A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Arday's death is a tragedy, but it shouldn't detract from the necessity for a full investigation as to how his appointment came about in the first place. There are still questions that need to be answered.

Nuthatch26 · 15/08/2026 10:27

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 15/08/2026 10:18

Someone on a different thread has reminded that the media interest began after a diligent investigation by a Times Higher Education journalist who was then legally threatened by Arday and reported to police. That was after an academic was threatened by Arday for questioning him privately about suspected plagiarism.

Sad as this whole affair has been, I do not think the media carry any blame.

I also think the posters comparing Arday to Caroline Flack have misunderstood what led to her suicide. Again, it wasn’t the media.

Agree.
I haven't read any threads on this, but I can use my imagination as to what some are saying.

Yes I’ve had a read of some, it’s full on.

Sorry to hear this, I hope she’s ok.

Using the system when it’s not an actual alert is probably a mistake. They only get to do that once, if they overuse it as a system people will tune out.

She's still sleeping after a long night, but thank you. I took her outside so she could smell that there was nothing nearby, but it didn't calm her unfortunately.
We had fires a few weeks ago and you could really smell it. Heavy rain put them out thankfully.
To make things worse, she got another alert at around 11pm. Just her phone though, nobody else in the house got it! She spiralled after that. I think I'll switch them off on her phone.

I try not to be too cynical and I try even harder not to imagine bad motives for this sort of thing. But I just can’t help feeling that this is a form of government advertising, to give the impression of activity and leadership.

I probably fell into thinking that after I heard about recent pointless COBRA meetings that both Starmer and Burnham have convened and publicised. I read an account years ago of the Tories - Cameron I think it was - using COBRA meetings as a way of hyping events for public consumption. For show, in other words.

Apparently, politicians love COBRA as it sounds all secret service and dramatic (though is just the acronym for a particular room) but nothing comes from them that a routine boring meeting couldn’t have managed.

Yes Times radio had similar on COBRA, it’s a pr type event. Starmer and Burnham probably wanted the opposite to Johnson who got a lot of heat for not turning up so now we must hear about many COBRA meetings.

No, the media reported the story. He was failed by academia, who put him in a position he was unqualified for in an effort to appear oh so progressive. Any blame is at their door, not the journalists who exposed his lies.

If journalists are not allowed to report on stories like this, then academia will continue to operate as they do now, with no checks and balances.

Absolutely, it’s cynical and manipulative to use his death to distract everyone from the mischief going on in universities.

Yes I think this is right. But used incorrectly as we've seen, they become a mockery.
The Lib Dems are constantly calling for COBRAs to be held. Rolls eyes.

I signed out of the alerts ages ago, from the very beginning I think?

I heard some people got them at 4 am as well.

I think COBRA is Cabinet Office briefing room but someone figured out that COBRA meeting sounded good.

RoseInAPot · 15/08/2026 11:45

Yes it’s Cabinet Office Briefing Room A.
Convenient acronym, sounds all James Bondish.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 15/08/2026 13:06

On that urgent alert business, I’ve just this morning had a chat with a friend in which the alert got mentioned. I was surprised that she, staunchly Labour, was quite upset about it as a misuse of government emergency provisions. I was even more surprised that she said her son, who is a civil service high-flyer, was equally damning of it as an abusive gimmick.

I feel a lot less guilty now about having my doubts.

I'm pretty sure is that the minor incidents that are discussed in Cabinet Office Briefing Room B just never feature on the news.

Room C is probably used for drying out cycling kit and listening to Heart FM at lunchtime.

EasternStandard · 15/08/2026 13:22

We don’t hear much about what is decided. Maybe they all go in and have biscuits for a bit.

Like the coalition of the willing carry on, but they had probably had croissants. Remember that era? Omg bloody coalition of the willing. Tg that’s over.

RoseInAPot · 15/08/2026 13:43

That was such a pantomime. I saw Michael Portillo talking about it in caustic terms at the time of Starmer’s launch. He was really quite angry about how the ‘coalition’ was a misleading stunt that all its members knew could never be acted on.

I can’t believe posters on here lapped it up and repeated lines.

What a farce. I can take disposable bbq comms over that 😅

It’s a temporary ban isn’t it? But at least it’s not “subject to a public interest test” as it would have been under Starmer.

I got one at this time in Welsh again but followed in English. DH hasn't had a single alert.

Having watched our mountain out of the window on fire for a few days. Families including our son's advised to standby for evacuation at any moment, three grandkids distressed by the fire 🔥 on the mountain from their bedroom window.

This is too little too late. The arsonists are having fun lighting them , they don't care who's at risk farm animals, wildlife or human life.

Sorry to hear that. It was moorland near us that was up in flames, but thankfully we got rain. Started by idiots, but they were caught this time. Yes the devastation to flora and fauna is awful.

According to the DT, the decision to put the alert out in Welsh first is under review by the Welsh govt. Not a good look for them.
