Come and tell us your dull and unexciting news 36: Calmly through the day

A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions, or controversies here. Think of it as neighbors (I'm a Yank) chatting over the garden fence or having a cup of tea while the kids play together. Everyone is welcome.

It will be calming for all.

I'm selling my dead dad's house with Purple Bricks and while going through this whole ordeal I've realised i definitely have ADHD!

Have you got your foot spa yet? Hope it helps you 💐

I have it, going to use it tonight, thank you

HildaTablet · 10/08/2026 17:21

Sorry you felt so rough after the shingles vaccination @MissConductUS. I had it a year or two ago and also had a few off days. The main problem was a horrendously sore and reddened/swollen arm that persisted for a good couple of weeks. I normally have no problem with any vaccinations so it was odd, and I wasn’t looking forward to the second dose (it comes in 2 parts). However, the follow-up was fine. The protection against dementia is a big plus.

I was away at the weekend and met friends at Port Sunlight, a lovely ‘model village’ on the Wirral, near Liverpool. It was built to house workers at the Lever brothers’ soap factory in the late 19th century; as well as houses there’s an art gallery (the Lady Lever Gallery, home to a world-famous collection of pre-Raphaelite art), and there was a church, swimming pool, theatre, hospital, schools etc. The idea was to foster a community of workers on benevolent principles. The houses are beautiful and modelled on Arts and Crafts principles in different designs - lots privately owned now. A couple of pics attached.

Wow. It’s brilliant that you’ve identified it.

I have been on ADHD medication for just over two weeks now and stepped up to a higher dose on Saturday. It’s really helping, though I notice when it wears off in the evening.

I hope you can get an official diagnosis soon.

Teanandtoast · 10/08/2026 22:09

I went to an exercise class tonight, I've not been in months and months and I was very proud of myself! ☺️

@MissConductUS We are hanging fire with the new Ted Lasso because DD is off to Skiathos for a holiday for a week. When OH and I were there they were filming Mama Mia there, just the harbour scene and extra tables and chairs were cordoned off for cafe scenes. It was incredibly hot, so I have no idea how they managed to do the singing and dancing in that heat, as well as walking up the hill to the chapel.

@Mumtobabyhavoc hope you are OK. Not seen a post for a while. The wraps on my legs are for lymphoedema, to help with fluid drainage and swelling. It’s incredibly hot in this weather. I’m supposed to keep my feet up as well, but this makes my hips hurt. I’ve bought a fold up bed, as it might be easier to lie down here during the day. I don’t want to lie down in my bedroom and I don’t want to take up the sofa during the day the day either.

@HildaTablet Did you go in the cafe at Port Sunlight? We’ve been there once and loved it. My Grandma, grandad, aunts, uncles and dad lived in a model village, built by a colliery owner. I lived there with my mum and dad when I was 2, for 6 months. They had no bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, pantry and living room.. There was an outside loo and in the next street there was a bath house for the residents. I think everyone had their allotted time. I don’t remember it of course.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/08/2026 02:32

Posted yesterday (late your time). 😀
But, loving you for caring to enquire. 💛

Will posts some news after dinner. 😘

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/08/2026 05:28

Spent too much time on FB the other day. Hadn't been on in years.
Found out a cousin died earlier this year.
Contacted another cousin today who said it had been from cancer.
Also saw posts about a friend from high school who died several years ago. He moved away after grade 10, I think, but we stayed in touch for a bit and I found a letter from him a few years ago which prompted me to Google him and I found the obit. It was nice to read his FB posts and then the lovely things people posted after he died.
I also looked at another cousin's FB who died last year and whose spouse also passed away not long after. Apparently, they both had chronic health conditions. Neither of them were "old."

And, today, I woke up to a shocking message from a friend whose spouse died unexpectedly last night.
Have also been monitoring the wildfires here. We have over 100. At least one family member lives very close to one and is on alert for evacuation.
Another cousin has traveled across country to care for their recently widowed parent who has become ill.

I'm pretty lucky today. I had a very nice afternoon with the kids at a lovely playground.
Sunset was gorgeous.

Am just to going to message newly widowed friend and get ready for bed. Sending everyone lots of 💕. Life is so fragile, isn't it?

HildaTablet · 11/08/2026 16:13

It really is, @Mumtobabyhavoc. Hope you’re OK. You have such a lot on your plate.

@Umanresources we didn’t go into the cafe this time but I've been before. It’s a lovely place. Have you ever been to Bournville, also a 'model' village? Similar vibe….perhaps just a bit odd too!

I’ve never been to Bourneville, but in the Chalet school books, some of the pupils go and there is a good description. I’ve always wanted to go there.

The other model village we went to was Saltaire in Yorkshire, which was a very arty place, with a David Hockney exhibition. I spent a fortune on books and art supplies when we were there. I do remember I had the best hamburger I’d ever tasted for lunch.

I also love model villages for small models. My favourite books when I was young (I still enjoy reading them now) were the Borrowers. I loved reading about when they ended up in a model village and everything was the right size for them.

MrsSPenguinz · 11/08/2026 17:09

Sorry about your friend and relations @Mumtobabyhavoc Hope you are OK, that's a lot to cope with.

Just a quiet day here. DH is in France still and back at his Mums and will arrive back tomorrow around lunchtime. His twin brother and his family are there today. Tomorrow DD leaves here and goes there to Paris at MIL and 3 boys who have cycled 400kms will join her there. She is very worried there will be enough to eat for the boys but normally there is enough food for an army there so am sure it'll be fine.

Watching more of the American Experiment on Netflix currently on episode 3. When I finish or if I want something lighter will watch todays Below Deck on Hayu.

Crazy busy few days here !

Mum had some eye procedures/operations on Friday.

She had had a trabulectomy (for glaucoma) in December but the pressure was still high.

So she was booked in for a needle bled to reduce the scarring.
They also decided to do her cataract opp as well

I have /had been staying with her organizing her 2 hourly drops !

She is not the most patient of patients !!

But ,,,she is still alive ,,,so that is a positive 🤣🤣.

What has wound me up so much this time round is all her friends telling me and her what to do !!

Drops are every 2 hours and they are different drops...

write the timings down bizzey so you will remember .

Doing drops while her friends were visiting...

bizzey'smum ....put your head back ...

These are a snap shot of how frustrating her friends are !!

🤣🤣

bizzey · 11/08/2026 19:07

I have. Spread sheet on going for her drops .
We are not new to drop s.
She had been on them for ages !!

MissConductUS · 11/08/2026 20:36

Havoc, sorry you had so much bad news. I avoid Facebook, so I don't experience this much.

Penguinz, safe travels to your DH and other family members. It sounds like he's having a fine trip in France.

Bizzey, well done caring for your mum. The medical advice from her friends is worth exactly what you've paid for it.

DS texted us yesterday that he's passed his six-month period at his new job and has been given a laptop so that he can work from home one or two days a week. He has a home office here, with a folding table and extra computer monitor and a few other bits, so he wanted to come over and pick them up. DH got everything moved for him so that he could just put it all in his car on arrival. He stayed for dinner, and we got a takeaway. It was lovely to have his unexpected visit. He's very excited about being able to work from home, even though he has a very short commute.

Catching up with all your news!
@MissConductUSsorry you’ve been under the weather but love the wildlife photos!
@Mumtobabyhavocyou have such a busy life and thats a lot of news! I think social media can be very helpful but open to people making stuff up and other people frothing at the mouth at fake news!
@UmanresourcesI'm going to confess, I thought a model village was a miniature one like in bourton on the water………now I'm seeing it’s not what you meant. Maybe like the Back to Backs in Birmingham which I loved going to……
@bizzeyi think I would ignore the well meaning advice. I think you are doing a great job.
DS played first friendly of the season on Saturday. They were awesome and won their first game for over 2 years! They have had a few new, excellent players but the core of boys that stuck together through all the tough times have had their reward! The whole team was so happy.
Quiche and salad for tea and I can take leftovers to work.

MrsSPenguinz · 13/08/2026 22:14

Hope the operations have worked and your Mum is recovering well @bizzey

Well done to your DS @MissConductUS

That's great they won a game @sproutsandparsnips

DD is now in France with her 93 year old French grandmother and 3 boys from Oxford who cycled there from London. They watched the eclipse with special glasses and have been into Paris. DD returns to Oxford in a few days.

DH is back from France and had a lovely time. I got notice yesterday that planning would be visiting our house tomorrow afternoon to take photos re the shed application. DH and I went gardening for 3.5 hours yesterday, I cleared up a lot of branches from the dead tree which was cut down which had landed in our garden and DS had distributed around the garden. Then we cleared some leaves. DH watered the plants and lawn with a watering can. I cleaned the silkies coop. Today we tidied downstairs quickly and went to RHS Hyde Hall to get some plants for the garden which we will plant tomorrow morning. It was 35C here today so too hot for planting. The traffic was unusually heavy today but was nice to get out. The plants are now in the garden in their pots and have been watered.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/08/2026 22:54

Yes, way too hot, Penguins. 🥵
Glad everyone had such a good time in France.

I blitzed around indoors vacuuming then pulled fridge out and vacuumed and washed the wall, then back and top of fridge. Also got a large load of laundry washed and hung up and got my mum's IV's done. Fed everyone.
Have had kids doing school past few hours: French vids with songs, numbers, colours, alphabet and now have moved on to English Telling Time.
Going out shortly, though. Wildfire smoke has returned, but just hazy and high so far. Want to get outdoors while we can

sueelleker · 14/08/2026 09:16

A squirrel seems to have taken up residence in a tree in my NDN's garden, and my spaniel is going mental. She barks at everything anyway (reactive rescue) but is absolutely going crazy at it.

bizzey · 14/08/2026 10:44

Mam is doing well , thank you to those who were asking. Still a bit sore but recovering much better than the last time she had it done.
She even went out last night to an evening wedding reception thing for her neighbors.
I got her ready and took her in a cab and then got the bus home .
She looked lovely .

Back to hospital today and hope and pray that the pressure is down .

JugfullofRoses · 14/08/2026 15:23

I'm staying at a friend's house and after my shower this morning, sprayed it with the shower shine she uses. Was surprised because it seemed to work pretty well. I squeegee and dry mine off each time at home, which is a right pain.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/08/2026 15:43

Woke up to a massive thunder storm a short while ago. The rumbling was so loud directly overhead. It has pretty much passed now, but I had to close some windows as the windowsills were quite wet with the downpour. We sure need rain, but not the lightning, although I love it.

Oh you lucky people! We're getting pretty desperate for rain here, had an email from South East Water the other day saying they were about to implement drought restrictions that may include switching the supply off altogether for periods of time. Fortunately there's only 2 of us and we stored several cubies of water a few weeks ago when there were supply issues in the next county. At least we'll be able to use it for the loo and washing if not for drinking, although DH is an avid prepper so he'll be able to go into smug mode when unboxing the water purifying system he bought a couple of years ago.

MrsSPenguinz · 14/08/2026 17:40

Thanks @Mumtobabyhavoc Please send the rain our way though today 34C is forecast to be the last of the heatwave and rain arrives on Wednesday and from then rain for 4 days out of 7. Mid 20s from tomorrow.

Glad your Mam is doing well @Bizzey and hope hospital goes as well as it can.

Hope some rain comes your way soon @JugfullofRoses

Got an order from the baker today, got seeded sourdough, white sourdough, cinnamon buns and biscotti. Then DH and I cleaned downstairs and tidied up and then went outside to plant some of the plants we got yesterday and clear some leaves. We had to stop early as we were due a visit from planning re the shed application. Had that now, was quick just some photos.

We will plant rest of plants tomorrow.
