I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Amsterdam
Genoa
Rome
Basil
Vienna

But the worst was Marseille! It was dirty and there were so many rats. The customer service everywhere was also terrible.

Luckily I've been to lots of lovely places too!

Can't understand why Vienna's here.

Wisbech.A very bleak place

I prefer the Cyclades for what you are looking for. So I can recommend: AntiParos, Tinos, Folegandros, Sifnos, Serifos, Syros. Naxos too.

In August, most are busy with holidaying Athenians. But what you are asking for they would deliver. For some you will need a car.

Thanks !

You say 20 yrs ago. I was in Magaluf 26 yrs ago and had a lovely week with my DH and our 2 small children. Not high season, though, last week in May. Also, we were right out at one end in a 4 star hotel with lots of families.

Ah! Nice to know that because I had a feeling it ONLY catered to cheap British piss up holidays then. We rented a car and escaped to other parts of Mallorca and nearby towns instead

Fast moving, but great thread. I might have missed a load, but my vote goes to Brighton. Mucky and smelly and the locals were aloof and rude.

RJ2023 · 01/08/2026 19:04

Hollywoods Nightclub in Ipswich in circa 1997/98.

Myli1 · 01/08/2026 19:05

Dubai. Absolutely soulless and devoid of any character. I found the seemingly endless gleaming shopping malls totally mind-numbing.

I’m actually looking forward to going to Marrakesh later this year. I speak a bit of Arabic and my friend is more fluent, we both lived in Bahrain.
We’ll be going overnight in the Atlas mountains

I agree about I of W Nothing wrong with it, but why all the fuss???

Exactly my thoughts, it’s just very ‘meh’.

Leedsfan247 · 01/08/2026 19:11

Florida is a huge state a shame you formed this opinion based on one place / visit

Wolverhampton. There was a queue outside cash converters of about 50 people and they sold toilet rolls individually in the corner shop. The whole place was just shit. I did have a nice curry though Ina famous curry restaurant.

Up until the 1980's ,people would visit from all over the uk as it was such an amazing place to shop and sight see. The centre is dire now but we still have beautiful architecture, art gallery and theatres, not to mention live music venues and incredible old pubs. The West park is beautiful, but the city isn't a nice place to stay, quite dangerous in fact and very few shops remain open. The suburbs are lovely though.

Yes! I couldn't remember the name of the town, but that was it. Went in a pub and it felt like being in a horror film!

Edited to say I spent several years in Hull.

So much of this is different if you enjoy walking, so on the South West coast path:
Ilfracombe - Lee, Hope Cove - Bolt Tail is above you, Paignton - get the bus to Brixham and go up on Berry Head, Penzance - try Marazion or the Minack Theatre.
And museums/galleries:
Liverpool - love the Walker, the Maritime Museum

Chocolateistheanswer2026 · 01/08/2026 19:15

Morocco when I was 15. The way men came up to my dad and asked to sleep with me for money was truly sickening. Even the hotel manager asked me up to his room. So gross.

Niagara Falls town (Canadian side). The falls themselves are obviously beautiful but the town is ghastly. It’s all strip malls, awful themed restaurants, souvenir shops flogging cheap tat, and fast food places.

The American side is no better!

Chessington world of adventures. Worst day of 2026 so far. I don’t understand how 60-75 min queues for a 1minute ride is deemed a fun day out by so many. Especially when it is for young children. It was a 60 min wait to have one slide down the Paw Patrol heater skelter. Two rides broke down whilst we were in the queue waisting 1 hr 20 mins of our day. Children were in tears. And then there is the surprise car park fee at the end.

I love The Walker and The Maritime.

I’ve been to Turkey there was 1 pervy barman at our hotel but apart from that we were left alone. 1 bar we went to in Hiseronough had topless barmen dancing on the bar to YMCA. They can be quite old fashioned but they were entertaining. It was the white British men that were groping not the Turkish.

Malta - i was so bored! Also went to the algarve Portrugal and didn’t enjoy it at all, it was expensive, couldn’t find anything other than english food and bars which is the opposite of what i want on holiday. Id love to return to portrugal but not there.

You need to go back! Portugal has so many unspoilt areas and wonderful simple but delicious food. Even on the algarve - so many beautiful parts.

New York, people were rude from the moment we got inside JFK to when we were back on the plane home. Poor customer service too. The place is very overrated in our opinion. (Even our teens were underwhelmed. )

I can’t stand the place either.

Boston - probably not really the whole city, but a "Tea Party" tour made me feel like the whole city was unwelcoming to Biritsh visitors.

Basically the tour guide got everyone to repeatedly boo me as the only English person on the tour!

Nowadays I'd take it in good humour but I was only 16 at the time and visiting family friends alone!! It was my first time other than school trips away from home and I was also feeling homesick, so didn't really enjoy being "ganged up" on by strangers for shit that people unrelated to me, did a few hundred years ago!!

This is horrendous. Adults ganging up on a teenager on her own. Did they think it was funny? I am so sorry you experienced that.

Were they Americans or tourists? Why would anyone even care that much and then blame a child???

Can't understand why Vienna's here.

I cant understand Rome. Ok could be disappointing, depending on individual experience, but worst?!

Hollywoods Nightclub in Ipswich in circa 1997/98.

I went to a club called Butterflies once in Burnley - circa 1988 - and got spat on. The girls were swilling pints and fighting as we left.
Just the name of your choice I’m getting grim vibes.

Alcatraz, you could feel the life drain out of you as you stepped off the boat, took the next boat back.

I loved Alcatraz but in fairness its purpose was to be a pretty bleak place and they have done a great job at maintaining that darkness.
