A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Just had my hair cut . My hairdresser was really annoyed at apprenticeships being pushed as an option to university, mainly as the graft required will put many off in the early stages. Her partner is an electrician who’d expect a high pass in maths and good grades in at least five other subjects before looking at anyone. It’s not an easy option at all.

So true. I don't know why some people think that dc can go into a trade without maths. It's essential.
Perhaps some still see the trades as inferior and assume they're all a bit thick?

Andy Burnham is facing a backlash from Labour MPs over allowing domestic abusers to be released from prison early.
Rapists and serious child sexual offenders, including grooming gang perpetrators, will no longer be eligible for the early release scheme after an urgent review of the plans.
But those given custodial sentences for domestic abuse, and criminals guilty of manslaughter, will remain eligible to be freed halfway through their sentence.
The decision not to exclude domestic abusers from the scheme, which is designed to ease prison overcrowding, has prompted criticism from female backbenchers.

Totally agree! Just had extensive work done on my house and the builder and tradesmen are seriously intelligent people!

@WildClover my dd can’t choose at all. She’s looking at medicine, economics, languages, law,
history politics and international relations.

basically, we’ll end up tearing our last remaining hairs out at this rate!

Gosh that's quite a list!

Some of you will remember that I posted here that I was very unhappy about Crewkerne Gazette founder - many of us were a bit suspicious because some of the videos are really odd.

Anyway, the man behind them has now been selected to stand as a Tory party candidate for Somerset Council.(Joshua Bonehill Paine)

Kemi Badenoch has defended the selection and clearly he is a big fan of hers.

I think it’s dreadful. He has a long prison record for some really awful things. I think it’s hugely ironic that she’s calling them the party of law and order and letting him stand as a candidate. I don’t think it’s too much to ask that candidates don’t have criminal convictions.

Understandably, the MP that he targeted is very upset. Even if KB actually believes what she is saying about rehabilitation and so on, she must see that it’s a dreadful PR move.

Good thing I didn’t put too much faith in her! They’re always disappointing in the end.

SapphireCasino · 04/08/2026 23:18

I don’t generally look at news during the day or I try to avoid it - not sure when this came out

I was supposed to have an early night, but now I’m just really annoyed! I really wish I hadn’t found out till tomorrow! I lived in Golders Green when he carried out some of his awful activities. This is going to be a PR disaster and frankly I think she deserves it. I really wonder what her colleagues thought about it.

I mean, has she been on the glue or something?! WTAF.

edit @justasking111 sensible of you to put up a link when I just spluttered incoherently😂

You are right Dancing Ferret correct speaking English was transformed in to accepting dialects and phonetics.

This video is sadly as true today as it was in 1974 a large number of children wasting time in education. The very sad thing being today that many children with similar backgrounds to those show 1974 have been sold University. This of course being as much use to some students as staying an extra year was in 1974 !

Very interesting video. Thank you.

I think it was Tony Blair with his mantra "education, education, education" who decreed 50 percent of school leavers should go on to "uni" - completely ignoring the fact there are many forms of education and at the time, a wide range of providers capable of delivering it via technical colleges, accredited apprenticeships and the armed forces.

AFAIK, not one student at that time left further education saddled with a millstone debt.

(Did anyone ask Blair how he expected 50 percent of school leavers to suddenly achieve the academic ability of the 3-5 percent previously considered as university material? IMO, the only possible way to achieve his vision was to lower admission standards.)

OH 😱

Labour is going to have a field day with this. What is Kemi thinking?!!

SapphireCasino · 04/08/2026 23:46

All the parties will have a field day

Ironically, I think it’s actually damaging to the right as a whole but of course they will have to spin it directly against the Tories.

As I said - WTAF!!!

I’m seeing articles on this came out 14 hours ago. I would’ve thought a crazy decision like this would be reversed within 14 hours!

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 05/08/2026 01:18

Yes, appalling decision. I find it very strange indeed. What on earth is Badenoch thinking?

It's fundamentally against Labour ideology to recognise that some people are capable of more than others.

Or rather, at the same time:

a) people who they want to give money to are completely and permanently personally incapable of doing more than they say they can/ want to

b) people who they want to take money from are no more personally capable than anyone else, and have stolen their opportunities from everyone else through 'privilege' (and could be instantly replaced by other workers with no loss of UK productivity if they decide to work less / move abroad)

Schrodinger's Labour's human capability theory.

"Ex neo-Nazi Joshua Bonehill-Paine selected as Tory candidate - BBC News" https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c70g9rw58q2o

OH 😱

This seems like a really big misjudgement by Kemi.

People do sometimes change - and he does seem to be trying to make up for his past - but in our polarised current political culture, with so much intolerance (especially on the Left, admittedly) no party should be seen to condone or accept any kind of violence.

I was likewise utterly shocked that Shahid Butt was permitted to stand as a Councillor (as an independent) despite his conviction for terror offences. More so since despite renouncing it, he still seemed to hold violence-adjacent views, eg about Israeli Maccabi fans. Thankfully he got few votes - but I don't think he should have been permitted to stand.

I do also feel disgust at the usual financial and sex- related revelations we've come to expect from MPs of all parties. In particular I judge Louise Haigh's fraud over her phone harshly as showing lack of personal integrity. And I also feel the same about Angela Rayner underpaying stamp duty.

But violent crimes - or inciting violence - especially related to only certain groups of people, or against people with specific political beliefs - are different. That's a line we must hold.

strawberrybubblegum · 05/08/2026 06:46

Just to note - he's standing as a Councillor not an MP.

But it is with Conservative endorsement.

Kemi has very robustly defended his selection.

Loopylalalou · 05/08/2026 08:39

Part of me thinks that at least we know up front that this one and his history. I’d worry more about those we know nothing about particularly the brown envelope type.

Nuthatch26 · 05/08/2026 08:40

Agree with you all, it's terrible decision. I'm disappointed that Kemi has doubled down. I couldn't vote for him, and I'm definitely a tory.

Thats the thing though, all parties get caught out with poor vetting of candidates. But in this case, his history is well known. Why damage the party brand like this?
I respect that he's turning his life around and trying to do good, but you can't just erase a past like his. At least not this soon.

It’s also terrible because Badenoch made such a strong stand with British Jews - entirely genuinely and passionately in my judgement.

And it really doesn’t help when pointing to the obnoxious antisemitism that infests so much of the Greens and Labour - in Labour’s case still infests - a problem the Tories have never suffered from on anything like that scale.
