Can I ask my opposite neighbours to remove their reflective window film?

any time there is sunlight it just reflects directly into our house and somehow always directly into my eyes :(

would I be wrong to let them know and ask if they can find a different solution? I’ve never spoken to them

YABU. The sun is only ever in one position at a time so there's only a very limited number of place/direction of sight combinations that would actually lead to the sun reflecting into your eyes - if you take a step to the left or right, hey presto the sun is no longer in your eyes. They have every right to reflect the sunlight away from their home to stop it from getting so hot indoors and it would be ridiculous for them to take it down for your benefit.

Why not plant a shrub in front of your house to provide some screening?

We can, but it's outside your control whether other people will also choose to do that. So it's not very sensible to waste energy on minor issues you can just fix for yourself.

Being considerate to others is not being a 'mug'.Thank God most people are not so entitled, and they can see the problems they are causing others if they are pointed out politely.

Yes, which is why I originally said: If it's only a small beam, I'd probably just put something on my own window to block that spot, plus tell them what the impact is in case they choose to fix it.

I would definitely ask them. And take some photos showing the problem so they see it for themselves.

But first see if you can think of suggestions for how they can fix it without taking the film down. For example I wonder if it would work if they rub some soap on the outside of the window, or something else that “dulls” the mirror. That might stop it concentrating the light enough to solve your problem.

Basically if you can make it easy for them they are more likely to do it..:

I did hear about mirror film causing an opposite neighbour’s plastic rainwater pipes to melt - not cheap to replace. And it definitely can cause fires too. So maybe emphasise these risks not just the annoyance factor.

You need horizontal slat blinds. They can be angled so light coming in like this reflects up toward the ceiling. I have these in my lounge and it stops us being blinded by the sun all morning

ive got this on my front and back windows. It drops the temp by about 8 degrees. We are east/west facing. It’s only really an issue in super bright heatwave weather I suspect. I wouldn’t remove it.

Cant you put something like a decent sized vase just in the right spot on the windowsill to stop the dazzle just in thr spot you are sitting on the sofa?

These threads are ridiculous someone pays to have reflective screen and they are a sociopath if they won’t remove it because it upsets/ affects a neighbour but people who come on here to complain about children screaming and disturbing their peace are told to suck it up because that’s what happens when you have neighbours . Make your minds up , you can’t have it all ways .
