A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@Nuthatch26 I don’t think she would be shut down, I think she is more likely to start an argument.

Now that I’ve bumped into her in a work situation, I think it’s even more important to keep her on side

I think the main thing is just to keep quiet, really. I was genuinely surprised because I would have thought that she would want to be more neutral in a work environment.

I always got the impression that her standard of work was incredibly high….and I saw it firsthand today. Really excellent.

And my bugbear about work standards remains - a lot of people really don’t seem to care at all about having any work standards now - so she will definitely be a useful contact to have.

Something else I’ve noticed recently is people using completely the wrong terminology

And if somebody questions it, they will say “oh you know what I mean”. Often it’s not possible for a complete stranger to know what you mean. This seems particularly applicable in political discussions.

I’m a bit fascinated by the shorthand that some of us use in terms of Internet slang and so on and I realise language evolves and has whole different meanings but these are just… the wrong words. And you can be having a totally mad conversation and it feels like a work meeting where somebody needs to issue a terms of reference guide!

Blimey that’s a bit much!

I know. A bit obsessive and v creepy.

Very sad news Jason Arday has been found dead at his home. Whatever the details of his lies, this really is horrible that he felt he could no longer live because of his mental strength.

Jeez, has everyone had one of those emergency alerts on their phone just now warning of wildfires? I jumped out of my effing skin!

Yes.

Burnham needs to get a grip on water right now.

Id the water issues hadnt been left for decades unregulated by many governments we wouldn't be in such a horrific mess.

I've never ever seen as many leaks as we have now.

I'm glad for the alert .

Government programming in operation, people are being trained to jump alongside the obvious propaganda within schools. This one was particularly good one for Labour because they could achieve two thing bang on about 'Climate' Change and secondly acquire the attention of the public.

This, of course as the Man of the 'Plebs' was seen in Stourbridge today without a tie, probably noticing how big the houses were near the Golf Club. Therefore, we had Manchester dreaming how many of them he can get with 'Wealth taxes' . Though, probably thinking how many of them will be vacant by those not fleeing fire but the Labour Government thus plenty of space and rooms available for the Boot People !

Yes two messages both in Welsh. I only understood 999. As did many who then dialled 999. The police had to put up messages on social media saying only to call in an emergency 🙄

Its batshit, more froth than a foam party out there in the wild west. 😂

Yes to your comment on AI though. I have been reliably informed, by she who shall remain nameless, that some are using AI to track posters across threads and check history. This is why so many are name changing regularly. I know you've been concerned about all the name changes, but hope this explains why some feel its necessary.

Edited

Mumsnet could ban name changing for a month to give us all some peace.

Oh dear

I don't think that was appropriate use of the emergency messaging service, but that's why I opted out of it.

You're never using the wrong word, though. On this thread, it's usually just for clarification.

This is just an example, but it's like if somebody uses the term tax avoidance when they actually mean tax evasion. Although I suppose even HMRC have been doing that... on a discussion board it is harder to know if a poster is gaslighting, being disingenuous or having a genuine misunderstanding.

No, the media reported the story. He was failed by academia, who put him in a position he was unqualified for in an effort to appear oh so progressive. Any blame is at their door, not the journalists who exposed his lies.

If journalists are not allowed to report on stories like this, then academia will continue to operate as they do now, with no checks and balances.

Did you get the alert in English too? No wonder it caused panic. Its astonishing that an emergency alert was sent out in a language that 2.5 million people in Wales don't speak. Muppets.

I don't think this was an appropriate use of the emergency alert system. If this is how the govt choose to use it, more will opt out - me included. My DD who has autism was panicking all night, even after I'd explained that there was no emergency nearby.

Yes it was sad to read the headline, but agree too.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/08/2026 10:18

Exactly. I see Jolyon Maugham is already blaming the media, despite the “Good Law Project” participating in this shitshow.

Someone on a different thread has reminded that the media interest began after a diligent investigation by a Times Higher Education journalist who was then legally threatened by Arday and reported to police. That was after an academic was threatened by Arday for questioning him privately about suspected plagiarism.

Sad as this whole affair has been, I do not think the media carry any blame.

I also think the posters comparing Arday to Caroline Flack have misunderstood what led to her suicide. Again, it wasn’t the media.

I agree. They said they would only use it for local and national emergencies. Unless in an area where there was a wildfire actually happening this was a public service announcement, however important. Its scope creep, and people will turn off the alerts. It’s not hard to imagine them doing it for other “preventative” things.

Sorry to hear this, I hope she’s ok.

Using the system when it’s not an actual alert is probably a mistake. They only get to do that once, if they overuse it as a system people will tune out.

I think there’s inevitably going to be a lazy “Hashtag be kind v2.0” and a lot of people don’t actually know what they’re talking about in either case.
