I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

To be fair I avoid all of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, flags everywhere and very EDL.

Derby is a little bit nicer and Derbyshire is obviously beautiful.

The poster she was replying to suggested that due to her dislike of Kirby in Ashfield / Mansfield she should avoid Greece! One of the strangest comments on here.

Los Angeles - hands down the hole I wouldn’t go back to if you paid me.

Agree. I have never come across men as bad as in Turkey, even the men in Morocco weren't as bad. We got harassed and pulled by men everywhere. I had a massage and the man doing it groped my breasts and tried to get me to meet him for sex. Then another sleazy man at the hotel pushed me near a wall and kissed my neck and grabbed my bum and wouldn't let me go. I've heard from lots of women this is normal for Turkey. I would never go again and won't even let my daughter go!

This is funny but not funny. We were warned about pervy men in Turkey so I was prepared for gropey men. My ex was a very handsome man, very fit and muscular. He got whistled at, grabbed at in the street and perved on. Turkish men shouted out 'Ehhh Rambo' and grabbed his biceps.

Looking back, it was a bit weird 🤨

Turkey, never again.
Egypt slightly better, but still yuk

I have to stick up for Birmingham! I was there for three years and it is one of the friendliest places I have ever lived. It has improved a lot compared to how it used to be. It's not a holiday destination admittedly.

Hollywood. Once you've seen the Chinese theater and the foot and handprints there's nothing there.

Even that dusty dirty street was like Blackpool - tat shops and tattoo shops. Hated the place, never felt so unsafe. Cairo and Soho Road in B’ham are like havens in comparison.

Alcatraz, you could feel the life drain out of you as you stepped off the boat, took the next boat back.

BlackRowan · 01/08/2026 18:49

Magaluf about 20 years ago 😂

Jackiepumpkinhead · 01/08/2026 18:49

Sharm el Sheikh.

Margate, holidayed there as a child and loved it, went back in the 2000’s and it was awfully run down. Think it may be improving though.

Isle of Wight, I go there a lot to visit family and friends. They all talk about how beautiful the island is, and I just don’t see it.

Paignton, dump.

Oh I love Naples! I wouldn't stay long but the centre of Naples is romantic, and Vesuvius is atmospheric, glowering about the city!

And the pizza is like no pizza I have ever tasted. Mama mia!

It's a perfect stop-off on the way to see Pompei.

Yes the pizza is amazing, and so cheap compared with the price of pizzas here, which are but poor imitations.

I was a flight attendant for for a Middle Eastern airline and the worst place I’ve been was Dhaka in Bangladesh. It was during a major flood as well.

Venice is hauntingly beautiful if you choose the right moment, and a utter tourist trap if it's high summer and a cruise ship has just disgorged its passener body.

The large ships have been banned in Venice now, thankfully.

What, you visited whole country including most gorgeous hotels? 😂 or is that a judgement based on some cheap hotel experience ? 😂

Well any number. Rotherham was pretty bad. Krakow in 1989. Acapulco. Gosport.

I was in Krakow in 1989 on a school trip. I experienced so much racism and it was so open and obvious and one time I thought I was going to get spat at. It’s supposed to be beautiful but all I remember was the racism and Auschwitz.

BobbysDazzler · 01/08/2026 18:54

Blackpool. Total shithole.

Still loving this thread, so grateful to be at HOME!

Were you the poster who asked why people travel to other places? From my POV I see somewhere that I like the look of on TV someone’s photos etc and think I would like to see it for myself. I also like to get a bit of warmth in the UK winter.

You say 20 yrs ago. I was in Magaluf 26 yrs ago and had a lovely week with my DH and our 2 small children. Not high season, though, last week in May. Also, we were right out at one end in a 4 star hotel with lots of families.

Anyone have anything good to say about Chicago? I had a quick stop-over there and wasn't overly impressed. Deep-dish pizza...underwhelming.

Enjoyed Chicago. Museums, galleries, the aquarium, easy to get around, interesting neighbourhoods.

Basingstoke, Slough and Croyden are however not for me.

Tunisia. The constant harassment was horrendous. Cut the holiday short. Never again.

Me too, but was 40 odd years ago
