A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Why squat ones? Why not normal toilets as people have everywhere else ? It’s reading things like this that makes people’s blood boil when it doesn’t need to be like this

No idea. I rolled my eyes and stopped reading. They cost £1m to build iirc.

What are squat toilets. Really short ones that you hover over? 🤔

the80sweregreat · 12/08/2026 13:57

The squat ones are horrible. Saw a few in Italy once and it was a fat no from me for those ones

SapphireCasino · 12/08/2026 14:01

@Nuthatch26 the squat toilet thing really annoyed me this weekend

I actually think it’s quite racist. (I’m sure you’ll realise that’s not a word I use lightly ) They put signage up in Mandarin but I would bet money that any Chinese tourists who’ve decided to come and visit won’t want to use them either.

It’s actually just an incredibly lazy stereotyping of that particular group of people and it seems like it pertains to something that may be existed in the 1950s in some countries?

And of course it has resulted in people wondering if that’s actually who they’re really targeting…

I suppose it’s possible that men in general might like them?

SapphireCasino · 12/08/2026 14:02

And apparently they’re not properly marked so you could easily pay your money, go into what you think is a woman’s toilet and end up in a squat toilet.

I genuinely think that there’s a whole bunch of people who just see their jobs with the public as being paid trolling.

CaveMum · 12/08/2026 14:02

Well the PM has managed to piss off a lot of people at my end with his comments yesterday lumping betting shops in with vape shops and criminal enterprises on the high street. Never mind that betting shops are highly regulated, pay tons of tax, employ 1000s of people and provide a perfectly legal past-time for the general public.

He’s one of those holier than thou types who thinks people shouldn’t be allowed to decide how to spend their own money and cite gambling as being the root of all evil. No mention that pubs can also cause similar issues around addiction etc I noticed.

The facts are that there are far fewer betting shops then there have ever been (someone quoted the stat of 18,000 in 1980 compared to about 4,000 now) and research shows that despite the number of people gambling dropping, the rates of “problem gambling” remain the same, suggesting that it’s not the product that is at fault per se.

I should add that I am referring to betting shops - where you pop your £5 on the football or the gee gees - and not the slot machine centres which I agree are a blight and designed to take your money off you.

the80sweregreat · 12/08/2026 14:06

You’d think they wouid champion hospitality and want people spending more. They usually do

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 12/08/2026 14:11

I’d like to know how they’ll classify a ‘vape shop’. All the newsagents and local supermarkets round me sell vapes.

RosieHosie · 12/08/2026 13:56

They're usually flat base plates made of ceramic or stainless steel with hatched areas on either side for people to place their feet while they squat over an open hole do whatever they need to do. Not pleasant.

DancingFerret · 12/08/2026 14:26

I wonder if there's a reason Turkish barber shops haven't been included in the crackdown?

Yeah I thought the same about stereotyping. I'm not sure about men in general preferring them, I know my dh would rather hold it than use a squat toilet. Having used them abroad, they are awful, and always filthy. I pity the cleaners who have to maintain them.

Its just virtue signalling by those who need to polish their halos. They don't realise that they are the ones causing division.

Who knows? Tomorrow it will include Bubble tea and Pandora shops, the day after any wine bars that don't sell good northern pints.

It stikes me that Burnhams daily pointless policy announcement makes him sound more and more like count binface everyday. Maybe Friday he'll announce the 99 icecream price cap - that would be popular.

the80sweregreat · 12/08/2026 15:02

The 99p for 99p ice cream is a cracking idea.
I feel that AB should steal this one from the bin man.

DancingFerret · 12/08/2026 15:21

Useful DM article for once - check out the current asylum seekers by local council.

DancingFerret · 12/08/2026 15:21

Interesting, thanks. That colour map is very informative. Wales is looking very dark green considering they want to be a nation of sanctuary.

Laughing at Anna Turley. She claimed that the migrants at the military bases would be "contained", then in the next breath, had to admit that they would be free to come and go. 😂😂

The £1m was for new public loos including three squat toilets. Plus baby change and wheelchair accessible loos.

Why do you think they've installed squat toilets?

OP posts:
CountBinfaceForPM · 12/08/2026 16:23

Some of the Aire de Repos in France still have the old squat toilets. I went to a restaurant in Paris that had them too. This was a long time ago, though.

CountBinfaceForPM · 12/08/2026 16:27

Nuthatch26 · 12/08/2026 16:22

Why do you think they've installed squat toilets?

It says in the article:

Cambridge City Council said alongside standard facilities, "three squat-style flushing toilets, which are preferred by some international visitors, are available".

If they don't get used much, perhaps they will just convert them to sitting toilets.
