A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Just seen a head line that the north sea oil issue that should be sorted yesterday are being delayed for months because back benchers have kicked off..

So we go into another winter with fuel issues.

Great. Its been put into the too hard box then.

Andy is out and about again today, talking about buses. Confused

He likes them.

There are busses in every post code.

Nuthatch26 · 18/08/2026 10:11

The lovely Greens, spreading hope and peace again. Can you imagine a Labour/Green coalition?

Participants in a private WhatsApp group used by Green members discussed “killing Zionists” and described the majority of Israeli Jews as “genociders”.

Small town thinking indeed.
What a joke

Interesting podcast I heard this morning from Dominic Cummings. Raynor Burnham etc are all just puppets given scripts for cabinet meetings. The decisions are made by civil servants. Blair made civil servants unaccountable legally. They're anonymous but hold the power.

Now I've always thought this. Liz Truss said it. Nadine norries wrote a book about it. Hell BBC made series about it.

As an ex civil servant, I can say that it is true. For example, who really knows about a department and the art of the possible? Meanwhile a civil servant has risen up through the grades and is often a complete SME in their niche area. Senior CS corral this knowledge from below and use it to guide decisions taken in the department centre by the ministers and senior departmental personnel. But the minister will uphold the stated party policy on whatever the department concerns.
How did you think it works? And have you never watched ‘Yes Minister’?

I don’t entirely follow either Cummings’s point (summarised by the PP, TBF) or yours.

Cummings seems to be saying that Burnham and other ministers have no policies, they’re just given them by the civil service, which I find hard to believe.

You seem to be saying that the civil service researches and advises but doesn’t make decisions (“But the minister will uphold the stated party policy on whatever the department concerns”), but that you agree with Cummings. 🤷‍♀️

Well now that the government has handed over responsibility and power to the energy companies for rolling blackouts if needed I'm really glad we have candles, torches and a log burner to fall back on.

Yes, the civil service code states that the civil service is apolitical and should follow the policies of the government in power (can’t recall the exact wording).

However, I’d suggest that more modern government members might think they don’t need the advice before rushing to offer a soundbite. That never ends well.

And it accounts for Starmer, Milliband, Reeve's and Raynor's many unpopular decisions. Now it's Burnham towing the line.

Blair set this up while in power to fuck up the conservatives, who btw never repealed it. Cameron was doomed, Ditto Boris, Sunak. No-one can deviate, most aren't smart enough to be honest. The civil service machine always wins.

SapphireCasino · 18/08/2026 13:01

@justasking111 none of that explains why the civil Service make the decisions they make though. Every decision that gets made, I’m left thinking “but whyyyyyyyyyy”

And why do they hate Britain and British people? And why do they hate us soooo much?

Yep, if you're disabled you'll get free bus travel 24/7.

Burnham continues to pussyfoot; the serious stuff can be left to the Whitehall mandarins to dictate as they see fit.

IME a lot of those mandarins tend to be more along the lines of One Nation Tory types rather than the socialist "blob" of Truss's fantasies.

I was amused to see that the government page announcing this change has a big puff for the Prime Minister in the headline and in the first paragraph, and then lower down says:

Currently, disabled bus passes are only valid for travel between 9.30am and 11pm during weekdays, unless local authorities choose to fund an extension. For example, Greater Manchester Combined Authority permanently lifted the time restrictions from March this year.

A quick google shows that disabled passes already give free travel all the time on buses (and trains) in London. No doubt there are other areas that also operate extensions. It’s ‘curious’ that the one area highlighted is, er, Manchester when Burnham was mayor.

Burnham is running the risk of gaining a reputation as a tedious little self-promoting charlatan.

Yep.

So bizarre. The news headlines today talking about threats from Russia, dangerous men being released early, dire unemployment figures, children being radicalised etc.

And there's Andy, sat on a bus, talking about Manchester. 🙄

We've got a mayor, not a PM. The next three years are going to be interesting à la the Chinese proverb.

This made me laugh.

Farming minister feels faint at the sight of beef. 😂😂

One local farmer, who knew about the incident, said: “He’d been shown large chunks of beef as well as some steaks but then he felt faint."He said something like, ‘I don’t feel too well — I need a moment.’”He added: “It’s not a great look for the farming minister to faint at the sight of meat.”

I am sick of this interminable summer! I want cool weather, light rain, and Kemi taking chunks out of Burnham at PMQs.

Things are going pear shaped and you would expect Reform to be making the running on small boats, Ceuta, stranger rspes spiking, etc. but where are they? Just Tice telling me to enjoy the heat!

I can give you cool weather and quite a bit of rain if you travel this way? My water butt is brimming after last night's rain, with more to come tonight!

Sadly I can't offer the gift of Kemi at PMQs. But 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
