A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions, or controversies here. Think of it as neighbors (I'm a Yank) chatting over the garden fence or having a cup of tea while the kids play together. Everyone is welcome.

It will be calming for all.

Glad your Applecare has been resolved @MissConductUS

We had 2 electricians in all day today and they got everything they needed to do done and DS allowed access to his bathroom. So we have boiler in bathroom switch moved and plug waterproofed as bath when added will add new safety regulations, all bathroom sockets moved to cupboard for same reason, 2 new lights and switches in/by bathroom, laundry room old plug moved for tumble drier to be at right height, new plug for washing machine, new light in laundry room, new light in upstairs bathroom and socket fixed upstairs. They will send a quote for jacuzzi bath electrics. DS kept coming to see whether they were finished but he was very good.

Not got plumber arranged yet though one is at least back from holiday now. We need to put skirting up in laundry room and install worktop, cut to size as wall is uneven, get countertop sink, taps and support and support for bathroom floating worktop or take down, that worktop is old and will go when bath arrives.

The vineyard on Saturday cancelled the volunteer day but am quite glad as doing a lot of physical work at the moment and would prefer to do work here, garden, go out for day or rest.

Having homemade chicken korma for dinner.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/09/2026 09:38

Glad phone issue and electrical work have been taken care of Miss and Penguins. 🙂

Havoc is sick with a cold on top of a UTI. Has been on antibiotics for the UTI since Tuesday night with doses every 8 hours, so next one is in 2 hours at 3:30am. Cold came on last night with mild fever of 38c at 3:30am when we were up for the ab's. I gave Tylenol. By 7:30am fever was 39.9c, so gave Tylenol with Advil and kept Havoc home from school. Has been feeling pretty rotten with the fever but the medication brings it down in about an hour which allows Havoc to eat and has had three decent meals today (eggs, toast, bagels, fruit). Fluids are going down well. 😅
If we follow our usual routine Baby will be next, then me and then my mum. So, in about a month our house will be past this one. 🙄
Great. The illnesses kids bring home from school .... 🤦‍♀️

It's been raining here since yesterday afternoon, so about 12 hours now.

Miss, hoping that storm peters out. 🙏

MrsSPenguinz · 25/09/2026 09:41

Sorry Havoc is ill @Mumtobabyhavoc and hope the rest of you manage to escape.

MrsSPenguinz · 26/09/2026 11:57

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Went out to do things in garden yesterday - cleaned silkies house, cleared weeds and leaves, cleared DSs fruit remains he leaves around, cleaned DHs things he left out after some of the house work. We had pancakes for dinner - I had ham, egg and cheese then white chocolate and kiwi.

DH has gone for coffee with a former work colleague. We should get worktop support legs and silicone sealant delivered to the shop today and DH will collect if we get notification early enough. Plumber hopefully coming on Monday to quote.

We had a leak yesterday as electrician had moved all bathroom sockets to a cupboard as we are getting a jacuzzi bath later. DS then decided to move the washing machine next to the cupboard rather than move the plug and it undid the pipework. All sorted now. The plumber will likely be redoing all that pipework anyway, hopefully next week.

MissConductUS · 26/09/2026 13:17

@MrsSPenguinzYou have certainly gotten a lot done around the house. Is the washing machine unusable until the plumber comes back, or were you able to reconnect it to the plumbing? I had to Google chicken korma - it looks delicious.

@Mumtobabyhavoc How's Havoc doing? Fingers crossed that you don't all get his cold.

The nor'easter is here. It covers the whole East Coast, from the Carolinas up to New England. Reports of power outages are coming in, especially in coastal areas. One problem is that the trees still have all of their leaves, which makes them more prone to come down or drop branches in heavy rain and wind. It hasn't been that bad here so far. We have 0.31 inches of rain so far, according to the weather station on the deck. I have no idea what we'll do for dinner, since cooking out on the grill is unlikely. The storm is now lingering and isn't forecast to be over until Monday.

DH and I went to the pharmacy yesterday for jabs. I got the new covid and flu jabs. He just got the flu jab and will get the covid jab next week. I woke up this morning with a very sore arm and feeling a bit rubbish. Ibuprofen is helping.

While out shopping yesterday, we visited a local farm I don't get to that often and got apples, two gallons of fresh apple cider, and a dozen cider donuts, which are all excellent. I took the pictures on my new iPhone.

Thanks @MissConductUS DH thinks the washing machine is fine to use again now though we are keeping an eye on it but at least the floor at the moment in there concrete / screed with a washable rug as tiled floor will go in after the bath.

Chicken korma is one of the most popular Indian restaurant / takeaway dishes here as its mild and creamy and normally you get it with pilau rice and a naan, we get peshwari. DS only eats plain white rice but does eat chicken korma and loves naan and will eat the peshwari one as well as plain ones. Chicken pasanda is also similar and nice. Sometimes people have vegetable or lamb instead of chicken.

Lovely photos. Hope the storm doesn't cause power cuts. Enjoy your farm shop goodies.

After DH got back from the coffee with his friend an elderly neighbour came over and said DH I need your help my wife has fallen in the garden and can't get up so DH went over and got her back up again and gave them his number incase they need more help.

DH also went to our farm shop - in previous years they've done weekly boxes of veg and fruit you can collect either as a box or choose your own online. This year they couldn't do that with the heatwave and lost an awful lot of their produce. DH bought a box of what they called soup veg - veg which was damaged by weather but fine for soup, 2 cooking apples and some potatoes and we have just had a homemade soup with the soup veg with cream added and nice bread and butter and it was lovely.

I paid the electricians bill - they were 2 boys who only look about DSs or DDs age and have been working for a couple of years, lovely, polite, hardworking boys and very competent. DH has now gone to collect more things for the laundry room / bathroom - 4 support legs, a circular saw, a saw bit, sink, tap, sealant etc.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/09/2026 20:14

Penguins, I've just done a deep dive on chicken korma recipes. 🙄🙂😂
Miss, you farmer's market trips dound very nice. Mmmm doughnuts. 😋

I made cinnamon pancakes with oats stirred into the batter. I had a very little bit of the Kirkland brand maple syrup I always buy, so opened up the new splurge one I bought at Costco, also organic, but single forest. It was lighter in colour and milder in taste. Both are very good and were about $16 each (1l v 750ml).

Watching CNN coverage on the hurricane hitting New England/Maine down in the States. They're saying it is still gaining strength, power outages, trees down, flooding and expected to last into last week. The reason so many trees are downed is due to foliage on the trees causing drag as the wind rips through. 😢 It is an uncommon September storm. Thanks climate change. 🙄

sproutsandparsnips · 26/09/2026 22:08

@Mumtobabyhavocclimate change sucks. Food looks great. Hope Havoc feeling better.
@MissConductUSi love apples. Is cider in US alcoholic? Or just things made with apples?
@MrsSPenguinzsoup sounds delicious. DH has made butternut squash soup this week with squash my father grew and brought a few weeks ago. He has harvested chillies from greenhouse and made chilli jam but overdid the chillies - nearly blew my head off! He’s going to add some sugar syrup.
My brother is visiting overnight on Monday so I am going to make lasagne tomorrow for whoever is home first to put in oven.
DS2 played rugby last night and the team narrowly lost but were very pleased with their performance against an older team. He is busy with college work today.
DS1 has gone back to uni this week. We visited his house last week which reminded me of student days…..

MissConductUS · 26/09/2026 23:16

@sproutsandparsnips, I should have clarified about the apple cider. It's non-alcoholic and really just fresh-pressed apples with the pulp filtered out. I was confused when I first got on MN and read about people getting drunk on cider, as it's almost never fermented here.

Fresh cider here is a bit sweet and very healthy to drink.

DS and Dh are making chicken breasts in a lemon butter sauce with shallots for dinner. We'll have it with pasta, and it's very good. I love the fact that DH taught DS how to cook, and they now do it together while I relax.

OP posts:
Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/09/2026 18:01

Cider reminds me of teenage/early 20's drinking. Here, cider automatically connotes alcohol. Haven't touched it in years. 😂
We also have non-alcoholic cider, also found at farmer's markets.

It's a gorgeous fall day here. It's cool and sunny. Havoc is coughing now. Baby's temp was 38.5 at waking. Hoping (in vain?) it won't get passed to me. I'm the captain of the ship and if I go down we all tend to. 😨

MrsSPenguinz · 27/09/2026 18:37

Cinnamon pancakes sound delicious @Mumtobabyhavoc Hope you escape the illness.

That's lovely that your DH and DS are cooking together @MissConductUS Interesting about the cider.

Enjoy your brothers visit @sproutsandparsnips

DH is making a Sunday roast. We did work downstairs for a few hours - I cleaned the kitchen and entrance area then sorted out DSs bathroom cupboard which the electricians had done work to and left dust and things and cleaned DSs bathroom. DH started doing the skirting board for the laundry room and cut the wooden skirting but then remembered the adhesive he got requires a gun. So he went to the shops which close at 4pm today and got the gun, as well as collecting the sink I ordered and getting a tap. He was about to get wood when he got thrown out of the shop as it was past closing time so he will go back early tomorrow. There seem to be more sockets than we asked for and a lot of sensor lights, that's 19 year old boy electricians for you but its good. Was same price.

mathanxiety · 28/09/2026 04:59

I got everything done that needed to be done this weekend despite a leaking radiator in the apartment upstairs that soaked DD's bed and bedding and required quite a bit of furniture moving, bedding washing, and mattress drying.

The landlord came and bled the upstairs radiator herself, which stopped the dripping, but the ceiling will need to be repaired and the radiator upstairs will need to be examined. Dcat will not enjoy having workmen tramping through the apartment.

I harvested the three ripe red peppers from my deck plants and added them to my half of a quiche I made. DD doesn't like peppers, so her half just has bacon and cheese, and of course eggs. There are three more peppers on the plants that have just started to redden.

It looks as if the hummingbirds have departed for warmer climes. There are wasps buzzing around the feeder. The cicadas have gone quiet, and the crickets have become audible. I walked into the web of an orb web weaver spider on my way up the back stairs two nights ago, and freaked out. Even though they're harmless, they are powerfully built spiders (and their webs are incredible). I do not want to have to deal with a spider in my hair.

MissC I hope the storm won't disrupt you.

havoc hope you avoid the cold.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/09/2026 08:02

It's midnight. Am sitting in Emerg with Havoc. It's busy here tonight. I'm tired.

How big were the peppers Math?

MrsSPenguinz · 28/09/2026 12:48

So sorry @Mumtobabyhavoc Hope you are back home now.

MissConductUS · 28/09/2026 17:56

@MumtobabyhavocHow is Havoc doing? Get some rest if you can.

The rain is finally ending here, so I'll go for a walk.

Umanresources · 28/09/2026 22:38

@Mumtobabyhavoc just checking and hoping that you and Havoc are back home and settled. Keep warm, drink lots and have soup!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/09/2026 22:45

Thanks, everyone. Havoc has been on antibiotics for almost a week for a UTI and developed a cold with fever two days later. Continued with urgency and frequency to urinate then blood in urine last night.
Urinalysis was negative for bacteria and blood last night. Havoc seems better today. One more day of antibiotics.

Fortuitously, had phone appt with our GP today for my mum who asked about the kids, I gave summary and GP is ordering an ultrasound to err on the side of caution. I also messaged Pediatrician the update, but he is unconcerned. 🤷‍♀️

Umanresources · 28/09/2026 23:07

@Mumtobabyhavoc so glad to hear you are back. It’s a good job children bounce back so quickly. Just take care of yourself as well 🥰

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/09/2026 02:17

The kids are now running up and down the hall. Not sure why they are looking up at the ceiling while they do it. Baby is naked. 🤷‍♀️😂

mathanxiety · 29/09/2026 03:39

About the size of tennis balls, havoc.

So sorry you had a trip to the ER. Very glad to hear Havoc and Baby seem to be bouncing back.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/09/2026 06:23

Math, I should have also asked: which type of pepper?

MrsSPenguinz · 29/09/2026 21:04

Glad Havoc seems well @Mumtobabyhavoc

DH went to shop to get a few more things then we had plumber round to assess plumbing needed to move washing machine and add a sink and later a jacuzzi bath and he said he can do the work hopefully on Thursday or Friday for the washing machine and sink. Bath arrives end of October. Then we did some work yesterday and did more today - I have now cleared all bathroom cupboard and cleaned and painted it and DH has been working on skirting board.

DH is now out at a meal with his former work colleagues and will go to a conference there all day tomorrow. The cat saw me moving things from the cupboard and I made a pile of books in the dining room and the cat sat proudly next to his new pile. Then I made a second pile and the cat was not impressed and he flounced off, I was clearly now taking cat space. I had to clean all the things as the debris from the electricians had gone over everything.

Now watching Below Deck and also a BBC programme on DIY SOS where they are getting volunteers to rebuild a house for a lady who had 3 young kids and lost her husband with a tiny house in need of complete renovation.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/09/2026 22:36

Applauding your DIY'ing Penguins! 🤗

sproutsandparsnips · 30/09/2026 21:32

Just catching up - sorry about all the illness, glad Havoc seems to be improving @Mumtobabyhavoc
@MrsSPenguinzso productive as usual!
@mathanxietythe quiche sounds fabulous, pastry is always difficult to make.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/09/2026 21:35

Thanks, Sprouts. Nice to see you here. 🙂

I bought whole wheat flour yesterday. I'm one step closer to making bread.
