I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Beijing Zoo. Concrete everywhere and people banging on the enclosures to get animals to look at them. I cried at a miserable wolf kept in a box and left.

Cornwall. Really far away, everyone hated us, they drove like maniacs on tiny narrow roads, and the cider I had gave me a stomach ache.
Dh says Erbil airport (!), oklahoma, and north texas

Launceston is horrible. Creepy vibe to it. Couldn’t wait to leave.

What was actually there?

Not a lot, we stayed overnight as crew. Sadly a really impoverished city, it was an eye opener

Malta - i was so bored! Also went to the algarve Portrugal and didn’t enjoy it at all, it was expensive, couldn’t find anything other than english food and bars which is the opposite of what i want on holiday. Id love to return to portrugal but not there.

Where did you go in the algarve, we've been going for 20 years and love it

Bodrum, Turkey. Just constant harassment and not an enjoyable experience. Just felt very stressful. Has put me off visiting Turkey again, though I am sure other places in the country are lovely!

Edited

Yeah this for me too.

Croydon. I grew up there so I know.

Also Florida. Went once, no need to return. I hate anywhere that you can't navigate without a car.

And Detroit. Like Croydon after The Bomb. Though tbf this was in the late 80s, I hear its improved. Met a sweet old lady who told me I had a lovely voice - "just like Margaret Thatcher".

We once, 1989, got a parking ticket in, I think, Tybee Island, South Carolina and I sent OH to the office with a $100 travellers cheque to pay it. He came back with a big grin, the $100 TC in his hand. He said he had apologised for not having enough change, apologised for over staying but he thought we still had a few minutes and said how lovely the town was. The woman swooned a bit, told him he looked just like Eroll Flynn and talked beautifully, she then tore up the ticket, told him that the machines were very unreliable and said enjoy the rest of your visit! He could be very good in those situations.

Chessington world of adventures. Worst day of 2026 so far. I don’t understand how 60-75 min queues for a 1minute ride is deemed a fun day out by so many. Especially when it is for young children. It was a 60 min wait to have one slide down the Paw Patrol heater skelter. Two rides broke down whilst we were in the queue waisting 1 hr 20 mins of our day. Children were in tears. And then there is the surprise car park fee at the end.

That's why you go in term time! I went once in summer hols a decade ago and vowed never again. Not going to make any difference to kid's results to do it for one day every other year. Having fun is just as important as an education.

Blueuggboots · 01/08/2026 20:15

Hartlepool is pretty bleak.
I hated Naples. Felt very unsafe and I’ve travelled quite a bit.
Gibraltar was very underwhelming.

LunchBoxPolice · 01/08/2026 20:16

Skegness. In laws live there and I hate visiting.

Nidri, the most un-Greek place we have ever been. Could not even buy a gyros there! Shops full of absolute tat. No boat trips even you wanted to sit rammed like a sardine in a pulsating party boat. Pedestrianised front literally like a race track on an evening eith scooters running people off the road, you had to constantly be on high alert. Did not meet a single Greek person the whole week.

Hull-my ex lives there and within an hour of stepping off the train,we'd seen 3 drug deals (in broad daylight) and 2 shoplifters being arrested

Peterbrough-the place reeked of farts and I've never seen so many tattoos in one place

Blackpool-grotty,saw an old bloke getting a bj (on the seafront) at about 6pm by a really young woman (she looked like a sex worker)
The weekend just went from bad to worse

I'm from York and it was awful at weekends
Either a load of hen parties or playing 'dodge the dried puke' the following day

"Peterbrough-the place reeked of farts"

Was this a little while ago?

British Sugar used to have a factory there where they processed sugar beets into sugar and, during the harvest, you could smell the factory all over the city depending on which way the wind was blowing.

The factory has since shut down.

After visiting Disney in Tokyo and Florida I simply can't enjoy the UK parks anymore. There is a lack of organisation and theming, a total disregard for visitor experience, and the entrance price does not justify it either. It's actually shocking how bad our parks are compared to the rest of the world. I'm not sure if it's because the weather is so bad here that it's not worth investing in, so they've just given up, maybe.

... I revisited Legoland as an adult (we often went as children) and it was in such a poor state... the models were falling apart and some looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years, thick with muck ... seriously how little effort does it take to grab a hose and wash down a Lego model!? The cleanest and most modern thing was the shop at the exit, lol.

I have high hopes for the United Kingdom Universal they are building, as a lot of that will be indoors and Universal are good at theming. It will be a historic screw-up if they manage to make that a failure too.

Oh yes. Universal should be good. I recently heard that Denmark Lego land is way way better than the UK one.

Florida. I caught Covid on the flight out. It was unbelievably hot and humid. The whole place felt fake. I truly hated it.

Where did you go?

I've still got that book, and crap jobs too, they're great!

I have the crap jobs book too! Love it.

Waterloo in the 1980s, the experience of walking through cardboard city as a child has stayed with me.

Ellsmere port, we were staying on the canalside at the national waterways museum, it was lovely, nice Holiday Inn with a pool, however--- out of the hotel and turn the corner it made the wild west seem tame, it was feral 😁

ChaToilLeam · 31/07/2026 22:13

Hull. I am sure there are nice bits but we weren't in them.

The old town is lovely

the80sweregreat · 01/08/2026 20:22

Sadly, I bet that the new Universal park ( if it ever gets built ) will end up like all the other parks in the UK , with lack of investment and nowhere as good as the American ones are. I hope I’m wrong for those who like theme parks though. Ds2 can’t wait to go to it!

corblimeymlud · 01/08/2026 20:24

Puno on Lake Titicaca but it was many years ago. A freezing shithole with no decent food. I believe it's more developed now.

Catterbat · 01/08/2026 20:24

All of the midlands. Just cut it out, send it out to sea and glue the north to the south. It’s pointless.

Mistymagic77 · 01/08/2026 20:25

Abroad - Dubai and Phuket (loved rest of Thailand - well the places I’ve been to).

UK - most city centres have some dodgy parts

How strange. I've been to Amsterdam several times and always really enjoyed myself. Easy to get around, lots to do, fantastic restaurants and some really pretty areas.

I can't get away with Amsterdam, sick and tired of dodging bicycles

Loveinbloom · 01/08/2026 20:25

Nashville, so disappointing full of tacky shops. The bars were o.k. but nothing wow.

Organi5edbrood · 01/08/2026 20:25

Niagra falls was no better than blackpool.
