Can I ask my opposite neighbours to remove their reflective window film?

any time there is sunlight it just reflects directly into our house and somehow always directly into my eyes :(

would I be wrong to let them know and ask if they can find a different solution? I’ve never spoken to them

I’ve just had some window film fitted (instead of net curtains for privacy) and the outside looks just like a normal window except you can hardly see in beyond the window sill. So yes you could tell them there an alternative film but it could be down to expense. If you had the same film as them the sun would be shooting back and forth and God knows what would happen🤔!!!

I thought OP was talking about the mirror reflective stuff?

There's lots of privacy window coverings, but they aren't all mirrored.

Definitely because I’ve just had some fitted and it doesn’t have a mirror finish on the outside.

Surely if you put reflective screening on your window the only people it could affect would be those opposite, who already have it so it shouldn’t make a difference or affect them?!?!

Thegirlwhowent · 27/07/2026 23:51

You can always ask nicely. They probably aren't even aware that it causes problems and might be embarrassed to have inconvenienced you. On the other hand, they're not obliged to change it but you won't know how they'll react unless you tell them.

It’s perfectly respectable for the OP to have an issue with this. I’d change it if I knew there was a problem.

I agree. But issues are not solved by moaning to people who can do nothing about it.

fiorentina · 28/07/2026 13:05

I’d definitely ask. If my neighbour said something I was doing was causing them issues, within reason of course, I’d try and alter it.

Equally if that’s not possible, I’d find a solution to mitigate it myself. Some appropriate film for your own windows?

In a previous work life a new office was built opposite ours and caused similar issues with light in the summer. It was really frustrating, for a few months of a year we had to stick things to the window, but as the sun moved with seasons it was fine.

Surely that will create some sort of reflective black hole and half the street will be sucked in!
Problem solved!

BCBird · 28/07/2026 13:30

They may not be aware that this is causing an issue for u. Asking them to remove it is not the answer. I would speak to them and see if there is something thry can do to reduce the effects. If not I think i would ask where they purchased it and buy some myself

Absolutely no way, why should I pay not to be blinded in my own home?

Well I guess the alternative is to be blinded in your own house.

morselover69 · 28/07/2026 19:24

put the same thing on your windows, then he will get it back, problem solved

ConstantlyFuriosa · 29/07/2026 06:04

The OP has a portable air con unit. I’d say the neighbours opposite probably do not given they’ve put up window film. For all those saying they should just take it down: how hot is it where you live? Some flats are bloody unbearable especially this disgusting summer and they’re trying to cool their space. There’s a big difference between a minor inconvenience when you can’t see the telly for ten minutes and a boiling hot room all day.

Plus, you know, OP’s got air con, ffs!

Can’t believe some of the comments telling the OP to install blinds, plant trees or rearrange their furniture, as though the burden should be on them. The simplest and most reasonable solution is for the neighbours to find a less intrusive alternative. I’d feel awful if I knew I was causing a complete stranger that level of discomfort.

Yes I would do to if it was upsetting my neighbours but not everyone is the same. Also if it cost the neighbours a lot of money to have it installed they won’t want to just rip it out and waste all that money. But ultimately if the window treatment isn’t against any planning restrictions or other regulations they are entitled to do it no matter how annoying it is for neighbours. The title is it it unreasonable to ask and everyone is “no not unreasonable to ask but the neighbours may not take it down”. It seems the OP hasn’t even spoken to the neighbours about it.
