Normal stuff you wish you could do

Mine is wear jeans. I have the flattest, most rectangular shaped bottom and every pair of jeans (or any trousers actually) I have ever tried on look horrendous from behind. I have found jeans that look good everywhere but when I turn around its a different story. I just could not feel confident in jeans unless I jave a long top on over the top. I would love nothing more than to just throw on a t shirt and jeans because I just love that look but it looks awful!

The second is drive anywhere beyond my few tried and tested routes. I have been driving the same few routes for years and I cannot deviate from them. When I try its like I have been punched in the face: I can't think properly, all of the signs completely overwhelm me, I become so anxious my heart hammers in my chest and I make really rash and dangerous decisions out of panic. I go into immediate flight, fright or freeze mode and it feels like I am being made to.solve a really difficult calculation while someone is hitting me around the face. When I try to push myself out of my comfort zone (and I have) it usually results in people beeping at me and me pulling over to burst into tears. My tried and tested routes are completely fine and I am safe, careful and attentive on the road.

Anyway, those are two regular, run of the mill things that I feel like I cannot do.

What are yours?

Sing.
finish things I've started

the80sweregreat · 14/07/2026 19:54

So glad I’ve found this thread as there are loads of things I’m rubbish at. I can save money , but then lots of people can do that!

@BogRollBOGOF I really don't think not being able to cartwheel or do the splits will mar your social life one bit . Unless you hang out with circus people .

You haven't met my bestie 🤣

It's more the fact that I never could do them when I was young and it was normal and they'll just be things that I've never done. (And my pelvis never completely forgave me for pregnancies and births so remains tempermental and I don't want to piss it off too much).

I did get the hang of riding a bike and learning to swim in my late teens though. Better late than never Grin

PenelopeJoanSterling · 14/07/2026 20:01

id like to drive with my mini smart car or quad bike , but its the costs

Make an omelette. It ends up as scrambled eggs every single time.

I failed to hard boil an egg recently. A new low.
I was once asked to teach adults with a learning disability to make an omelette, I had to make up an excuse..

Wear nice shoes that complete outfits.
Because having wide, high volume feet is apparently freaky and destroys your sense of taste and fashion according to shoe manufacturers Hmm

Do the splits and a cartwheel. I am resigned to these never happening without significant injury being incurred

I feel your pain! Because my toes are spread out with gaps between all but the smallest two, my overall foot shape is not that dissimilar to how Quentin Blake illustrated The Witches. Shoes are designed for much more pointy feet, except for barefoot shoes and I don’t like the look of those.

Summer’s not too bad since, although I’m limited to extra-wide sandals, they look perfectly acceptable with my nice casual or smart summer clothes.

Winter I mostly live in trainers (I’d love some interesting colours but can’t get them in extra wide). I have some DMs which are the right width but rub at the heels. One pair of flat shoes. It’s really hard to look elegant when you are short with wide feet and have to wear big clumpy shoes or boots in order to fit your toes in comfortably.

Speak confidently without having to think what I am saying (be one of those people where they can just talk easily without thinking about it and it just all makes sense!)

Have an injection or blood test without being squeamish.

Cook! (Never comes easily to me)

One of mine would be wearing jeans too as they always just make me look and feel masculine

I speak without thinking what I'm saying, but I'm not sure it always makes sense!

Cook peas on the hob

I cannot boil potatoes

I wish I could go for a long multi hour walk through the countryside!! But I can't due to disability.

Me too! I’ve done trampers which is really very nice but absolutely not the same.

Ooh I want to try one of those at some point! But there's nothing like getting your blood pumping from a good walk 😭

I also can't make porridge for the life of me. It's always slimy and lumpy.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 14/07/2026 21:58

I’d love to…
Sleep through the night! I usually wake up every other hour, at least. It’s not fun!
Not have anxiety, or migraines.
Be able to eat whatever I wanted, without ending up with a migraine or an upset stomach.
Tolerate the heat and the sun. I have very sensitive skin!
Have an injection or blood test without having a panic attack and running out of the surgery.
Be the focus of attention/speak out loud, in a larger group setting, without going bright red, having a panic attack, and running out of the room.
Have more confidence.
Manage my hair. It just refuses to behave!
Play musical instruments… particularly the piano, harp, viola and cello!
Be able to stand up for myself… specifically, with regards to my manager, who takes pleasure in putting you down and humiliating you… conveniently out of the way of any CCTV cameras or witnesses who work for the same business.
Oh, and speak Welsh. I am one of the few odd ones out, as English is my first (and only) language. Anyone who learnt Welsh as a child was extraordinarily lucky, as it is a very tricky language to learn!

Apply winged eyeliner. My eyes would look immense.

Do you have a slanted brush? Liner pencil and a slanted brush is foolproof

Rabbithill · 14/07/2026 22:44

Dive into water. Same as another poster, I love swimming and snorkelling but it's the thought of my head hitting the water first - it's just so scary!

Also wear knee length boots, high heels or midi dresses - I have very short, slightly bowed legs and these things make them look ridiculous

Dontlletmedownbruce · 15/07/2026 00:48

Be a healthy weight. I can competently and confidently do almost everything else posted here but this I cannot manage. We all have failings but mine is visible 24/7 and always subject to judgment.

numbandexhausted · 15/07/2026 00:52

Not overthink everything to the point of feeling sick with anxiety. It’s so draining, be nice to just do things like go to work and do my job, go for a drink or socialise without the endless overthinking that follows. I still do all these things but I’m sick of dealing with the inevitable consequences that come with it.

Stay in bed beyond 04.30

You must get so much done! Even if you are permanently knackered and in bed by six.

To not be scared of dogs :( it makes life very difficult.

I'm ok with on lead dogs off lead and owner nowhere insight not so much.

EnglishBreakfastTea1 · 15/07/2026 01:09

Never have I been able to make my hair look nice. I can’t plait very well. Chignons are beyond me. In fact any up-dos defeat me. So it goes in a pony, a scrappy clip or I cover it in a headscarf.

i also can’t drive. It’s quite limiting.

i am also very shy so I can’t start a conversation very well with strangers.

Darkdiamond · 15/07/2026 01:21

A few pps mentioned dyspraxia and thats interesting because I suspect I am dyspraxic myself. I managed to pass my driving test years and years ago after a long period of twice weekly lessons including a few failed tests and even then, I just scraped the pass. So when I drive new routes I literally do not know what to do. I told my husband that if I was ever diverted off my regular routes, would park up somewhere and walk home! I mean it! Using sat nav doesn't help as it feels like another thing to process. I can however drive anywhere if someone is sitting beside me telling me what to do. Even if I am on my normal route and see a lot of traffic at the roundabout coming up, I can't look directly at it from afar as it scrambles my brain.

Drive

Swim

Ride a bike

Had multiple lessons for all three and still completely useless….Id be hopeless in a Tampax advert!

Edited

But can you roller skate? 🤣

Random321 · 15/07/2026 01:52

I'd love to be able to tan in the sun.

I have dreams of being a health looking brozened goddess but instead I get freckles and go pink.

SquirrelGG · 15/07/2026 02:02

I know what you mean OP, I do wear jeans but they never look good on my bum

I don't drive at all. I wish I had learned when I was young, but don't want to now

Like another pp I wish I had more confidence in my abilities, I think I can't learn anything new and it held me back in my working life

I wish I could sing - I mean I can of course, but sound awful. My DF had a lovely singing voice but it bypassed me!

PetsPalace · 15/07/2026 03:42

To go a week without thinking about something stupid or embarrassing I said or did years ago that I doubt anyone thought about ever again, if they even noticed at all.
Why have I got a good memory for recalling such things, especially at 3am, but I regularly can't remember how old I am or what day it is?
On that note, do they still ask confused people who the Prime Minister is these days? I'm not sure it's a very helpful measure any more!
