I'll kick off with:

"What temperature should I wash my sheets and towels at?"

He'd been there 9 months.

@ about 3.30am (😳) had a call to ask if i could ID a bird singing at that time in the morn.
🤷‍♀️…. no I’m not a birdsong expert!, why did you ring me so early ?
oh is that the time? -well I knew you’d wake up, being such a light sleeper….
I suppose, at least it wasn’t a horrible emergency of some sort 😅.

DD sent a photo of a pile of pink knickers and t shirts. Me “did you mistakenly put them in the wash with something you shouldn’t? They used to be white “. Her “no I wanted them to be pink so I put them in with my red bedsheets so I didn’t have to buy fabric dye” 😆

Not a call or text but my mum went to my sister's student house not long after she'd moved in. One of her friends thought the washing machine was broken because she couldn't open the door just after it had stopped. She was told to leave it a few minutes and she can open it

This baffled me the first time I encountered a front-loading machine. We’d only had top loading ones at home and I’m not sure there was a locking mechanism for the lid.

It amazes me that some adults just call mum and dad rather than google something. This a generation who are always on their phones.

although my brother is 40 and still calls my parents when he has any problem because they didn’t tell him from a young age to try and work something out for himself.

It's lovely if you've got the kind of relationship where a kid can ask - think it'd be a sad state of affairs if a kid preferred to Google than converse!

Cora0 · 22/07/2026 17:06

One of my younger brothers asked if 45 minutes was long enough to boil eggs because most of the water was gone and he wasn’t sure if he should add more. 😂

We have an all singing/dancing washing machine that can be connected to the WiFi should you wish to. Too many programmes to count. How many do we use? One, the one that says ‘mixed load’. It’s not failed me yet!

DD was once making jelly and though the 1/2 pint meant you could add one or two pints. It didn’t set surprisingly as she went for as much jelly as possible…She was only about 7 though and hadn’t come across fractions written down!

This response shocked me the most! You must have a towel program… and a hand wash program… and what if you want just a quick rinse of something? You can’t only use one program surely?!?!! 🤭😉

Is broccoli expensive?

When i went to uni my Mum made me a little booklet with all sorts if useful info. Deciphering washing instruction, numbers for local taxi companies, a few simple recipes etc.

Carriemac · 22/07/2026 17:13

Who buys my tinfoil?

HelenaWilson · 22/07/2026 17:14

How did students survive before mobile phones and Google?

When I was a student, you took your stuff to the launderette. (Or washed a pair of knickers and tights in the sink, if that was all you needed at the time.) If in doubt, I looked at the washing instructions on the label.

They used a landline.

DS's first term at uni. "What do I need to put on my shopping list for the supermarket?". I was completely flummoxed & said that it depended what he wanted to eat! I never really got to the bottom of what he was asking but he seemed to manage!

HelenaWilson · 22/07/2026 17:18

They used a landline.

No student digs I or any of my friends ever lived in had a landline. You had to go out to a phone box to make a call.

Same here. It’s never let me down.

Answering these questions is our only shot at immortality. For generations the washing temperature advice will be passed down parent to child. That's your mark on this world. Sorry it wasn't like the taj Mahal or something, but it's quite impressive.

😂😂
The most memorable phone calls weren't the many cooking related ones.
We're having a party and we've stuck egg boxes to the basement walls to dampen the noise. (Sleepless night worrying about fire).
I'm in hospital, they might need to operate. ( They didn't but it was another sleepless night.
When i went to uni my Mum made me a little booklet with all sorts if useful info.
Before uni I did cooking lessons and wrote a book like this. Everything from laundry to how to source the cheapest ingredients.

So you could have used that then!

'What do you do with kale?' was my all-time favourite.😁

The answer to this is simple - you cook it in coconut oil so that it slips out really easily when you throw it all in the bin!

My children called rather than googled random questions and I think it was just a way of saying hi and keeping connected.

My exH thought the same when making Angel Delight and I found 8 bowls of strawberry milkshake in the fridge. He was 33.

Bought my 1st house 26 years ago and still phone my mum everytime I buy curtains. Can never remember if the sizing is per curtain or for the pair 🤔.

Tabarnak · 22/07/2026 17:21

DC’s friend, telling me with huge consternation that they could not possibly use the oven in their (fairly grotty) house share as ‘something is wrong with it, it is extremely dangerous’ and they had called the landlord. On further enquiry :” it has actual flames coming out from the bottom”

Oh right: an old fashioned gas oven
