I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

India. Never felt so unsafe in my life and so grateful to be on a plane headed back to the uk.

Morocco was also extremely hard work and also felt unsafe/got pestered lots but a bit less dangerous.

I loathed Morocco too. Had romantic ideas about it but as you say was constantly pestered and harassed. This was 30 years ago as well, when I was a teen. Never want to go back.

antipodeansun · 01/08/2026 18:24

Denarau near Nadi, Fiji and all the Resorts there - dull, overcommercialised, just the worst kind of tourism.
Many cities in the U.S. but not LA which has some really lovely parts
Dortmund in Germany or rather its city centre. Such unfortunate postwar rebuild.

It’s a spectrum … I had to go to Blackpool once for a work thing. Driving to the hotel was shocking. I’d never seen such a depressed looking place. I literally got a can back to the train when I was finished and didn’t explore at all. Vilu Reef in the Maldives. Essentially a giant ant hill in the ocean overlooking an incredibly ugly service island. The island, like most of the Maldives was suffering from coastline erosion so there were sand pumps all over the beaches to stop the entire resort disappearing … not what the brochure showed at all 😂

Ilfracombe. There are some lovely spots in North Devon and then you have Ilfracombe amongst it.

Known locally as Ilfrascum!

Well not her grandfather as his Thai wife was only a few years younger than him but she said she'd go out with her partner and see old fat decrepit dirty old men, usually westerners, with young Thai kids in restaurants and bars. Obviously not their kids. She had a go at a couple of them but they were brazen. She said it made her feel physically sick. She couldn't wait to move on elsewhere. This was 2009 so maybe Thai authorities have cracked down on it. Her grandfather said lots of people had guns for protection.

Omg 😨 I can’t bare this

I've been to Liverpool and it was alright for a weekend break. Admittedly never stepped foot outside the city centre but boy did the city dine out off The Beatles big time. Looking at Hull on Google earth 😁 it looks fairly similar to Liverpool.

Totally agree, it's got one theme and I don't think people were so friendly.

Venice. It was extremely hot, expensive, busy and overrated. I felt so sick there.

I went in winter, early January. It was fantastic!

All the bars and restaurants were pleased to see you, the galleries and museums were pretty empty, St Marks was amazing, and we went out to Burano and Murano where the local people were incredibly friendly and welcoming. We also spent a day in Padua, which was a lovely city and worth visiting just for the Scrovegni Chapel alone.

GoldenGail · 01/08/2026 18:27

London. Hell hole. Can’t understand the attraction despite visiting many times

Carpedimum · 01/08/2026 18:27

Bootle in the 1990s was the most shockingly deprived place I have ever seen. For someone from an affluent (sheltered and naive) background I was floored that people lived like that in the U.K.

Bojosgirl · 01/08/2026 18:28

Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria. It was dirty and full of cats. Tourists bought cat food for them and there were loads of smelly tins all over. Plus you got pestered to death by people trying to get you into restaurants. Going out at night was like a military operation trying to avoid as many places as possible. It also had the dirtiest McDonald’s I’ve ever seen. I only went in to use the toilets but they were grim.

My best friend went recently and adored it. Not marracesh though.

Los Angeles is a dump. Homeless people on tourist area
Venice Beach is horrible

JJMama · 01/08/2026 18:31

Just a few, there’s more if I think about it:

Blackpool
slough
LA
Ilfracombe

Great Yarmouth- surely the armpit of England

No the would be Harlow. I lived there for a bit and it and the people were awful.

The only trip I ever cut short was Malaga. Didn’t like the vibe, hotel was next to a very grotty pub (my mistake) it pissed with rain all the time (can’t control the weather) on the whole I hated it. I know people that adore it.

does anyone have anything good to say about Stoke? I was considering moving there 😅😅 what about the surrounding areas like Newcastle under Lyme or Biddulph?

When you say you cut short your trip to Malaga, do you mean you decided to
get a train up to somewhere like Granada or Cordoba and stay there, or a bus along the coast, or you actually came home?

OpenScroller · 01/08/2026 18:34

I hated NYC too. The mentally ill, drug addicts and poverty on the streets, and especially on the subway, was horrifying. The whole place was underwhelming and massively expensive. Agree with the rudeness too.

Ksamil, Albania, it was filthy and stank, although we did go in high summer. Really dangerous pavements and it was so crowded it felt like being in a queue at a theme park walking around. Also saw poo in shallows on the beach.

Ulcinj, Montenegro, pretty much the same including the poo.

Dubrovnik and Venice were also underwhelming, massively expensive and smelt.

We love Turkey and Florida though.

Came to Liverpool for Uni 1986. Never left, live just outside now.
Yes the centre can be a bit Beatles now but the very centre is a bit touristy.
But if that’s all you’ve seen you missed SO much. Galleries, museums, Sefton Park, Baltic Triangle, Cathedrals, theatres, Knowsley Hall it’s beautiful. Vintage creatives scene, lots of band and live music venues. Brilliant comedy club which I go to when I can.
And don’t knock the football. I ended up supporting Everton, which looking back, set me up for misery. But Anfield stadium is fabulous as is the new Everton one.
Anyone I invite absolutely loves it when I take them around (not quite as able as I used to be!) and the people are so friendly. I have had guests from US, Europe, and Australia and they all enjoyed it. As in, returned, which you wouldn’t bother if you were just being nice to your hosts.
Friends’ kids who have come here for Uni have had many stay on to.
If you think it equates to Hull in any way you’ve missed out on a treat.

WhitePudding · 01/08/2026 18:35

Venice is hauntingly beautiful if you choose the right moment, and a utter tourist trap if it's high summer and a cruise ship has just disgorged its passener body.

Naples - run down and menacing - NEVER again!

Naples was one of the scariest places I've ever been too.

OpenScroller · 01/08/2026 18:38

Serbia was pretty depressing as well, although we only passed through.

I was pleasantly surprised by Newcastle city centre and the beaches on the coast.

Leamington spa town, the only one I’ve seen security tags on the actual baskets in the Sainsbury’s. Loads of homeless people causing problems in McDonald’s ( the poor manageress looked exhausted) and a general air of once being lovely and now not so much. The premier inn , I could write paragraphs about how bad that was
! I don’t have much luck with hotels. Lol

I visited Leamington last summer for the first time and it was no where near as down at heal as the majority of UK towns are now.

Shatenoeuf · 01/08/2026 18:41

A south african safari lodge thing. It was run by a white couple and the way they spoke to the (black) staff was incredibly rude, it made us so uncomfortable. We went out of our way to treat all the staff them with the utmost respect & courtesy but the open racism was just nasty.
