A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Not a Reform supporter myself (although I would consider voting for them at the next GE if it means getting this truely awful Labour government out).

But I’ve learned that ‘Bin Face’ is actually BBC script writer and producer Jon Harvey. And I saw this headline on the BBC news page this morning which, although Binface lost, the Beeb are hailing it as a success 🤔

I thought the Beeb claimed to be politically neutral. Clearly not!

Hmm. I’m glad it’s over tbf. Enough summer of the bin for me.

Just worked out Count Binface got 28% of the vote! Fair play.

Left vs right really. In which case (given his connections to the Beeb, and all the media attention and celeb backing), it isn’t that great a result for BF is it.

TBH, I don’t think there’s a lot you can read into this charade of a by-election.

Farage is making a fool of himself. He may very well be back in front of the Clacton voters again in a few months.

Turnout of just 44.37%.

Surely any election with less than 50% turnout should be declared void.

The mayors election in Manchester got a 25.4%. Turnout . They haven't voided that election.

John Curtice was saying it wasn’t particularly low for a by-election

That’s pretty dismal, not to mention depressing, but I’d argue that Mayoral elections are not as key as by-elections/General elections.

I know they won’t void it, I just think they should void all elections under 50%.

Nige is nothing more than a snake oil salesman and Reform (by which I mean those in charge, not the voters or party members) are by and large a bunch of charlatans. I wouldn’t vote for them under any circumstances.

Most of the by-elections have been under 50%

Same, glad its over. I hope the residents of Clacton can enjoy whats left of summer in peace. Sick of reading insults and derogatory comments about them.

Given that Binface usually loses his deposit, it is a great result. Plus he has entertained people along the way.

Farage has made himself look like the thin-skinned little prick that he is. He has been caught lying yet again too.

I prefer the Conservatives and Kemi to Reform, but I wouldn’t call Farage a charlatan. I think he is awkward and flawed but sincere. He has been hugely consequential as well. He has shifted the debate and moved the centre of politics.

The Conservatives botched Brexit, the general public wanted it, but instead of cracking on and making a success of it, they wasted time trying to placate remainers who would never be satisfied anyway. (I actually voted Remain because I am a cynic.). We ended up with the worst of all possible worlds, not in the EU and not taking advantage of our freedoms.

How different things would be if the Conservatives had acted on Brexit with conviction and had given Farage his due, perhaps a seat in the House of Lords? Instead the right is split and the loony left is having a hay day.

You're right about the headline, just opened your link. Yes, the BBC showing their bias again.

Edited to say posted this to the wrong thread (was intended for the thread about Burnham moving ASs to middle class areas, but will leave here.

The cynic in me thinks this isn’t about moving asylum seekers into middle class areas, but moving new Labour voters into Tory areas.

It’s pretty blatant but moreover it just adds to people’s irritation which ends up swinging votes towards Reform.

Plus lose them licence fee payers.

Absolutely 🎯
They are their own worst enemy. Same for those who bang on about Farage 24/7. It actually helps him.

I’d respectfully disagree about Farage not being a charlatan but I agree that he is consequential. His lies over Brexit (£350 million for the NHS anyone), his claims to be just an ordinary bloke (how many ordinary blokes do you know whose primary career was as a city trader? He, like far too many politicians, has never worked a day in his life), the accusations around his behaviour at school and now pulling stunts like this latest one, not to mention all the dodgy financial stuff. I’m afraid for me that makes him a charlatan.

But anyway, off my high horse I get - this is a thread about the incumbent Government and I don’t want to derail it.

I appreciate that no one in here attempts to hound me out for my views on Reform, it’s almost as if we’re all grown ups 😜

Reading this morning about the Stourbridge fire having three separate origins I'm wishing the government would ban tik tok where people have been encouraged to start fires.

I find that quite funny given that many (deranged) commentators on the left think the BBC is shilling for Farage.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/08/2026 13:02

When I say “commentators” I mean “idiots on Reddit and BlueSky” of course.

I love how they boycott X, yet post Bluesky stuff proudly.

Yeah, that’s weirdly paranoid of the left. I think the BBC gets it just about right over time. But if there’s any baked-in bias it’s metropolitan centre left, not remotely rightish.

Yes that’s always pretty funny when the same people post some “skeet” from some BlueSky gobshite they agree with.
