I'll kick off with:

"What temperature should I wash my sheets and towels at?"

He'd been there 9 months.

They used a landline.

No student digs I or any of my friends ever lived in had a landline. You had to go out to a phone box to make a call.

Same. Queued for a pay phone in the Hall of Residence (1st year), in the student union, or on the street. Often in the pissing rain. ☔️

@BeUmberMember can you imagine trying to eat grilled rice 🤣🤣🤣glad you was able to halt that culinary delight.

Lentilcakes · 22/07/2026 18:27

My DS id home now - he was back a couple of weeks and I suggested he put his sheets in the wash.
He looked sheepish and I said ‘how often did you wash your bedding at uni?’
He replied ‘you don’t want to know’ Yup, I really don’t!
Considering he’s a brainbox he’s got no common sense and he can never find his keys, thought he’d lost his baseball hat twice, and left a jacket on the train! He has only been back 4 weeks 🤦‍♀️

My halls of residence had a landline. We had to top it up with phone cards and it cost 1p a minute to make a call. Then when we moved into a shared house we had a normal landline. We used to go through the bill with a highlighter when it arrived to see how much everyone owed.
Anyone would think some people have different experiences to others!

I had similar in a shared house, highlighter and all. I had forgotten about it until I read this post. Then I remembered the frustration of needing to call your mum to ask an inane question about how to boil a kettle or something, but being unable to because a flatmate had been hogging the phone for an hour speaking to some bloke she met down the pub.
In my first year halls of residence there was a pay phone, and always a queue to use it too!

Mum, ring me, it's urgent. 'Can i cook a gammon steak in the oven?'
I've failed, haven't I?😱

Can you? I’m 66 and I honestly don’t know.
I knew someone years ago who, when his mum was in hospital, he and his dad boiled a pork pie in its wrapper. I think they also made tea in the kettle 😹

SometimesTheIntrusiveThoughtsWin · 22/07/2026 18:29

Because he couldn’t find nivea sport shower gel in the supermarkets. I had to explain there was a men’s toiletries section.

Cailin66 · 22/07/2026 18:30

My eldest, mid twenties, rang me last week on how to attach a hoover bag. First thing I asked was it is the same type as the one you took out, obviously not, they said what difference does it make as all you need is to connect the hose to the hole. Housemate had purchased the wrong bags, I recommended emptying the old bag and reusing. And that a tweezers would be useful. That was the end of the hoovering.

NetZeroZealot · 22/07/2026 18:30

If my DC phone me it’s nearly always a request for money.

i get texted photos all the time of (very) minor injuries & asked if they need to see a doctor/ go to hospital etc

We had to put my son's duvet on the roof rack when we collected him....

My American son went to uni in England. After a few weeks called and he told me all his house mates did was to get drink, get drunk or try to get him drunk. He said it had got out of hand, as could hear them all vomiting as he spoke to me.

The following day he called me in a panic telling me he was dying. Being 5,000 miles from him I was very anxious - to say the least. Anyway, he called the number for non-emergency health advice. A doctor called him back and informed him most of the kids at his uni had that vomiting bug and not to worry too much.

Seeline · 22/07/2026 18:44

'How do I get a bird out of the house?' 😆

To be fair I've had a total of 8 years of uni queues, and I've forgotten most of them. But sometimes you do wonder whether they actually noticed anything happening at home during their first 18 years!

It amazes me that some adults just call mum and dad rather than google something. This a generation who are always on their phones.

although my brother is 40 and still calls my parents when he has any problem because they didn’t tell him from a young age to try and work something out for himself.

also a lot of the time it's a nice excuse to have a lottle connection with home and speak to mum and dad :)

Sewaccidentprone · 22/07/2026 18:57

Ds sent me a lovely photo of his broken toe titled help.

he was 18 and didn’t know why it looked weird.

Sewaccidentprone · 22/07/2026 18:58

Just what I wanted to see - big hairy man foot with a purple toe

? Had you never changed a light bulb before you left home?

Some of these are really puzzling to me.

In fairness, with light bulbs now, I can’t remember the last time I changed one, except for a weird lamp, so it’s possible for someone now to head to uni having never had to change a light bulb at home

DapperDame · 22/07/2026 19:06

My most cherished[?] was "Mum, how do you unblock a toilet?"

This response shocked me the most! You must have a towel program… and a hand wash program… and what if you want just a quick rinse of something? You can’t only use one program surely?!?!! 🤭😉

"You can’t only use one program surely?!?!! 🤭😉"

I am very much like that poster.

"You must have a towel program… "

Just been and checked - nope. There are 16 programmes:

Mixed
Eco Cotton
Cotton
Synthetics
Delicates
Wool
White
Duvet
Rapid 30 min
Full Load 45 min
Shirts
Baby
Anti Stain 40
Anti Allergy
Spin & Drain
Rinse & Spin

Frankly, around 95% of the time I just use the 'Mixed' cycle. I will occasionally use the Cotton cycle just for DH's shirts and, when necessary, the Wool cycle for jumpers etc.

Other than that, I don't bother with any of the other cycles.

JennyChawleigh · 22/07/2026 19:08

I use delicates for everything because it's quick and uses water at 30 degrees. Nobody's died yet.

Ineedcoffeenow · 22/07/2026 19:09

DDs flatmates considered her to “have her shit together” because she knew how to use a tin opener. They had been baffled by it.

AustenitesUnite · 22/07/2026 19:10

DB phoned home to try and settle an argument between housemates . . .

They had been discussing how much washing up liquid they needed to use for a bowl of washing up and one of them was convinced that if you used too much, you could get poisoning because the residue would stay on the plates/mugs etc and would dissolve into the food or drink and poison you!!!!!!

If this is the worst message/phone call you get while he's at Uni, you're living the dream.

😬🫣😱

38 and completely au fait with laundry

What made you think about this two decades later?!

My daughter moved to Scotland, she called me from the supermarket to ask which washing powder she should buy. I didn't mind, I was happy she called me. Plus I have a lot of opinions so could answer any of her questions.

And dry your hands first.

And put wellies, Crocs or flip flops on.

Poppins2016 · 22/07/2026 19:15

I remember visiting a friend at university (20 years ago 😱) and teaching one of her housemates how to change a lightbulb...

She also had to teach them to wash up properly.
