A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Morning 😁

Welcome back @EasternStandard. Hope you've had a lovely break.

Another case of Labour ideology meets reality. Are they actively trying to kill jobs for young people? It feels that way.
So glad Ange is back in govt (not). Can't wait for her next tranche of bright ideas. 🙄

An official impact statement for Angela Rayner’s signature employment reforms found they would have a negative impact on companies by forcing them to contend with new red tape, extra staffing costs and lost revenue.
The government analysis found that sectors such as hospitality and retail, which have already borne the brunt of increases in national insurance and the minimum wage, would be worst affected by the changes.
It also warned that the plans would make it harder for employers to respond to changes in demand, with potential knock-on impacts on revenue and investment.

Thanks! 😀 it was lovely.

Different to get back to hot weather this year rather than a chilly journey back from the airport. Plus not so bad to return to Burnham v the badness of returning with Starmer in. Although not sure how long AB’s bounce will last.

Jobs situation is so worrying for young people. Not much from pro Labour on how bad it is.

Councils seem to be full of people with no common sense and a love of wasting money on really terrible things. I don’t understand how they get away with it.

So it seems. I’m a parish councillor and we’re working with an average Parish budget, a precept drawn from the unitary authority budget - diddly squat really. We carefully discuss how we spend that money, with a hard one £15k recently being spent on upgrading our public toilets (the only free toilets in the south west). We apply for grants and juggle what we have.
But it’s long confused me how there can be such a disparity between funding available - how did Cambridge get a spare million to splaff on these loos? How can they dismiss complaints with a cheery offer to replace them if not used - and at what cost?
To my mind it’s indicative of the absolute imbalance of ongoing life in the UK.

Edited to add: it suddenly dawned on me the one big difference - us parish councillors are unpaid and get zero recompense. We live in the community we represent. That becomes far removed the bigger the local authority, with more earning big salaries.

Payment for cancelling a shift was something that happened with the gastro pub my son worked part-time in for five years. His time was made up by other flakier employees who cancelled last minute themselves. All it will mean is much slower service and disgruntled customers if this goes ahead.

Not giving shifts to the flaky employees is a way to protect the business.

Yesterday I was sorting out council bills going back five years. Our council tax has risen £12500/ pa.
The breakdown was another £100 to the police. Another £150 to the town council. The balance of £1000 going to county council.

In five years the cuts have been savage for individuals. Yet they purchased electric dust carts that don't work when they have heavy loads. They collect refuse every four weeks. They've put parking charges in so many places and double yellow lines beyond them. Minimum £4 for four hours if you just want to park for half an hour to nip into the local shops. Or visit the barbers etc.

Our head of councillors is on £71k. That's £30k more than most English councillors. The minimum a councillors job pays is £41k. The pensions are out of control.

Our social care isn't means tested which I think needs looking at. Ditto attendance allowance isn't scrutinized, you can lie away on the form.

I have no respect for our council. It's all noses in the trough.

It was Tony Blair who went on a mission to drive up public sector salaries, wasn't it? And here we are.

I’m curious @Loopylalalou about your toilets comment:

I live in the south west and all the public toilets in our small town are free to use; am I misunderstanding your comment? (Or do we live in the same town? 😎)

From the Taxpayers Alliance in April ‘26:
Revealed – Wiltshire Council bosses earning over £100k a year

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

The number of bosses at Wiltshire Council earning more than £100,000 a year has been revealed.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance has published its annual Town Hall Rich List, with the register identifying six people who earned £100,000 or more in the financial year 2024-25.

However, Wiltshire Council’s own figures show 25 employees received over £100,000 in total remuneration during the period.

Among them are chief executive Lucy Townsend, whose salary in the period was £180,933. The council’s corporate director of place, Parvis Khansari, earned £146,807, while the authority’s director of legal and governance, Perry Holmes, and director of public health, Kate Blackburn, both earned £127,137.

The council’s director of HR and organisational development Tamsin Kielb earned £102,262, while former chief executive Terence Herbert, who was in post until August 19 2024, earned £90,499 of his £191,888 salary.

The top salaries compare favourably to those of neighbouring local authorities.

Swindon Borough Council’s Sam Mowbray earned £179,819 while Hampshire’s CEO Carolyn Williamson raked in £252,317.
In Somerset, the interim chief officer Maria Christofi earned £250,905 while Dorset’s Matt Prosser earned £178,000.

The Taxpayers’ Alliance was scathing of the salaries earned by ‘town hall’ bosses, pointing out that 4,733 council staff now earn more than £100,000 a year across the country – an increase of 21 per cent on last year.
John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Taxpayers are caught in a pincer movement with a record-breaking tax burden on one side and a bloated public sector feathering its nest on the other.

“Our latest Town Hall Rich Sunday evening List exposes a surging class of council bosses enjoying six-figure packages, even as they plead poverty, slash frontline services, and hike council tax bills far beyond inflation.

“Residents can see exactly how many local bureaucrats are receiving plush packages and judge for themselves whether they’re getting value for money.”

Tamsin Kielb, Wiltshire Council’s director of HR and organisational development, said, “These roles are responsible for multi-million pound budgets in a highly complex organisation.
“In order to attract and retain the best and most capable people to deliver value for money you have to pay a suitable wage.

“We benchmark our salaries within the sector and wider job market, which enables us to strike the right balance of attracting talented candidates to our organisation while being as responsible as possible with public money.

“When senior salaries in the private sector are compared to senior salaries in the public sector, the taxpayer gets very good value for money.”

The average salary in Wiltshire in the same financial year was £36,597, according to government statistics, while in the same year the typical FTSE 100 chief executive was on a package of around £4.6 million, according to the High Pay Centre.

Has Alfred?

Loopylalalou · 13/08/2026 10:53

And:
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is currently entitled to a total annual salary of up to £182,436, but traditionally claims a lower frozen amount of £174,039.

How can running a fairly steady state county demand a salary akin, indeed more than a Prime Minister?????

Sorry, don’t get it. Just wondered why you think you have 'the only free toilets in the south west’ but if you don’t want to answer fair enough.

That’s what we’ve been told and if that’s wrong, I apologise.
The ‘Has Alfred’ connects to our village - which I don’t want to expose - but if you were from the same place, you’d have recognised why I put that.

Ah, yes (I think). I boarded at a school in Somerset and have a vague memory of this.

Nope! It’s in Wiltshire, enough said.

Yebbut in Wales we're really extracting the urine. Population 3.8 million. Half of London's population but we've 22 county/borough councils sucking mainly from Westminster's tit and we're demanding independence. I'm bloody embarrassed to be honest.

They do in Wales.

I’ve never heard of that school. Is it fee-paying? I assume so for the references to ‘independent’ on their website. I suppose she could have been a scholar or - dates permitting - an assisted place.

the80sweregreat · 13/08/2026 13:57

I am the very first to be skeptical and critical of politicians and their double standards, but you can’t choose where your parents want to send you to school and the fees may have been from grand parents or loaned or a bursary. She may not have even wanted to go there or wasn’t even thinking of politics as a career! The irony isn’t lost on me though considering what the vat charges have done to a few private schools and the parents too.

I actually think it's even more despicable for MPs who benefitted from a private education paid by the state and/or other parents (yes, I'm looking at you Starmer) to try to destroy private schools.

Destroying what was given to them so generously.

Oh, sure. But it does rather blunt the left’s attacks on privately educated Tories.
