A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Not really in a position to throw stones is she?

She’s been in government after government but it’s always someone else’s fault.

I do not care if boat tourists where getting only £5 a week, it is totally unaffordable and is another nail in the countries coffin both economically and socially. Burnham explicitly saying affluent communities must take their fair share of illegal immigrants, is evidence, that the left no longer need to even hide their intentions. This, the destruction of the traditional largely indigenous middle class rural or even 'dormitory' communities that Labour perceive as 'Gammons'.

Unfortunately many people including middle class and educated professionals buy the 'diversity' cool aid propaganda . In effect they are actually helping with their own eventual demise. The aim of all Labour- Lib Dem or Green politicians is the destruction of generational way of small town or country way of living.

I was responding to the specific point that the UK is apparently more attractive because of its benefit rates.

What does indigenous mean in this context?

Well the PM has managed to piss off a lot of people at my end with his comments yesterday lumping betting shops in with vape shops and criminal enterprises on the high street. Never mind that betting shops are highly regulated, pay tons of tax, employ 1000s of people and provide a perfectly legal past-time for the general public.

He’s one of those holier than thou types who thinks people shouldn’t be allowed to decide how to spend their own money and cite gambling as being the root of all evil. No mention that pubs can also cause similar issues around addiction etc I noticed.

The facts are that there are far fewer betting shops then there have ever been (someone quoted the stat of 18,000 in 1980 compared to about 4,000 now) and research shows that despite the number of people gambling dropping, the rates of “problem gambling” remain the same, suggesting that it’s not the product that is at fault per se.

I should add that I am referring to betting shops - where you pop your £5 on the football or the gee gees - and not the slot machine centres which I agree are a blight and designed to take your money off you.

Good paper here on the developments with betting shops. I think the 18k figure is quite a bit higher than what I can find in the research. Decline in the number of shops was steepest immediately after Covid because so many people went online (which obvs wasn’t an option in 1980). The rate of decline is now quite small and beating many other kinds of high street business.

Also betting shops have fixed odds betting terminals which are incredibly harmful. When you mention the slot machine centres this is actually what most betting shops are now in terms of directing customers towards fobts. It’s not sitting around with a crowd of fellow enthusiasts watching a race, it’s pumping money into a screen that is designed to get you addicted.

Nope! It’s in Wiltshire, enough said.

Lovely village/small town with a nice old fashioned baker.

It made me smile for multiple reasons, she went to a private girls school. She left the LSE (very prestigious, very serious) to go to Nottingham (still good, but known as a bit of an acceptable party school back then.) Misinforms the police as a young adult about her phone, etc.

It is catty, but I am building up a picture of an entitled posh girl, not that bright.

Annoys me for two reasons:

  1. She represents a cadre of people who will dump on private schools kids no matter how hard they work and what they achieve.
  2. Working class people tend to be really scrupulous; they don’t accidentally forget to tell the police about phones they report stolen.

It is a leap, but my gut emotional reaction is that she is entitled and spoiled and wearing a mantle she does not deserve, while taking shots at people who work hard and don’t break the rules.

I have a family connection to Bristol, but I did find myself nodding along as I read this essay.

I suspect they're hoping that the protests we've been seeing recently won't happen in middle class areas.

I think they might be surprised...

strawberrybubblegum · 13/08/2026 19:45

It's just so obvious that the response to a sanctimonious "everyone must play their part and take some of the hardship"

is...

" well stop the bloody boats then, and deport the illegal immigrants. ffs"

It's a complete own goal.

It’s a ridiculous line. Labour use it for everything. They’ll be making pleas we should all play a part in bring crime victims soon.

Yep. Massive own goal, but they must insert class into everything. Idiots.

Polls have closed in Clacton. I’m sure Nigel will win but I can’t wait for the pictures of him alongside Count Binface.

Farage has been very foolish. He has nothing to gain from this unnecessary by-election but a great deal to lose from the ridicule, even though he’ll obviously hold the seat.

And he still has to account for the £5m and the Cottrell money.

He’s shot himself in the foot.

Apparently he's not turning up for the declaration.

He holds the process and the job in contempt. He's an awful man.

CaveMum · 14/08/2026 06:29

”Credible threat” my arse!

He’s the utter epitome of “I’m taking my ball home” isn’t he.

I hope Count Binface is there and gives dozens of interviews talking about what a coward Nige is.

Well I guess we’ll be back for another by-election in a few months time.

This ‘credible threat’ claim sounds very strange. The BBC is reporting that Essex police have said they’re not advising any candidate to stay away.

Farage can make himself look shifty even after a clear win in the most Reformy constituency in the whole country.

RosieHosie · 14/08/2026 06:31

NoWordForFluffy · 14/08/2026 06:13

He holds the process and the job in contempt. He's an awful man.

He used saying Essex police advised him not to attend as there was a credible threat against him. They are saying they haven't advised anyone to stay away. Anyway, he has won, but Count Binface got a respectable 9455 votes. Bring on the investigation and the real by-election.

CaveMum · 14/08/2026 06:31

Turnout of just 44.37%.

Surely any election with less than 50% turnout should be declared void.

RosieHosie · 14/08/2026 06:32

Cross posts!

CaveMum · 14/08/2026 06:33

Just worked out Count Binface got 28% of the vote! Fair play.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 14/08/2026 06:52

Five people were killed and others horribly injured in the Brighton bombing. Thatcher went on with the conference. She appeared on stage six hours after the explosion.

Farage can’t even turn up for the result of an election he called himself, supposedly because of a ‘threat’ that the police haven’t even acknowledged. He’s a pathetic little man.

EasternStandard · 13/08/2026 21:29

Don't give them ideas!

If Labour had thought of it, they would redirect what few police we have left to their favourite areas, so that we can take our 'fair turn' being mugged.

strawberrybubblegum · 14/08/2026 07:09

They wouldn't share the crime, overcrowding and expense of London fairly across the country though. Oh no. We 'deserve' to keep those problems all to ourselves.

NoWordForFluffy · 14/08/2026 07:39

Farage essentially gained 1,000 votes on top of his GE vote tally. I think that shows he has a hardcore of about that many voters supporting him in Clacton, but there isn't a huge willingness to throw a vote his way more generally when there are no other parties standing (i.e. the almost-13k Tory voters didn't lend him their vote en masse). I think that's encouraging really.

Let the investigation re-commence!

TeaAndALittlePeace · 14/08/2026 07:56

Not a Reform supporter myself (although I would consider voting for them at the next GE if it means getting this truely awful Labour government out).

But I’ve learned that ‘Bin Face’ is actually BBC script writer and producer Jon Harvey. And I saw this headline on the BBC news page this morning which, although Binface lost, the Beeb are hailing it as a success 🤔

I thought the Beeb claimed to be politically neutral. Clearly not!
