A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

If Joshua Bonehill- Payne even turned up at a local Reform Party meeting the papers, media and no doubt many on here would go absolutely wild ! A very strange decision from everybody in the Conservative Party from down from the local party up to the very top. Even if Joshua Bonehill Payne is a rehabilitated person, surely his past views put him totally outside the remit of all mainstream politics. He, is though an exceptional you tube content maker.

Going back to the video I posted about the introduction of compulsory Schooling to sixteen in 1974, it is interesting to understand to consider how few people had academic qualifications. Thus, A Levels in 1974 probably carried more academic agency than a non Russel Group University Degree today ! Finally, my mother was a deputy head at a Girls Grammar throughout the 80's and early 90s, does not accept that you had to be exceptional to go to University pre 1974 ! She also 'disputed' the actual tiny numbers of students who went to University until I proved my point. I guess that again is due to my mothers academic bubble which she inhabited, thus never really crossed her mind how Higher Education pre even 97 was Elite !

I went to a girl’s Grammar between 1969 and 1976, finishing after A levels, choosing to become a hotel manager, studying on a sandwich course at college. We were told aged 11 that we were the top 20% of educational achievement and that we were there to pass the maximum number of O levels and most of us passed at least 8. Few left at 16 and the rest of us went onto achieve 3 or 4 A levels - all in the days when a pass meant something. Other than the fact I’ve never been asked since entering college to prove any of my qualifications (or those gained thereafter) WHAT WENT WRONG!!!

Scrolling X and getting angry all over again at Burnham's decision to release Andrew Harper's killers. But hey, a "sorry" from Justice Secretary Alex Norris, I'm sure that will be of great comfort to his bereaved loved ones.

Same. I heard the victims minsiter on the radio, she basically said there's nothing they can do so suck it up.
I listened to the Daily T this morning. They interview the chair of Thames Valley Police Federation. She explains the impact of this decision so well, worth a listen.
She also said that the govt saying 'its all fine, they'll be tagged' is rubbish. If they do something wrong when wearing a tag, they won't be sent back to prison as there won't be a space for them. Just extra pressure on police, probation service etc.

We are sorely, sorely in need of new prisons. That, and their staffing, is something I'd be genuinely overjoyed to pay taxes for.

Its not whether Kemi Badenoch personally endorsed Joshua Bonehill-Payne it is the effect he will have on the perception of the Conservative Party. Joshua Bonehill- Payne , would even without his dreadful past, be an inappropriate holder of any official Conservative position given that his You-Tube content is hugely Anti-Government/Labour meaning he will always be a full on target of the left. In essence Mr Bonehill- Payne would be persecuted for doing 23MPH in a 20 MPH Zone by anyone on the political left. Therefore, why would any one associating with the Conservative Party even at 'Parish' level choose such an openly targetable individual.

He has seen sense and is standing down as a candidate. I am relieved about this as I have been racking my brains all day to figure out what on earth Kemi was thinking!

From his Facebook page:

"The last 24 hours have shown that a lot of people do not understand how terrible I feel about the things I did when I was much younger.
I know that my previous actions continue to cause pain in the Jewish community. I had thought that getting involved in my local council and working hard for my community was a good way to show how much I have changed and that I want to give something back.
I realise now that the fight against antisemitism is something that I actually need to do more of, I need to show the Jewish community how much I regret my previous actions and how hard I will work to fight to help destroy anti-semitism and rebuild trust.
I was 21 when antisemitism became my whole way of seeing the world. Because of my abhorrent behaviour I was convicted, imprisoned and deservedly punished. Since leaving prison, I have now spent years fighting antisemitism and extremism.
Rehabilitation does not erase what I did. But it does give me a sense of duty. While I cannot change my past, I can warn others away from the same destructive path. I know how this ideology works because I lived inside it.
I also know that if I stand as a council candidate, other political parties will spend all their time focusing on my past rather than the work I'm doing today, or even fighting antisemitism in their own midst.
Rather than standing as a local council candidate, I believe that my experience is better used supporting Kemi Badenoch in her ongoing mission to combat the antisemitism and extremism that is dividing our nation.
I have therefore informed the Party of my decision to withdraw from next year’s council election and Kemi has instead offered that I become an adviser to the Conservative Party’s Culture and Integration Commission, specifically focusing on how young men become radicalised.
I am of course sad that Jewish community groups have refused to meet me. My offer to talk still remains. I am on their side, and I am actively trying to help people susceptible to radicalisation and Jew hatred from heading down that path.
I love the Conservative Party. I believe in its values, and I believe that Kemi Badenoch is someone who believes in principles, believes in redemption and will stick her to do the right thing. I support the work the Party is doing to rebuild trust with the British people, and I intend on making a meaningful contribution to tackling extremism and promoting social cohesion."

I have a cousin whose career has been in the prison service. It's absolutely fooked. No money for the old buildings, which are in a bad way. Recruitment a joke quality wise in Wales because of the lack of applicants because of pay and conditions.

Pity we can't find an empty continent to dump the world's dross in I often think.

Same. Justice seems to be the first port of call when governments look to save money.
Labour claim they have delivered 3200 new prison places, but they won't say how many have closed so we don't have the net figure. I hope things improve.

I'm glad that JB-P has stood down, but I don't feel any better after reading that statement. Its all about him. He clearly enjoys the limelight. Kemi should never have come out to bat for him.

Meanwhile in Lord Khant’s ‘safe’ London, several people stabbed today in broad daylight in Convent Garden - perp is a very burly looking woman.

Definitely not firing on all cylinders.

SpaceRaccoon · 05/08/2026 17:58

I want to believe him. I like a redemption arc. I kind of feel someone who is mortified at their past behaviour would want to keep their head down though?

Definitely not firing on all cylinders.

He's firing on all cylinders, no problem

He's now got himself a lovely job with the Tories. And as somebody on the thread that @Nuthatch26 linked to said, he's got the attention he wanted as well.

Btw does anyone know what kind of data councillors have access to?

And Kemi has phrased him standing down as if it's something to be sorry about.

There are dark forces at play, gentlemen. (on the off chance anyone is a fan of the TV show Whitechapel).

Even if he's telling the truth, and it's amazing how many people on X believe him, I think it's totally fair for those kinds of criminal convictions to mean you are barred for life from certain roles.

And there is absolutely no excuse for what KB has done.

Yes I agree. His behaviour is off. Not what I would expect from someone showing genuine remorse. Actions, not words over a long period would be more appropriate.

I've been scratching my head on Kemi's stance all day. All I can think of is that she totally believes him, and thinks his past could genuinely help in the fight against anti semitism? I don't know what else could explain her decision after all the work she's done on anti semitism.

Claire Countinho now saying that he should be forgiven

That song Posh Spice did years ago "you're out of your mind" keeps going around in my head

Of all the people to come out and support this decision, the person in that job just seems mad.

It's been like a whole day of mad from the Tory Party.
