A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@redange oh hello
I thought you had name changed

Yet more proof that I have really no idea who I'm talking to now! Confused

I really hate how down we are on achievement as a whole in this country. And it's been going on for so long now I don't know if it can be corrected.

I'm pleased that Donald Trump has finally used the word bankrupt about the UK - all that anyone has used the word - though it won't help with people who just think it's a right wing conspiracy theory.

I've been doing various bits of economic research and much as I get annoyed when people say that Britain is a lazy country, I've got to stop getting annoyed haven't I? Because I'm actually starting to see what they mean.

Meanwhile, even people on here who were quite sensible seem to have gone a bit mad and think that taxing billionaires solves all the problems we have.

I don't know if it's the heat, but I've seen an awful lot of crazy on here the last couple of days and I haven't even been on that much

It's been the most batshit weekend I can recall across the spectrum. The threads have gone to pot.

SapphireCasino · 03/08/2026 23:00

@justasking111 oh that's interesting that you think so too

They can't all be bots because I recognise quite a few names

Anyway, if I may share this here.... I was rejigging my CV and I found myself wondering about a particularly obnoxious senior manager from a long time ago. I knew he'd gone to work for some pointless quango.... turns out in the intervening time, he's done that thing of working for a few different ones, causing damage and yet somehow getting a better job at the end of all of it

I mean, fair play he's obviously more intelligent than I am because he knows how to make more money. But the things I have found people saying about him - and on the record too

Sadly it seems he moved north and has the ear of Andy Burnham. That doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

In fact, following his career, there's a very clear trajectory of creating what I would consider to be havoc -inflating the number of jobs and salaries to be paid by the public as he goes.

he was never a private sector guy. It's like they consider a legitimate job in itself - going around and creating bureaucracy, then claiming you need to hire more people to support the bureaucracy.... obviously it won't wash in the private sector, but I think it's been going on in the public sector for decades.

he's found his niche anyway - just hope we don't see him coming on board as a policy advisor or something. Near retirement age but that sort never retire.

Chat has a Trump thread, a Burnham thread and this thread (and probably more). Have you been to police those other threads as well?

Hell, you could visit every thread on MN and tell them which board you think it should be on. 🚨 👮

I wasn’t sure whether MsAmerica was commending this thread and suggesting a specialist niche for it, or deploring it and arguing for a more restricted audience, or doing some self-appointed site admin.

The last seems most likely, I guess.

I went through the same thought process and landed on the latter!

@LieborCookin we know so much about differentiating school settings, it’s frustrating that we’re still going backwards. We agree 16/18 pathways need to be broader, the same is true all the way through from early intervention onwards.

Endgames · 04/08/2026 07:28

I see BoE reckons economy is significantly weakening - 70 percent of my tech network is job hunting very few jobs at the moment and summer is typically high season…

@SapphireCasino that’s a play straight out of yes minister - the civil service higher ups are always rewarded for protecting jobs, private incentives are more diverse.

SapphireCasino · 04/08/2026 08:35

@Endgames yeah that's what I've heard. My closest friend really likes that show. Honestly, I don't think I could watch it - it would be too painful.

But seriously, how long can that go on? And why do humans allow it to go on? And how can everybody be looking at someone who they know isn't bringing anything good to the table - and they just think the way to get rid of them to put them in a better position? I'm sure this has been going on in government for decades. But why would people perpetuate it?

If it's the equivalent of old boys working in government, I get it to some extent but even then - at some point we all need for things to actually work? And our public services clearly don't?

SapphireCasino · 04/08/2026 08:36

@Endgames sorry for all the question marks 😂 I'm like a little kid that keeps saying "but whyyyyy" but I do think that's fair in this case.

Endgames · 04/08/2026 08:38

Always my favourite question too! I can only say although it’s prevalent on public sector side I’ve worked in private and quasi private places where mgrs have had the same ‘the more people I manage the more successful I am’ attitude!

redange · 04/08/2026 10:11

It is ironic that today we probably need more diversification in education, I.E more separation based on aptitude and abilities, yet what we get is the complete opposite . If ever there was a time to double the number of pupils in selective state education in the last sixty years, the time is now.

However, we have the complete opposite approach from socialists like Lucy Powell who care not a jot about the future prospects for the UK but their own warped ideology. It has never been more evident that the very least we could do to improve education is to ensure the brightest get the bulk of educational 'resources'. This, is the only hope the country has going forward, yet we still have Socialists forwarding Comprehensive Education a failed concept from the 50s & 60s Socialists never come up with anything new or different other than destroy excellence or wealth.

The only form of Comprehensive that works is in the form of 'Car Insurance' . It certainly does not work in the form of education nor is it the appropriate way forward for educating those in solving Britain's woes.

Edited

I can hand on heart say that in 30 plus years in the civil service, I was never truly awed by senior or very senior managing staff. Their skill seemed to lay in applying for everything, being prepared to move in a month, and smarming up to the big boys. I saw one appear in a public enquiry recently, what a fool.

Morning all 😁

Just back from a lovely break in the Yorkshire Dales. Needed to recharge my batteries so booked a last minute thing for a long weekend.

@SapphireCasino Sounds like your ex manager has made a career of failing uphill. I think we've all met that type at some point. Do let us know if his name pops up around the new govt. I wouldn't be surprised with this lot.

@Endgames Sorry to hear that work is so slow. I hope things improve, but it's worrying if its supposed to be a busy period for you. Not great in my industry still, with no signs of improvement on the horizon. I worry for our dc who haven't yet launched.

Its so hard for them with a shrinking jobs market and AI knocking at the door.
We've done some uni visits this year too. My dc knows exactly what field they want to work in, so its a bit easier for us this time. Good luck finding the right path for your dc.

@Nuthatch26 @Endgames. I have ben looking at Unis too this summer. Do you mind me asking what your dc's are looking at. My dd is looking at biochemistry or biomedical sciences...but it's so hard to advise...I have no science background!

DancingFerret · 04/08/2026 12:05

@redange Wasn't it also in the 60s and 70s that so-called progressives decreed the focus on good English should be abandoned as it was a barrier to pupils being able to express themselves and demonstrate their creativity?

DancingFerret · 04/08/2026 12:09

@Nuthatch26 Your break sounds lovely. We were really taken with the parts of Yorkshire we visited last month.

We were near Malham Cove, one of my favourite spots. 😊
I forgot to pack my best walking socks though, so now feel like I'm walking on hot coals. 😂

You are right Dancing Ferret correct speaking English was transformed in to accepting dialects and phonetics.

This video is sadly as true today as it was in 1974 a large number of children wasting time in education. The very sad thing being today that many children with similar backgrounds to those show 1974 have been sold University. This of course being as much use to some students as staying an extra year was in 1974 !

Today there are children with similar backgrounds to those shown in 1974 who were misled into University Education and in almost parallel circumstances albeit ,at 22 rather than 16 !

Endgames · 04/08/2026 12:29

@WildClover my dd can’t choose at all. She’s looking at medicine, economics, languages, law,
history politics and international relations.

basically, we’ll end up tearing our last remaining hairs out at this rate!

Loopylalalou · 04/08/2026 14:50

Just had my hair cut . My hairdresser was really annoyed at apprenticeships being pushed as an option to university, mainly as the graft required will put many off in the early stages. Her partner is an electrician who’d expect a high pass in maths and good grades in at least five other subjects before looking at anyone. It’s not an easy option at all.
