Does anyone else feel anxious and depressed about this weird heat and climate change?

Greedybilly · Today 16:16

This week I've felt a horrible sense of foreboding and sadness. It's felt more like Thailand than Yorkshire and it's just not right.
People are clamouring for air conditioning but fighting fossil fuels with fossil fuels ( i.e climate change with things that run off leccy) can't be right can it? The dying wildlife snd wild fires are awful. Even a box of salted caramel Lidl cones can't lift this awful feeling of doom
How do others feel?

Hot,had hot flushes up till a couple of years ago, replaced by hypertension meds which cause.hot flushes, skin cancer. No foreboding or sadness. I lived through the heatwaves in 1957, and 1976.. not so much as a fan, water turned off to houses, collected from standpipes in the road.. a 16 month draught. No fridge or freezer. We used our pension lump sum on solar panels and batteries, have a portable air conditioner unit. In 1957, the heatwave culminated in hailstones as big as golf balls, which caused a huge amount of damage and injuries.

ABOOO · Today 16:25

It would seem most of Mumsnet do, judging by the multitude of threads.

Spaghettimonsta · Today 16:27

Its summer. Its hot. Just enjoy it 🫪

CyrtainFlop · Today 16:30

I hate this heat, but I am accepting of the fact that climate change is real and will have a big impact on all of us in the long term. It's not as if it's a surprise. I think the human population will reduce significantly but our species will continue.

Mysticguru · Today 16:32

It isn't going to change whilst ecosystems are being destroyed. And planting a tree doesn't cut it anymore.

The UK had a drought last year and no water. So lets build a million new homes. We don't have the water to supply the infrastructure now

Let build AI centres. HS2, Extend A1, Lets build Universal studios in Bedfordshire and concrete over 400 acres or so. And this is just Britain. Get my drift?

oliviaAustin · Today 16:33

No… but then I haven’t actually felt particularly hot this week. Very weird because usually I’m terrible in heat. My house is cool, I feel pretty normal. But then this winter I was cold to the bone so maybe I’m just thawing. Im currently schleping home on the bus with loads of shopping and not finding it any harder than usual.

It’s a heatwave. It won’t last long.

wonderstuff · Today 16:35

I’m with you OP, it’s really sad and scary I think. We’ve known about climate change for at least the last 40 years but even now there seems no urgency. I have solar panels and am going to get some portable ac, this is the second heatwave this year and it’s only June, I’m finding it unbearable. It’s not an unusual once in a decade event like 76, it’s the new normal.

BelleEpoque27 · Today 16:45

Yes, though I'm more sad for my child knowing he'll have to live his entire life through this just getting worse. I have zero faith in it getting better, because the psychopath billionaires are in charge and they simply won't spend their money on anything for the good of humanity.

And yes, like everyone else I'm planning to get a portable aircon unit, thereby becoming part of the problem. I hate it.

DappledThings · Today 16:58

Yep. And angry too. Especially today when the forecast was for cooler temps and plenty of showers. Neither of which have materialised. Even the bit of storm overnight was so mild it didn't properly break the heat.

Watching the sky cloud over a bit now and starting to feel a bit of relief. But next week now set to be roasting and dry again. It's just relentless and horrible. It's only June still. We could have at least three more months of this.

Glitchymn1 · Today 17:03

Yes I think it’s worrying, it’s been incredibly hot. I worry for our animals, we aren’t used to it. I suppose future generations will adapt, it’s much hotter in other countries. I’m guessing air con will become the norm.

I’m more worried about AI and data centres than the weather at the moment. It’s much cooler here today thank goodness.

Its summer. Its hot. Just enjoy it 🫪

Easy for you to say. Some of us have health issues or take medication that makes us far more susceptible to extreme heat. The last 3 days have been absolute hell for me.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · Today 17:15

Yes l felt quite desperate and trapped Thursday night, it was overwhelming.
I am feeling much happier today thankfully.

Although I don’t think being excessively anxious helps, I also don’t think being flippant about climate change does either. It’s not just about being hot, extreme heat has massive economic knock on effects as well as to people’s health. You only have to look around the world to see the dangers. Every summer now, wild fires, flooding, drought conditions. It’s really no joke. Also, if you’re someone who has chronic health issues, there’s no ‘ just enjoy it’. 🙄The last week has been hell for me because of this.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · Today 17:35

Yes I feel the same. So far it seems that the reality has been worse than the models predicted and I think carbon emissions are still rising so I don't hold out much hope. At least it puts all other worries into perspective. I wish I hadn't had children and I had mine 21 and 23 years ago.

concertinacornflake · Today 17:40

Yeah it's all real now.
Think it's natural to be a bit saddened by it, it's shit.

Newstartplease24 · Today 17:43

Yes. I feel really trapped and desperate in this weather, like being trapped in a nightmare. I feel worse for my kids. I’m not coping. They hate it too. I adore my kids and thinking about them living through far worse than this is the only thing that makes me wish I’d never had them.

AI can fuck off. Who bloody asked us? Did anyone consent to this nightmare?

Greedybilly · Today 17:44

@Spaghettimonstahahahaha great advice!
It's not summer though is it? Unless ur a bit thick?
Also I have a chronic illness so not that simple....

@Newstartplease24exactly I feel trapped. I can't bloody breathe and I'm worried for my kids and their kids 😔

@Nannyfannybanny- so, what's your point? Not being facetious btw

OP posts:
hattie43 · Today 17:49

No . I just don’t like extreme heat for the sake of my dogs but we’ve had plenty of heatwaves before .

Agreed, if I knew what I knew now I wouldn't have done. Not just the climate crisis but the unemployment crisis. I do wonder what's in store for our youngsters.

Sunshineandrainbow · Today 17:51

I feel anxious if what's to come.strughle to heat house in winter and sizzling this week.

Feel sad of what it will be like as dd's grow up and if they have children.

And oddly thinking about when I am older and how it will feel then. Probably not helped visiting a care home this week (work)
