A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions, or controversies here. Think of it as neighbors (I'm a Yank) chatting over the garden fence or having a cup of tea while the kids play together. Everyone is welcome.

It will be calming for all.

Math, It's not a plug in hybrid. It uses a process called regenerative braking to charge the battery. Basically, the electric motor slows the car when you use the brakes by running in reverse and, in the process, generates electricity to charge the battery. The same electric motor then powers the rear wheels when conditions are right.

A plug in hybrid has a somewhat larger battery that can also be charged by plugging it into a standard electrical outlet, and can then power the car for 15-20 miles of driving without using the gasoline engine at all. That would have been ideal, but I don't think they're compatible with all wheel drive cars.

By the way, apologies for the photo above showing the kids next to their Forester. I used an AI tool to erase their faces, not realizing that the result would be a bit creepy. Well, it's almost Halloween. 😁

Today I chased up a prescription that is now a week late - apparently it has been misfiled, had the nose bits on my glasses replaced as I had lost one, and bought four packets of Beef Gravy (because they are on a 4 for 3 deal), because DH forgot to buy some yesterday and he's roasting a joint of beach.

Love to all.

HildaTablet · 24/10/2026 18:12

I've had jolly japes getting in and out of London today (I had to work, on a Saturday 🙄). There was a train I was hoping to catch but I was at the station in time to get the (delayed) previous one. It was quite busy so I decided to wait for the one I'd originally intended, thinking it would be quieter. The instant the delayed train left, they announced the cancellation of the one I was waiting for 🤬

Then, on the way back, with Storm Boelo raging and London absolutely rammed, the return train didn’t depart because of 'a drunk person lying on the track'. They had to remove him before it could leave. They can’t have had much luck because the train was still sitting there by the time I departed on the next train out…..what fun and games!

Home now and looking forward to a nice cosy evening tucked away from the wind and rain.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/10/2026 20:15

Yes, Sprouts, a PICC.
Hilda, transport nightmare. Glad you're finally home. 🙂
Miss, yeah, am aware of the developmental stage etc. it has been the last two rounds that the Havoc has been so adverse, so lots of prep went into this visit, but, it's a stage. I think I will do topical lidocaine next year if still an issue, though.

Raining here, but seems otherwise calm and 8c. Sorted laundry into 4 piles and one is almost done. Got my mum on the 2nd IV.
Have had a mediocre iced latte, so just made a second one hot and have just finished what should have been lovely toast with my favourite bread, but was cold and a bit too crunchy by the time I got to it. Kids had hard-boiled egg, a pancake and a mix of grapes/cantalope/blackberries/apple slices. Feeling a bit 🤬 today which I think is due to fatigue. Need to get outside as a remedy, so I'll get us in our rain gear shortly.

MrsSPenguinz · 24/10/2026 21:37

Sorry Havoc was upset by the vaccine @Mumtobabyhavoc

Hope DS visits on Sunday @MissConductUS

Glad you are home @HildaTablet

Hope you can get something nice to do for you @Mumtobabyhavoc

The old paint from area we will tile in bathroom is now removed. DH then went out to get brackets and its rather wet and windy here and car got a flat tyre and lost a wheel nut so he had to call rescue services who arrived within an hour and fixed the car and he's now home. Meanwhile I filled in a long form and we had power cuts due to weather but only a few minutes each time and now restored. We are now going to have a Sunday roast dinner a day early. Clocks go back here tomorrow so its gets dark at 4.45pm from tomorrow.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/10/2026 21:59

That's quite a day Penguins. Glad car is fixed. Good plan to cook today just in case sandwiches are needed tomorrow, but hope the storm peters out without further damage.

Just hung up first load of laundry. It was mostly my pyjamas, which I have a lot of. I'm now washing just enough of the kids clothes to fill the rest of the drying rack and have the heat cranked and the fan on to dry in that room. My pj's have taken over the shower curtain rod. Seven sets, I think. 😂

So far have kept tv off all day. It has been nice. I tend to do that on weekends in the morning, but am stretching it. The kids are playing together and I'm referring here and there. Looks like we won't get out as I had hoped.

mathanxiety · 25/10/2026 02:37

I dropped my car off this afternoon at a chain place to get a quote on rear brakes and a new battery. The mechanic got back to me to say I needed front brakes as well as rear brakes, and a new serpentine belt too, and quoted an eye watering price.

I think I'll go back to the independent mechanic who did my oil change a couple of months ago, who only flagged the rear brakes and battery.

I walked the two miles home through the downtown, stopped to buy a greeting card, looked around an independent small book shop, visited the library and borrowed a book, then cut through a park on my way home. The trees have really started to turn. The weather was very pleasant - warm enough for light chinos and a t-shirt - and the park was full. I was nearly beaned by a frisbee.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/10/2026 05:33

Math, my two mechanics have both retired. One was in my neighbourhood, the other about 20 minutes away. I really need my car serviced, but no idea where to go now.

augustuss · 25/10/2026 06:51

Morning! I was looking for a general, friendly chit chat thread. Can I join?
I was thinking as an idea am not completely sure about the clocks going back/ forward an hour, but when I woke up today it certainly felt like the ‘new’ time fits better?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/10/2026 08:48

Welcome @augustuss 🙂
We did our last "Spring ahead" time change and are leaving it permanently now here in Vancouver, BC Canada. Half our country has stopped changing now, a couple provinces never did, and the rest are continuing.

MissConductUS · 25/10/2026 09:44

Welcome, @augustuss and thanks for sharing your calming chronological news. As it says on the tin, all are welcome here. What part of the world are you from?

I'm in New York, and we'll set our clocks back on 1 November. I'm looking forward to it, as I'm an early riser.

I’m in the UK. It felt great in the morning to have an extra hour for myself and to drag everybody to junior park run an hour later than usual!

@mumtobabyhavocAh, interesting! How are you finding it?

MrsSPenguinz · 25/10/2026 11:23

Hope you can get out soon @Mumtobabyhavoc

Welcome @augustuss

Hope can get the car sorted soon @mathanxiety

Interesting clocks are a week later there @MissConductUS

Our clocks are now back but we had power cuts here until about 11am - the cat was not happy his heater went off in the night and whacked DH but then gave him lots of cuddles. Power currently on but very windy and wet. Charging everything whilst we have power.

augustuss · 25/10/2026 14:49

@mrsspenguinz
It’s very windy here too! Good idea to keep everything charged just in case.

Luckily, time change has never bothered me either way.
🤷‍♀️

People made such a stink about it, lots of complaining, there were always doctors talking about increased rates of heart attacks and accidents of all kids due to sleep loss/disruption that the lobby groups finally succeeded in making it a political issue.
Interestingly, we had our provincial election yesterday and the left-ish party in power that made the change this year lost to the conservatives.

For me, I never understood why people just didn't go to bed earlier, and over a period of weeks if needed, to adjust. 🤷‍♀️

MrsSPenguinz · 25/10/2026 23:18

No more power cuts and windy weather seems to be over.

Had sausage sandwiches for lunch and a veg stir fry for dinner.

Removed more old paint and put some filler in. Have arranged for plumber to come and fit DSs bath on Thursday. Will need electrician after for jacuzzi parts.

Also collected a parcel with a jumper in it. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Mumtobabyhavoc · Yesterday 01:14

Glad things calmed down there Penguinz
I love the sound of a sausage sandwich.

Didn't get up to much today other than clean the oven, help my mum and wash bedding. 🥱

The kids and I went into the yard for a bit to blow bubbled.

We're having an early supper in front of the tv:

rigatoni with tomatoes from the garden and sundried tomatoes in oil finished with a bit of butter; sautéed cauliflower, baby kale and the last of my garden's green beans seasoned with Chinese 5 spice; and salmon and prawns with pesto, sundried tomatoes snd feta.

MrsSPenguinz · Yesterday 08:00

That's such a beautiful meal @Mumtobabyhavoc like from a very fancy restaurant, you are very talented. We also washed bedding yesterday.

Our waterbutt is due to be delivered today.

Just having a cup of tea in bed. We will hopefully waterproof the plaster today.

Mumtobabyhavoc · Yesterday 17:02

Thanks, Penguins. Please come by for dinner sometime! 🩷
Havoc took left-over pasta for lunch and I baked an extra salmon filet the same way and we'll have it again tonight.

Did the school run and had a very nice chat with a school mum. Got home and put a load of the kids' clothes on to wash and now have a latte, Baby has toast with butter and we're watching Mr. Rogers on YT.
FYI for any Wizard of Oz / Wicked fans, we're watching the episode that has Margaret Hamilton as a guest - the original WWOTW! 🧙 She seemed so lovely. 💚
It's worth a look.

eta

waterbutt? Will have to look that one up!

MissConductUS · Yesterday 19:15

Havoc, I looked it up. It's what you and I would call a rain barrel for collecting rainwater off the roof. Your pasta meal does look lovely. I'm shocked that you're still getting veggies from your garden.

DS did come by to spend Sunday with us. He went to a soccer (football) game in Hartford on Saturday night with a friend, so coming to see us on Friday wouldn't have been practical logistically. He was with us for our Sunday evening FaceTime call with DD and SiL. They were all a bit shocked when we told them we had ordered the new car. I guess they see their inheritance slipping away. 😂

Thanks for doing the research, Miss. 🕵️

I've got lots of unripened tomatoes in the garden and all we need is a couple days of good sun and they'll be perfect, but I think I'll be digging up the garden for winter this coming weekend as they'll likely remain unripened.
The beans were very good last night as were the tomatoes heated with pasta.
I also did a quick bruschetta with left-over roasted peppers and sautéed sun-dried tomatoes with some of the garden tomatoes on garlic bread. The kids loved it. I'm so lucky that they eat most of the veg I serve them.

Have hung up laundry to dry and it's suddenly countdown to school pick-up and then two things planned after that.

MrsSPenguinz · Yesterday 20:14

The waterbutt is a container which will collect rainwater from the gutters on the new summerhouse / shed. Its also a planter. I have the diverter kit but need to get something for it to stand on as it has a tap at the base for watering cans to use.

Glad you had a nice chat @Mumtobabyhavoc

Nice to have your DS home on Sunday @MissConductUS

I cleaned the kitchen including the cutlery drawer and part of inside of the dishwasher, the laundry room and downstairs bathroom and also got some more old paint off the walls where we will waterproof as by the bath. Electricians are booked for next week. DH has collected some DIY things and has worked on flattening the wall where we will tile.

Will have cullen skink with bread and butter for dinner and having an orange juice. Had a croissant with smoked salmon and cheese for lunch followed by a cup of tea and chocolate buttons.

Mumtobabyhavoc · Today 03:41

I just baked a small whole wheat loaf of bread. Fingers crossed it turned out. Will try it for breakfast. (The hole is from the thermometer).

I don’t know if I’ve had 2 or 3 cups of tea.

The last one was the nicest
