A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I also see that lurid allegations about George Osborne came from a woman who’s admitted stalking him and his wife and will be sentenced later.

I remember the MN left being all too happy to circulate the offender’s accusations.

This is pretty obvious I realise, but I increasingly think the GM mayoral election on 30 July may be the decider on whether Burnham calls a GE soon after September.

If Labour wins - by any margin - I think he’ll see it as Reform’s weakest point since the last GE and will act. If Reform wins, especially if they win quite easily, he’ll stay his hand, IMO.

I’d be interested to know what the Green vote in GM as a whole might be, inc pro-Pal vote lenders. The Green vote in places is apparently high (Gorton result) but in others low (Makerfield). That could be v important.

Could be. I've heard/read that his polling is likely to be at it's highest ever point around October, so thats the period to watch if AB wants to go to the polls apparently.
I genuinely can't guess how the mayoral election will go. GM covers vastly different areas, as you point out. I think its a mistake for Labour to see Makerfield as a Reform slaying excercise. It was a vote against Starmer.

Thanks, off to Google that for more details.

Also do Mayoral elections get the same turnout that general elections or by-elections do? I don’t know.

Yes, along with the fact that David Cameron got up to no good with a pig’s head which according to some definitely happened. Proof, though, seems to be sparse.
I hope Osborne’s stalker is suitable punished as she put them through hell.
Also do you remember that serious weirdo Carl Beech who made the most ludicrous accusations to Tory MPs and high ranking soldiers causing irreparable damage to his victims?
He was egged on by Tom Watson and naturally believed by some on here.

It will
be interesting to see.

The Burnham bounce hasn’t materialised so far. Starmer is dragging things out and this will eat into Burhham’s honeymoon period.

On the other hand Farage is not too present, but the Green are still picking up votes.

I don’t think he’ll call it, unless he’s believing his own hype too willingly.

Was October the time people suspect he might set an election, or the potential date for an election.

It kind of gives me some hope that there will be some common sense around the budget, if it's after and filled with dread if it's before.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 03/07/2026 09:20

And they are running out of time to call it.

No one wants a snap election late in the year.

The Beech accusations, and Watson championing him, was the worst and most damaging stupid conspiracy theory ever in the UK. It hurt and caused harm to so many people so badly. And the police share blame too.

Watson did apologise after he went to the Lords.

But I still find it incomprehensible that anyone with any judgement and common sense believed any of the nonsense. Beech got 18 years. He’s out on licence now.

Not sure, just that this is likely to be the period of temptation for him due to high polling. Other PMs have had their highest polling three months in, then its downhill from there.
As others have said though, Starmer's manner of departure is eating into any honeymoon period AB may have.

I missed the whole storm in a teacup re Osborne. Googling now I can't find anything recent at all. The poison pen writer apparently had anonymity at the time.

It was more than a storm in a teacup, the allegations were horrendous, and repeated on here at the time. I've seen a poster on MN repeat the allegations of drug use as fact only a few days ago.

The spite of the left knows no bounds!

All they're doing is illustrating why Labour should never be in government. How are the Labour fans spinning this one as being a good move?

It’s terrible. As for spin if Labour acolytes can’t spin it they ignore it.

Turnout was just over 32% at the last one in GM. I suspect turnout will be much higher this time.

As for tax wiggle room - the TUC head was saying he thinks CGT needs to be equalised some more. Good idea guys. Let’s bury some more SMEs..and as for tax warehouses to fund rate cuts on pubs, what does he think is going to happen to jobs for warehouse staff? They’re already under threat from robots.

Johnson took office in July, then went to the polls in December for a mandate. Not saying AB will do the same, but its possible if he believes his own hype.

So true.
There is comfort in knowing that I won't see another Labour govt in my lifetime. They'll have to wait for the next generation to gaslight, who won't remember this govt.

DH thinks though that Reform and Restore will split the right wing vote and mean we get a Labour government anyway

It’s quite possible but also possible that Greens split the left wing vote.

Johnson did benefit from that timing. Not sure if AB will get the same bounce but I guess we’ll see.

Then everyone will swing from there want be a GE how dare you suggest it to yeh GE

It is possible AB will stick to wanting PR so if he wins with it in the manifesto the GE after that would be very different.
