So I went and ordered a frappe today

No idea what it was. I wanted an iced latte but Mcdonalds said they didnt do them any more. I was thirsty and hot and had a long drive and needed something quick

So I see this thing called a frappe. I think well that sounds like a latte and it looks summery.

I say to her 'whats a frappe' and she says 'yeah, what is a frappe?' She then goes quiet for a bit and says its a mixture between a slushie and a milkshake, sort of.

I think well that sounds about right

Then this thing arrives, tasteless, far too cold and gave me a headache.

I wont order another one. For some reason I really thought it was similar to an iced coffee.

But now I know.

Every day is a learning day.

So a minute ago I just learned what a frappe is from a stranger on mumsnet

So Thankyou ☺️

they have been around far too long now for me to just not know what they are. But I didn’t . Until now

Well there you are. You're actually only a few hours after me to be honest. I had mine (and my learning experience) around 3pm. It was actually my 2nd drink of the whole day and Id been up since 6am so you can see how desperation got me.

So what actually is it? I always thought it was cold coffee with cream on top.

I thought I was going to look really thick starting this thread!!

Thats exactly what I thought it was!!

And in my head frappe sounded coffee like.

Frappe, latte. Frappe, latte.

Interchangeable.

Except they're not.

I’ve only recently become a coffee drinker, and only fancy seasonal lattes. I’m trying to learn all the different coffees now

IHate · 28/07/2026 21:26

Complete segue, but the idea of getting coffee because I’m thirsty is completely alien to me. When I’m thirsty, I drink water. When I have a non water drink, it’s because I quite fancied a Coke/tea/coffee/wine.

This was your second drink of the day? You’ve had no water all day?!

Butterflystar76 · 28/07/2026 21:26

I did exactly the same earlier in the week… didn’t expect it to come with whipped cream and caramel sauce….. at 9am 🤣

I also thought this, I’m pretty sure that’s what they are in Starbucks! Especially the chocolate and caramel ones…

Is that strange? I probably drink a pint of water maximum during the day (no other drinks)

Persephonia1966 · 28/07/2026 21:29

I like the fact you gave the server a mild existential crisis.

I always thought they would be like ice coffee as well. Which is weird because I had a Greek friend and he would talk at length about how a Greek person invented Frappes and I thought at the time I knew what they were, but clearly not.

sweetpotatowedgeswithmayo · 28/07/2026 21:29

Is there any coffee in them at all? Or is it like a milkshake? I’ve never had one either

I work in front line services. Unfortunately no time at all to drink or wee

And I was going to stop off for a nice cup of tea but driving I like something I can drink while not risking scalding. I dont like water

So I was either going for tea, coffee or an iced latte because I have been liking these recently. I dont actually like any cold drinks at all. Except for the odd iced latte, very rarely. LIke today

I dont drink fizzy drinks of any description.

Yes Im sort of glad she had to ask herself what it was, made me feel less stupid!!!

Makes me wonder who is buying all these frappes!!!

Do you not drink any water at all, then?

This is a very interesting thread.

I found out that bubble tea is served cold. I didnt expect that.

No, I drink hot drinks. All day long usually

I probably get through around 7-10 cups of tea a day.

Not today though

I make my own throughout summer.
I use 3 teaspoons of good quality instant coffee, 1 heaped spoon of brown sugar, a very generous glug of full fat milk
Whisk with a milk whisk until it has a meringue consistency.

Add 3 large ice cubes, topup with chilled water, stir and serve in a large glass - I prefer a mug-with a straw. 😋

StylesSluttyShorts · 28/07/2026 22:42

I've just read all this thread and I still don't know what one is.
I don't know what acai is either.

Changeisstillpossible · 28/07/2026 22:45

I had an iced coffee from a cafe recently. It was not nice. At all. Nothing like iced coffee I'd make at home.

A frappe sounds even worse!

Thanks for the warning.

Mclaren10 · 28/07/2026 22:48

If they ask if you want a syrup in it...say yes or else it's a bit horrible.

Ask me how I know 👀

Oliwiaa · 28/07/2026 22:52

I first had a frappe about 20 years ago in Greece and it was definitely an iced coffee, though possibly made with nescafe and evaporated milk 😂and shaken/whipped.

Oliwiaa · 28/07/2026 22:54

Macdonalds ones seem to be described as 'A hint of delicious coffee is blended with ice, then topped with cream and our smooth caramel sauce.' And some are pink.
So maybe more of a milkshake?

EdinaTheConfessor · 28/07/2026 23:04

OP you must try the frappe latte from Cafe Nero if you have one near by. It is basically a thick iced coffee. Definitely coffee as I watched them make the double espresso to go in mine this morning.

I’ve always fancied trying one of the fancy flavoured ones from there or elsewhere but have been scared that they would not be coffee, just basically a milkshake and it seems from this thread that I was right.
