I'll kick off with:

"What temperature should I wash my sheets and towels at?"

He'd been there 9 months.

angieloumc · 23/07/2026 19:46

My DS, how do I know which is the hot or cold tap?
My DD, there’s something wrong with the cheese you bought me it’s a big lump (not grated)

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 23/07/2026 19:56

Does this means he has been sleeping on the same sheets for nine months?

If so l would tell him to put them in a black plastic with some discenfectant and throw them in the bin.

Jay3004 · 23/07/2026 19:58

In this case I’m the guilty party. I remember phoning my mum when I was at uni asking “how do I clean a bathroom”. One of my flatmates also asked me how she would know when the water in a pan was boiling 😂

JayJayj · 23/07/2026 20:00

I moved out at 22 or 23, and I remember calling my mum, while I was at Asda, asking about what steak to buy! I’m 40 now, I’m sure I’ve had to ring not long ago to ask something 🤣🤣

DBro and his Uni housemates were doing their first Sunday roast (pre internet). He rang me to ask if he needed to put the veg on to boil at the same time as the chicken went into the oven to roast.

In fairness, he is now long-graduated, happily married with kids and an absolute master of the roast. His Christmas dinners are epic.

My mum would have answered yes.

My dd once called me in a panic because she thought the drier was the washer in her dorms and put her laundry in the drier with detergent.

One of my younger brothers asked if 45 minutes was long enough to boil eggs because most of the water was gone and he wasn’t sure if he should add more. 😂

I make a Middle Eastern slow cooked egg recipe where you cook them low and slow for minimum 12 hours! But to be fair you do need to make sure you periodically top up the water 🤣

I use delicates for everything because it's quick and uses water at 30 degrees. Nobody's died yet.

Oof... doesn't actually get your clothes clean too (they'll smell nice, thats not the same thing).

Washing at 30 does not kill bacteria and get things clean and most of the cleaning is as a result of the agitation of the clothes in the drum - the delicates program has much less agitation.

I don't recall calling Mother for anything except to find out why she hadn't put my allowance in my bank account or money on my lunch card (college, I was 16, not 18) - but a mate of mine did NOT understand that you cannot put frozen chips in the cupboard and expect them to still be good weeks later.

Itsalittlebitwarm · 23/07/2026 21:01

University in the 1990s, a shared phone between 5 buildings, no privacy in downstairs foyer. What we did was ask someone else, usually an older student. It worked lol 😆

Answering these questions is our only shot at immortality. For generations the washing temperature advice will be passed down parent to child. That's your mark on this world. Sorry it wasn't like the taj Mahal or something, but it's quite impressive.

😂😂😂 reply of the month.

Oh, my student house in 1990 had a landline. It was very useful….. incoming calls only!!!

Mine too in early 90s. It was only in my third year we got a proper phone (92/93!). How times have changed (not sure it’s good or bad we’re more available to them).

It's also a turning point where you hope they might actually start to realise they don't know everything

Not uni but, my daughter (then aged 32) took her car for petrol for the first time. She rang me to say "they don't sell petrol...only 4 star and diesel. What do I do?" I don't think she's progressed much (at 46) as she forgot to plug in her car last night and only had a 31 mile range when work is almost 45 miles away. Luckily her partners car was fully charged and they live closer to his work.

HiCandles · 23/07/2026 22:55

I called my granny (having tried parents first but they'd not answered) to ask what spirit that I might have was closest to vermouth for a recipe I was making. No clue now what on earth I can have been making!

TheOldWorldIsDyingTheNewWorldStrugglesToBeBorn · 24/07/2026 00:08

Uni friend moved into a new flat. Could not get the washing machine to work. Finally a flat mate took pity and asked her to show him what she was doing. She was repeatedly pressing the off switch because “off for off we go” 🫪
Friend’s daughter arriving at uni in a UK capital city - in her native country - rang home to ask if was safe to drink the tap water. She was studying medicine. 🤦🏼‍♀️

This response shocked me the most! You must have a towel program… and a hand wash program… and what if you want just a quick rinse of something? You can’t only use one program surely?!?!! 🤭😉

I have a WiFi one too with 1000s of settings. I have 2 that I use and I’ve named them normal one and quick one Wink I have steam but I’m too scared to use it. Never had steam before and I’ve not suffered from any towel related problems!

Mumwithbaggage · 24/07/2026 00:45

And we wonder why young people struggle with life! Mine would get a very rude answer if they asked me some of the very daft questions on here!!

dearprudence65 · 24/07/2026 07:35

My uni age daughter was spending the summer Inter-railing around Europe with her boyfriend. One of her wisdom teeth was playing up so she sent me a photo of it and wanted me to take the photo to our dentist at home and ask them what she should do. Her bf was studying dentistry at the time…

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 24/07/2026 08:55

My DSS is not uni aged yet, but, as a letting agent we have had a fair few calls that cover quite a few of these points, so I should be well prepared if he does head of to uni. We’ve all just got to keep him alive til then given he has hit the teenage years 🙈.

Seajaye · 24/07/2026 09:29

In the days If Google doesn't the ' Mum knows best' inference give you a nice warm glow, as well as a smile? .

lilkitten · 24/07/2026 13:15

My mum still reminds me that I rang her from uni to ask how to cook peas 😂And I somehow wanted them to help me get rid of a frog in my doorway 100 miles away (tbf it's still a massive phobia and I probably would have just left the house and never gone back if a housemate hadn't sorted it).
The towel issue though, I'm 48 and still see it up for discussion. Mum told me to do them at 60, everything else at 40. But then I would see how you NEED to wash everything at 30. It's a minefield. I don't blame them for asking as everyone may have a different answer from their mums (and AI).

oldmoaner · 24/07/2026 13:20

A friend messaged saying I've washed my hair and put those plastic rollers in, it's still really wet and I need to go out in half hour. I said well use the hair dryer! Reply was, "are you sure? I thought it would melt the plastic rollers."
Same person also said I can't smell the fabric conditioner in my clothes at all, I asked how she had used it, washed by hand, rinsed, added fabric conditioner, then rinsed in cold water again 🤦

Would you not rinse fabric conditioner then? Surely your machine does ? You rinse off hair conditioner.

Wonderknicks · 24/07/2026 17:13

No, fabric conditioner goes in the final rinse, it's not rinsed out.
