I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Hong Kong. It was still good but I'm a novelty seeker and just not enough to do/see. I would still recommend it, I just wouldn't visit again (vs. China or Japan) unless they had more interesting novelty things to check out.

I live on the outskirts of Hull. If you find the right areas it’s not bad. But the city centre is pretty dire. However, museum quarter and the marina is lovely.
There are some lovely areas to live on the outskirts and good restaurants etc.

I realise most of the places I have visited are lovely as we go to places we think we will like.
I found the island of Kos a bit barren when you compare it to the lushness of Corfu
i love most coastal areas but very disappointed with Weston as I like blue sea not brown !

Kerkira is in the Ionian Islands, which is green and lush as opposed to an island in Dodecanisa - like Kos.

Honestly, do some of you never look at a map, do any research.. ?

I have second hand embarrassment for so many commenting here.

Most British seaside towns are as depressing as hell

I totally agree. Even the nicer ones. I just feel a twinge of depression when I hear a sea gull.

You should have gone to Banksy's temporary 'theme park' Dismaland, in Weston-super-Mare.

Menorca. Never been more bored.

OMG!! I don't know what you were expecting, if you did any research at all before you decided to visit or where you stayed but being 'bored' on wonderful Menorca massively has to say so much more about you than it does about the peaceful and tranquil totally beautiful little unique island! 🙄
It has endless totally stunning beaches and small very private bays fabulous for swimming and snorkelling which rival nearly all the many places I have ever visited over my long life, even the Caribbean!
The old capital Ciutadella has medieval Italian-style streets with atmospheric sodium lighting that looks out of this world at night and there is an amazing gothic cathedral and some very upmarket shops and galleries... the vibrant lovely harbour is full of great places to eat and to finish off, the ice cream at the bottom of the steps has never been beaten not even by Roskilly's in Cornwall!! 😊

Barcelona, Spain and Warri, Nigeria (though the latter was for work.

bamboo12 · 01/08/2026 19:31

Absolutely you will find the friendliest people in Hull!

Alcatraz, you could feel the life drain out of you as you stepped off the boat, took the next boat back.

I loved Alcatraz though. On the day I was wearing cotton trousers with even, broad blue/white stripes, as the NP boat pulled in the person greeting us as we stepped off the boat called to me 'I'm see pleased to see that you have entered into the spirit of the visit' and pointed to photos of old occupants, all wearing trousers with even, broad blue/white stripes! I don't suppose it's meant to be a happy place, I would imagine that the prisoners felt the life draining out of them.

Lloret De Mar - Spain in 2008 - what a run down dump. 1st evening, walked out the hotel and their was blood everywhere and a very injured beaten up Spaniard lying on the road. Horrible hotel, horrible area. Couldn't wait to leave.

Scarborough England in 2025 - what a dump unless you like arcades. Such a shame as it must have been a great beach town back in the day.

Falkirk Wheel - Scotland in 2026 - omg never been so bored in my life. Amazing engineering but the most tedious experience ever.

Always baffled when people diss Scarborough. If you don't like the arcades, why stay around that very small area? Only a bit further round the bay starting at the footbridge there are emptier beaches and quite idyllic coastal paths through heath and woodland with spectacular views and plentiful wildlife, including cavorting dolphins. And that's without even visiting the quieter North Bay. It's a town steeped in history with a thriving arts, music & theatre scene and numerous annual festivals. I've lived and travelled all over the UK and moving here 10 years ago was the best decision of my life.

Manchester with its chaotic pedestrian-unfriendly city centre is the worst place I've lived. Liverpool is the worst place I've visited - but the centre was chocka with building sites at the time.

Thailand, first day I got the Bangkok belly and spent most of my holiday in the loo. It's so hot and full of creepy crawly insects. The people are nice and there is lots to do and see. But keep out of the sun, sunburn is yuk

The large ships have been banned in Venice now, thankfully.

Good, I couldn't believe they were ever allowed, considering the problems Venice has.

I didn’t know we were being judged for intelligence and research just opinions asked for. I was only 19 on a beach holiday when we went to Kos , just wanted a sunny beach holiday!

Chessington world of adventures. Worst day of 2026 so far. I don’t understand how 60-75 min queues for a 1minute ride is deemed a fun day out by so many. Especially when it is for young children. It was a 60 min wait to have one slide down the Paw Patrol heater skelter. Two rides broke down whilst we were in the queue waisting 1 hr 20 mins of our day. Children were in tears. And then there is the surprise car park fee at the end.

After visiting Disney in Tokyo and Florida I simply can't enjoy the UK parks anymore. There is a lack of organisation and theming, a total disregard for visitor experience, and the entrance price does not justify it either. It's actually shocking how bad our parks are compared to the rest of the world. I'm not sure if it's because the weather is so bad here that it's not worth investing in, so they've just given up, maybe.

... I revisited Legoland as an adult (we often went as children) and it was in such a poor state... the models were falling apart and some looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years, thick with muck ... seriously how little effort does it take to grab a hose and wash down a Lego model!? The cleanest and most modern thing was the shop at the exit, lol.

I have high hopes for the United Kingdom Universal they are building, as a lot of that will be indoors and Universal are good at theming. It will be a historic screw-up if they manage to make that a failure too.

Rochdale. Had to ho for work a few years ago. I try not to judge but it was just so run down, felt scary and well, just dreadful

For me was Rio de Janeiro. Mainly felt unsafe.
I felt very safe in India and going every year now. My absolute favourite.

I lived in Rio and would happily go back 😎 I did feel unsafe when I first arrived, though - culture shock.

I'd like to visit North Africa but don't know how well I'd cope with all the patriarchy. This thread isn't reassuring!

Next month, I'm visiting Walsall for a few days. It consistently comes top of the 'worst places to live in the UK' lists. Can't wait 😂

Jackiepumpkinhead · 01/08/2026 19:38

Koh Tao in Thailand had such an eerie atmosphere. Was there in 2000 and am not surprised by the awful stories about the place now. Couldn’t wait to leave.

Crosorbled · 01/08/2026 19:38

Lisbon - full of graffiti , shown a lot of run down areas by the guide & the funicular was a complete disappointment.

YRGAM · 01/08/2026 19:38

It's not the worst or most boring place I've been (that would be Barnsley) but given its reputation I really disliked St Petersburg. Grey, rough, cold, and unfriendly. I much preferred Moscow which has a worse reputation

Hull bus station ladies' loos late one Saturday afternoon many years ago, tying with the loos in Nuweiba, waiting for sunset to come (Ramadan) and the ferry would start to carry us up to Aqaba, I think Aqaba.

NoisyViper · 01/08/2026 19:41

Marrakech, Morocco. Slummy, overcrowded and not a very friendly place

Can't understand why Vienna's here.

Vienna's beautiful 🥰
