A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Agree….but why?

Cleaning up KB mess. IMO they're just adding oxygen to it. 🙄

Right? And she knows that too, so WTF is going on?

Anyway… having written her off completely… in other news, Ceuta are moving 1000 migrant “minors” to mainland Spain.

know the old joke “what’s the difference between a conspiracy theory and reality? About six months”. That window just got shortened considerably.

Maybe now they'll stop blaming the tourists for the shortage of accommodation.

Actiively swapping tourists for economic migrants. What could possibly go wrong!

This is such an impossible situation. These are children - from pictures, some quite young children rather than just men pretending. But they simply can't take them into Europe, or else many more thousands of children will be deliberately sent across alone and it will be a much worse humanitarian disaster.

Surely they must see that?

The reason for this invasion was the previous choices of the Spanish government: the amnesty of illegal immigrants, and the bizarre ruling about the sea border. And obviously longer term also the political choices in the rest of Europe, including Asylum and free movement.

Hundreds of millions of people want to move into Europe. In our connected world, they all learn every detail that could affect their ability to do so, and act on it. How could anyone imagine otherwise?!? Every single one of those would-be migrants is an intelligent, ingenious human being with the standard overriding human drive to improve their own life in any way they can. Do politicians and NGOs forget that? They seem to infantilize migrants and non-Europeans, and see them as victims rather than as autonomous, personally-motivated humans.

I sometimes imagine the future history lessons, and I fear that 'The invasion of Ceuta' will be cited as a significant event in some absolutely seismic changes to come.

SpaceRaccoon · 06/08/2026 08:16

It's sp obvious that the vast majority of these will have parents, not sending them back is perverse.

Endgames · 06/08/2026 08:17

with the wildfires and the Ceuta it’s been a bleak summer in that way!

@WildClover there’s a thread on Scotsnet with good uni open day info. I need a thread for corralling clueless dc into picking…I expect she’ll end up with working for a year until she figures it out. Better than rushing for the wrong thing.

Several of my family's young people have taken time out and worked before university - I'm a big fan of it for DC who aren't really sure what they want to do.

It does seem to give them thinking time, and they've been very happy and focused when they do start - rather than feeling rushed into potentially the wrong choice.

It seems to give them back a feeling of control - which is really important.

I'm a big fan of gap years. A levels are really stressful so it's a good thing to take time out before they move on to the next step. They're making huge decisions with very little time to stop and think.

I think that's where USA and other countries where young people start later in their career choice is a very good idea.

Endgames · 06/08/2026 09:07

I wish I had planned my career a bit better / I decided at a university open day after listening to a history lecture to go for history / IR,
so I know where she gets it from! But I rushed headlong and took the first grad scheme job that came up as my main goal by that point was to start earning. I wish I’d had a better look round and tried some things out.

plus I didn’t appreciate my degree enough which looking back, was fantastic as it simply felt like more school to me.

This is a result of climate change. No idea why we are all so shocked.

Me too - also because you're only young once, there will be no better time to get out there, enjoy life, and have some adventures.

Front page of The Times today. This just keeps getting worse. Rape gang perps will also be eligible for early release as some were convicted of indecent assault.
Article also has a good interview with Arlene Foster on the release of PC Harper’s killers. I've signed the petition.

Wes Streeting was bankrolled by a think tank linked to one of the world’s most notorious fraudsters, The Telegraph can disclose.
Mr Streeting, who is now the Defence Secretary, accepted £37,500 in donations from Labour for the Long Term (LLT) over 2022 and 2023 despite significant concerns among some senior figures in the party over the source of the funds.
Just one month before LLT made its first donation, its founder, David Lawrence, had accepted a £500,000 gift from Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced American cr£#tocurrency billionaire, who was subsequently sentenced to 25 years in jail for fraud after stealing billions of dollars from his customers.

Isn't it weird that they were grooming gangs leaders but their offence wasnt updated with the new legal term so they get let out early ?

How perverse?? Just re classify their crimes and don't let them out !

strawberrybubblegum · 06/08/2026 21:25

lRemoved because I just checked, and although Lucy Connolly was sentenced for 3 years, she only spent 10 months in jail.

I still find those sentences grossly unbalanced.

redange · 06/08/2026 21:48

I know he is a very dislikeable person and deserved to be sentenced to some time in prison. However, when 'Kop Killers' are being released how can you keep Alex Bellfield in Prison for effectively communicating abuse at people not physical abuse ! It appears that he is a Political Prisoner, like Lucy - Connelly, for whatever reason certain people are deemed a nuisance to the Government.
