Cancelled holiday due to lack of internet

We were due to go to the Highlands today for a week. The holiday company informed us that the internet isn't working due to a general issue on the area and they don't know when it will be fixed. I was offered £75 off or the chance to change the date .I took the latter.
I'm now feeling annoyed as I think we should have been offered a full refund.
Does anyone know my rights?

Why does no internet mean you can’t go on the holiday?!

CapitanSandy · 27/06/2026 14:22

Did access to the internet need to be a big part of your holiday?

MollyDigby1988 · 27/06/2026 14:23

Id pay more to switch the internet off!!! What a dream!

RocketLollyPolly · 27/06/2026 14:24

I wouldn’t stay anywhere without internet. I know we all did 25 years ago but we previously lived without heating or water and it doesn’t mean we would now.

upsidedowninsideandout · 27/06/2026 14:24

No I don’t agree that no internet should mean a full refund.

Blushingm · 27/06/2026 14:25

Why would you expect a refund for the internet not working? Plus if it’s all over the area how is ot the holiday company’s fault?

Growlybear83 · 27/06/2026 14:26

Im speechless - why does it matter if you haven’t got access to the internet in your hotel for a week? Surely you’re going for a holiday not to spend your time online? I assume you could be contacted by phone on the event of a real emergency?

Sandrine1982 · 27/06/2026 14:27

no internet? Bliss

LondonLass2026 · 27/06/2026 14:29

We went glamping last year and there was precisely zero Internet, and we got on just fine! What's the problem?

SaltyKettleChip · 27/06/2026 14:30

A holiday for me (uk cottage break type) means watching copious amounts on Netflix after long walks; playing my Nintendo Switch, reading my Kindle, playing podcasts and music. No Internet would be a deal breaker for me too and I’m shocked by the people who think it isn’t a big deal.

runningonberocca · 27/06/2026 14:31

I find it quite depressing that you would cancel your holiday because of lack of internet. And I say that as someone who spends way too much time on line- including now on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Surely holidays should be about connecting with each other, enjoying nature, maybe doing some new activities, seeing new sights, treating yourselves to lovely food and drink, not doom scrolling or updating your socials. You definitely shouldn’t get a full refund . Many people would pay to get a proper digital detox!

backformoreofthesame · 27/06/2026 14:32

Both WiFi and mobile internet down ? That’s major

Frequency · 27/06/2026 14:33

Why on earth do you need the internet if you're not at work and are somewhere as beautiful as the Scottish Highlands?

PintofFizz · 27/06/2026 14:35

Does anyone know my rights?

You'd have to look at the agreement you signed when you booked the holiday.

Most of this you could deal with by just downloading media to your device (most streaming platforms allow this) or taking an external hard drive loaded with the files. That's what we've done for years. It's ridiculous that lack of WiFi would be a deal breaker.

CocSoc · 27/06/2026 14:37

I’d be a bit miffed too, esp as we tend to have very active holidays.

So it’s nice to chill in the evenings with doom scrolling and watching tv…. We’ve normally had enough of each other by dinner time!

We also have teens!

It wouldn’t be a deal breaker though, and i certainly wouldn’t expect a refund

Some of us would and do. Wild camping with no heating or running water. Pure bliss.

imeanwtf · 27/06/2026 14:39

As a solo traveller there is no way I’d be travelling to a place with no WiFi or phone signal.

It’s 2026, it’s not unreasonable to expect somewhere that’s advertised as having internet access to have it.

ladycarlotta · 27/06/2026 14:39

Astonished that some people regard doom scrolling as a vital part of their family holiday.

Itscominghometoscotland · 27/06/2026 14:39

Don’t care about internet on holiday. I’d read and relax.

Musicaltheatremum · 27/06/2026 14:40

I need internet when I go away as my dad is 94 and I monitor him via cameras. I phone him too but if he doesn't answer if I see him plodding about then that's great. If there's no internet then I use my 4G signal it's usually sufficient.
I have to say sometimes the internet they do have isn't good enough for streaming. We had a cottage on Skye last November and whilst general stuff was fine streaming was a bit non existent.

I didn’t say it was vital.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/06/2026 14:40

Crazy to cancel an entire holiday due to no internet.

Consider other options eg additional data, dongle, etc if it's very important to you. DVDs if you want film/TV options.

GreekMountain · 27/06/2026 14:40

DH needs to be available for work so we wouldn’t be able to go away without internet access. I think offering a different date is fine, especially as it’s not their fault the connection is down.

Some also wouldn’t. Or some like a bit of both.
