'Trump threatens increased tariffs for wildfire smoke that has 'unnecessarily invaded' U.S.'

I feel like our response should be that we will keep setting fires and blowing all the smoke at the US until they remove tariffs and recommit to CUSMA. Rational responses haven't been particularly effective so why not fight fire with fire? There are 600+ fires in the US right now and one of out firefighters just died in Colorado. Maybe we should not help, and keep ours at home?

My condolences for your lost firefighter. The camaraderie and cooperation between US and Canadian (and other countries') firefighters is to be greatly admired. They all 'run forward when others run away' to help each other.

I live in wildfire prone Calif, although no longer in a wildfire danger zone. I've had friends who have lost everything due to wildfires, one of them twice in two separate fires. Trump using something as devastating as a wildfire for political purposes and to appeal to his MAGATs is deplorable. And ignorant.

Hands across the Border.

PS Can I come live with you for the next 3 years? lol

BruceAndNosh · 18/07/2026 15:30

So I went onto White House website to look at Trumps evidence.
Downloaded it.
This is one of the pages not totally redacted. Others are just totally black

The Constitution has always been interpreted to mean that anyone on US soil, including tourists, enjoys 1st Amendment rights. And the 1st applies everywhere,

Unless, of course you are (are have ever been) a member of the communist party. I mean there are limits.

Peacemaker without parallel.

NEWS: Iran says it has officially exited the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

Deputy FM Gharibabadi announced that Iran has suspended all commitments under the agreement, citing that the US has "trampled on and halted" its own commitments.

"We are no longer implementing them," he stated.

Oh goodie. That means he can stop the war for the 5,847,621th time.

Watched Insomnia last night, the film directed by Christopher Nolan with Al Pacino, Hilary Swank and Robin Williams. Bear with me on this.

One part is when good/bad cop Pacino asks Swank to re read her report and make sure everything is tickety boo. And she discovers discrepancies.

I immediately thought of heavily redacted material that is released for public viewing. Totally meaningless.

Though, spoiler alert, oh not going to say.

I do wonder, if tucked away in the WH attic, there is a draft headline "TRUMP SAVES WORLD !" and everyone in the administration has been tasked with creating world events until it matches the real world ?

Not if the members have loads of money and donate to Harvard when their kids are there.

There are no limits for rich communists,

Oh, I didn't mean communist, sorry. I should have been clear. I should have said "communist" for clarity.

Glad to have cleared that up.

It might amaze you to know that the link you posted is blocked where I am. But I did see a state media article yesterday that told me what the report says. Here it is.

Pew poll finds China viewed more favorably than US; shift accelerated by Washington's 'America First' policies and Beijing's growing role in global governance: experts - Global Times

Does the article I posted say the same as the one you posted ?

Usually, the articles I get are factually true but just miss bits out. The Global Times is really good at propaganda. Spins the right bit's, omits other bits.

It's like I said yesterday here. Trump is just really bad at this stuff. Really really bad.

Thanks to @BruceAndNosh for taking a hit for the team by going to the WH website. And we can see how hopeless Trump is at propaganda. Redact redact redact.... whereas Uncle Xi has full control over what 17% of the worlds population can see on the web, full stop.

Ha ha ha.... and Turd paid them billions for TikTok.... that was already on his side.

I didn't dig massively deep. The story arose from a source I'd give 5 seconds to, rather than my usual 1/4 second. I am well aware it's supporting a narrative the PRC would smile upon.

It does raise the question as to "Is honest reporting on events that are positive for the state" just news or will they always be propaganda ?

Is it propaganda to say the allies won WW2, for example ? Or that the PRC overcame Chiang Kai Shek ?

Good film that. Great atmosphere and cinematography.

Plot holes big enough for an oil tanker to sail through though. Did you notice how well the forest was swept? If they had shot it in Canada the forest floor would have been a mess. The bit where they had to scramble over fallen trees was set up of course. Real American forests are spotless.

:-)

The Global Times is Propaganda by definition. State owned, state run, and until a few years ago was under the control of the ministry of propaganda. Then they changed it to the ministry of information.

And by chance, I watched a film today about WW2 propaganda films. " Their finest". Ok film, not great.

Chiang Kai who ? Mostly blocked. Only the bad bits allowed. And there are loads of bad bits. Sun Yat Sen is mostly blocked too. As is Marx.

Was that CN ?!

Lawks alone, I saw that at the cinema. For a US adapted film, it wasn't too bad ("The Vanishing" anyone ?)

I was pleased it had Martin Donovan in it, who appeared in a few art-house films by the sublime Hal Hartley.

Along with my being reminded of "Fellow Traveller" (with Daniel J. Travanti) this thread appears to be jumping tracks to the film one.

You know that thing where you see news about something you never knew about, and then when you see it, the jaw just drops and... no words come out ?

Yeah ? Example here -

Venice protesters clash with police as Trump envoy’s mega yacht arrives | CNN

"Fertitta, a close ally of and donor to US President Donald Trump, has been cruising around Italy this summer with his family and some staff on his private yacht as part of what he calls a “coastal diplomacy” effort to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary, according to his social media"

Ok... erm.. is there a punchline ?

".... US ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta’s $450 million mega yacht ....."

Venice protesters clash with police as Trump envoy’s mega yacht crashes their party | CNN

Around 300 protesters clashed with riot police in Venice on Friday evening over the arrival of US ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta’s $450 million mega yacht.

I wish I had room for all the sane Americans - but we are accepting many. (and I accept Trader Joe's related bribes - really missing some of our regular purchases). Any chance you have Canadian ties? We have a new thingy (Bill C-3) where Americans can claim Canadian citizenship by descent regardless of how many generations back their Canadian ancestor lived, as long as they can document the unbroken chain of parent-child relationships. A relative of my husband's recently contacted me for help on some of the historical documentation. Her grandfather was Canadian and moved to California in the 1920's.

And thank you for the condolences. There has been such a history of cooperation and neighbourliness that Trump and a number of border adjacent republicans are intent on pissing on. I saw Tim Walz offering assistance and felt like crying. What could have been...

AcrossthePond55 · 19/07/2026 02:03

@Justsaynonow

No, unfortunately no Canadian ancestry, I wish I did have! I read about the new law and wondered if there would be an influx of Americans at the nearest Canadian Embassy.

I'm not able to travel now, but once I can I'll DM you for your TJ's list and head your way. lol
