It’s kind of understandable that he got so complacent, he was Teflon coated for so long. All those QT appearances out of all proportion to his political importance, all the coverage when no difficult questions were asked, all the lack of challenge about his infrequent Commons attendance and non existent constituency surgeries. Former Tory cabinet ministers joining him. He thought he was invincible.

I suspect the Tories joining him - especially after his "ultimatum" (Yes, I remember) have attracted some media attention too. These are "big beasts" so will be reported on. In their new habitat.

Or they got high on their own supply regarding the level of corruption/slow decay of UK institutions "Everyone's at it". The UK has problems, but there are still journalists who will investigate this sort of stuff and plenty of public (including in the police even) who don't like outright illegal corruption. I think people who are very soaked in dodgy dealings tend to have a very negative view of the world/others and that this gets reinforced the more they get away with stuff. And therefore some become more blatant and eventually get caught. Cottrell wrote a whole book about laundering money, there's a central theme of "look what we are getting away with" from people like that

Also don't think he counted on the Guardian/Times 'sources' leaking information and how tenacious the journalists have been - note that all his threats to sue have come to nothing

It's been an ongoing investigation since 2017.

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

This will please you @Piggywaspushed. Hope it’s true.

🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham is set to allow Diane Abbott back into Labour

I wonder who is paying Channel 4 ?

I’ve always maintained they should call the streaming service 4player 🤷‍♀️

More to Richard Rich: "Every man has his price."

I’m pleased too. I’ve disagreed with Diane Abbot on a lot of things, but I’ve always admired her for sticking to her guns.

cardibach · 30/07/2026 19:39

Yes, it’s good news. She gets terrible abuse and called stupid but she’s an inspirational figure for what she has achieved educationally and politically

BIossomtoes · 30/07/2026 19:40

And she’s Mother of the House.

Efacsen · 30/07/2026 19:50

Also pleased about Diane Abbott

DuncinToffee · 30/07/2026 20:32

I am disappointed he didn't mention the 'totting up her coats" part.

I was reading a thread with lots of comment on that 😅

It’s really good to see them imploding as a political party. Hopefully this is it for them.

Indeed. If you're going to introduce a dystopian future, men (obviously the official is male and a dark figure knocking on the door), riffling through your just dead mother's (always a frail elderly woman) wardrobe is just bizarre.

BIossomtoes · 30/07/2026 20:55

Every time I think I couldn’t love John Crace any more …

I expected - well tbh hoped - they would ‘die’ before 2029, but this is quite sudden and glorious!

The journos will have so much more to gift us I think - saved up for years - and I’m definitely here for it.

There is, to my mind, no party without Farage, but I’m still pondering ‘why now?’

Also wondering if our Nige will consider it worth it to retake the MP for Clacton post and continue - he usually scuttles away from non productive to Nige grifts and makes other plans to line his pockets.

Jenrick has an absolute talent for getting everything he does very badly wrong - his actions are generally bizarre or stupid. I guess he’s not actually stupid in the traditional sense but something definitely malfunctions in his head!

My main surprise is that he has done so well really in politics- he’s so bad I’m surprised he got to ever stand as an MP.

I can't imagine for a moment that Farage would have wanted to trade his current money for old rope 'work' for the difficult and responsible role of leading the country. The man is a disrupter and show pony who has found people willing to pay him handsomely for it, and other people willing to stoke his ego for it.
Should he ever actually be elected to govern, his life would change considerably for the worse, and I'd have given him months at most before he stepped down.

Possibly
But to continue to receive the old rope money he needs to look like a viable contender for PM and therefore as if he wants the job. Which is a challenging balancing act to maintain.

Persephonia1966 · 31/07/2026 07:53

And if he was elected he would need to enrich himself as much as possible before stepping down/being voted out since the old rope money would no longer be available afterwards.

Provided he replaced himself with one of his puppets, he could continue to 'influence policy', so could remain for hire.

Agree - someone like Tice to be PM and do the donkey work whilst Farage remained the showboating leader of the party - shame that Tice is also deeply involved in the financial 'irregularities'

So someone else??
