I'll kick off with:

"What temperature should I wash my sheets and towels at?"

He'd been there 9 months.

I called my dad crying at 1am because I’d tried to change a lightbulb and the electric shock had knocked me off the chair I was standing on and across the room. Dad suggested I try again with the light switch off.

tinaabbot · 22/07/2026 17:22

Not at uni yet, but she was by herself for the night. Her apple smelled funny, she sent a picture asking if was ok 😆

In fairness, she texts me or rings me about a lot of the random stuff that runs through her mind, or if she’s got flustered about something and needs a bit of reassurance and calming down. I love it, we have a great relationship and I’d hate to think she’d prefer to google instead of chatting

This response shocked me the most! You must have a towel program… and a hand wash program… and what if you want just a quick rinse of something? You can’t only use one program surely?!?!! 🤭😉

What’s a towel programme?

Tell him 90 degrees, minimum, anything else is unsafe.

And dry your hands first.

DBro and his Uni housemates were doing their first Sunday roast (pre internet). He rang me to ask if he needed to put the veg on to boil at the same time as the chicken went into the oven to roast.

In fairness, he is now long-graduated, happily married with kids and an absolute master of the roast. His Christmas dinners are epic.

He should have listened to Terry Wogan: The Sprouts go on in May, otherwise they won't be done in time for Christmas!

Noshadelamp · 22/07/2026 17:28

A few scary phonecalls, the first of its kind:
19 yr old DD calls from a European city 9pm Friday night in floods of tears, "mum I'm being followed, don't know where I am, dropping a pin, on 2% can you order me an Uber?"
Absolutely terrified watching the first Uber circle the area then leave.

Rang DD, she had to move as still being followed, by two men on a moped, dropped a new pin and phone cut out.

Ordered another Uber and messaged him saying I'll give an extra €10 tip PLEASE PLEASE pick up my daughter, she's in the area and being followed.

Held my breath watching the Uber stop for 10 seconds and drive off in the direction of her flat, but had to wait an extra 5 mins after the trip ended for her to get in and charge her phone to ring to say she's home safe.

They used a landline.

No student digs I or any of my friends ever lived in had a landline. You had to go out to a phone box to make a call.

That is a landline.

hahabahbag · 22/07/2026 17:29

I’ll be honest, I didn’t get any silly questions, but I’m a tough mum - mine got laundry baskets for their 16th birthdays and from that date they got to do their own laundry, including being nagged regarding sheet changes. They also had to help cook and do other housework from 16. Any readers with younger children I highly recommend this approach, especially for those who otherwise would do nothing

'What do you do with kale?' was my all-time favourite.😁

Mind you, good question 🤣

Hehe, good old Terry. All the TOGs knew how to get it right so the sprouts could be consumed through a straw. YEARS ahead of smoothies and protein shakes, hehe 😉

ChocolateCinderToffee · 22/07/2026 17:32

My parents weren't on the phone.

I was on my own.

Noshadelamp · 22/07/2026 17:33

Another time DD rang at 2am to say she.gor off the wrong station because the conductor told her her usual station was closed that night, and it was all on darkness and she had to go through the dark woods (I kid you not) so she wanted me on the phone at the same time.
I had such a terrible feeling I told her to go back, turn around immediately and go back and get an Uber from the station.
She did turn round and I could hear the fear on her voice as she said she could hear footsteps, she started running out of the woods and got to the train station just as the next train was pulling in. Someone got off so she went and stood with them waiting for her Uber.

And reach them how to improvise and substitute when cooking. My son's flatmate were very impressed that he could make an edible (if unexciting) pasta sauce with some random ingredients at the end of term when they'd all run out of money.

Greetingscard · 22/07/2026 17:36

My son called in his first month - there had been bomb threat and he evacuated with no keys, phone, money or ID and the police would not let him back in when it was declared a hoax. He borrowed a strangers phone to call and ask me what to do. I had to tell him to flag down a taxi and get to the nearest relatives house ( significantly nearer than me) without mentioning the no money thing and call said relative to be waiting on the doorstep with plenty of cash.

if it’s not sturdy enough to survive the mixed load 60degree setting it’s not destined for a long and happy life in our house…🤣

beigetriangle · 22/07/2026 17:42

'how do I cook rice?'

really? dc regularly cooked at home

One of my younger brothers asked if 45 minutes was long enough to boil eggs because most of the water was gone and he wasn’t sure if he should add more. 😂

Didn't the pan burn? surely after the first 10 minutes or so the water would have all but boiled away? When I was a teenager I almost set a pan alight as I put a couple of eggs on to boil and forgot about them and the smell of the dry pan was what alerted me

My dd informed me that her washing machine has a steam program when I asked her what temperature she washes her sheets and rowels🤢. When I asked if she’s steaming her dirty towels she unconvincingly said no, no, I just wash in whatever program comes on first.

Never heard of this.
What is a steam programme on washing machines meant for ?
Apart from confused students...

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 22/07/2026 17:45

When I was at uni I had my now in laws coming round and I rang my dad to ask what wine he gets (because I really liked it) and it turns out it was Lambrini. He did tell me to under no circumstances cook them dinner and serve it with Lambrini but I wasn’t really sure why not… I genuinely thought it was class.

ItsNotMeEither · 22/07/2026 17:46

Not at uni, on a family holiday but we had headed off in different directions for a few hours.

The text: How big does a cut have to be to need stitches.

Then nothing, no replies to anything, no answering phones for over an hour. They had decided to go to a pharmacy and ask there and it took time to get there. Then they sent me a photo. Took my brain a millisecond to realise that yes, that definitely would need stitches. Then spent my evening waiting with them at a clinic to have that done.

WearyLady · 22/07/2026 17:46

What baffles me is how our teenaged kids think we know absolutely nothing and absolutely everything simultaneously.

oh that's an easy one. Food waste bin.

Kepler22B · 22/07/2026 17:48

My favourite was

“mum don’t panic.”
” I’m in hospital “
” on the stroke ward”

turns out she had mild Bell’s palsy (only that once) and not a stroke. But not a fun phone call.
