A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

You can’t squat down to those holes in the ground .
Its ridiculous. If you don’t like a traditional loo then go back to your own home to use your own one !
Normal toilets are fine to use

EasternStandard · 12/08/2026 20:58

justasking111 · 12/08/2026 20:40

I think Cambridge councillors should be on a rota to clean these toilets.

Ha

LieborCookin · 12/08/2026 20:54

But surely normal loos which can easily be used by everyone are the best ones ?
There is no way I can squat down to that thing ??

You won't have to? Just use the other options available.

I think there is a lot of unnecessary fuss being made about three squat loos. Agree with pp about a gift for Farage, though. Squat loos can be added to the boogerman list.

Also agree that thee are never enough women's loos.

@CountBinfaceForPM you can just use the women's loos okay? Sorted.

I don’t see why everyone can’t use the normal type.

I don't understand. The new loo block has ordinary loos (presumably men's and women's unless all are gender neutral?) and has squat loos. So assuming pp is a woman she can use the women's ordinary loo if she is in Cambridge? Or the gender neutral ordinary loos if that is the case.

Maybe everyone will and Cambridge will decide the squat loos are redundant and convert them to ordinary loos? It does seem like it is an experiment.

There's now three less usable toilets in that toilet block.

LieborCookin · 12/08/2026 21:34

Usually its the women's loo with more queue and use and if they are unisex that's worse

Whose paying for these experiments ?

NoWordForFluffy · 12/08/2026 21:34

I'm wondering what % of people using the loos would like a squat loo vs what % of the loos are squat loos. If 5% of users want one and 30% of loos are squat ones, then they're vastly over-provided. It feels like a very odd thing to do (though it sounds like something our council would do!).

I'm not sure my dodgy left meniscus would endure a squat loo. 😬

CountBinfaceForPM · 12/08/2026 21:43

Cambridge has a lot of Chinese tourists, so that is probably the reason for the squat loos.

I'm pretty sure that middle-class Chinese tourists can manage a normal toilet.

The Chinese travelling as tourists probably use western style anyway in various places such as

Western-style sit-down toilets are standard in modern hotels, upscale malls, and many private homes

Is that AI. AI also tells me:

Squat toilets are very common in China. They are the standard choice in most public restrooms, train stations, parks, tourist spots, and older buildings. Many local people prefer them because they avoid skin contact with seats and are believed to be cleaner and better for posture.

It is possible to squat over a normal one. I’m sure Chinese tourists can and are aware the U.K. has a western style of toilet.

In fact they are drawn to western culture hence paying to visit.

We’re not actually China so what they do there doesn’t have to be here.

But it can break the loo seat?

Various countries adapt their loo provision in tourist areas, so this is no different. I expect Cambridge will keep a track of how things pan out re: usage.

Break it? They don’t have to stand on it. Just hover.

People would use the normal ones no problem.

And how many of them are wealthy middle class tourists?
That aside, when in Rome...

RosieHosie · 13/08/2026 05:22

I thought hovering was bad for women as you don't completely empty your bladder.

That doesn't answer the % question. And, as others have said, why would that mean a) they aren't able to use western loos; and b) we install squat loos? Isn't it a bit patronising to think that those tourists aren't comfortable using a western loo?

I'd love to see the research behind the decision.

Councils seem to be full of people with no common sense and a love of wasting money on really terrible things. I don’t understand how they get away with it.

Yes, I live in Labour-run Sefton. They're experts at that!

ETA: it's nigh on the only thing they're expert at.

Morning 😁

Welcome back @EasternStandard. Hope you've had a lovely break.

Another case of Labour ideology meets reality. Are they actively trying to kill jobs for young people? It feels that way.
So glad Ange is back in govt (not). Can't wait for her next tranche of bright ideas. 🙄

An official impact statement for Angela Rayner’s signature employment reforms found they would have a negative impact on companies by forcing them to contend with new red tape, extra staffing costs and lost revenue.
The government analysis found that sectors such as hospitality and retail, which have already borne the brunt of increases in national insurance and the minimum wage, would be worst affected by the changes.
It also warned that the plans would make it harder for employers to respond to changes in demand, with potential knock-on impacts on revenue and investment.
