouraging that (on this subject) he seems to understand that people want at least a nod to a "can do" approach.

Makes me ponder on why Starmer couldn't see this.

He had agency here , so fuck all sympathy from me. I'll reserve that for the poor people killed, injured, raped or assaulted whilst he was watching the world from inside his gilded cage.

You do have to wonder how the country has fallen so far when you have a man of what appears to be Asian descent (going off the photos) sending a woman of Asian descent racist emails, when such ideology is spread and encouraged by said woman. What a mind fuck!

No, but this was a comment on that specific case.

We had a discussion about this at SUTR - some 2nd + generation folk will say they integrated but some newer immigrants aren’t - like they’re on a graded scale of good to poor immigrant- and they’re scared too that these ‘non integrated’ people will impact their lives badly - the media and politicians are driving this narrative and division too.

there’s one area of my city where there’s been continued issues around this over the decades. It’s about reminding that the stick the newer immigrants get is the same that earlier ones had - driven mostly by msm and politicians for the politics of division - so we need to remind that you don’t join in but work together.

We had discussions too about including more historical education in our anti racist stuff - it’s so sad and awful that people are being made to feel like they shouldn’t be here and should never have been here - and this is happening more and more. Abhorrent.
