We are in Mexico ,staying in playa del Carmen.
We got here on Monday.
Im just bored now, every day is the same, get up breakfast ,sunbathe, lunch ,pool etc etc
We have had really bad jet lag, waking up at 4am.
Today we managed to sleep in till 6am.
We left resort on Thursday but the heat and humidity was so intense we felt faint.
We are here till next Friday
We have trips next week booked for Isla murajes,Cozumel and chitchen itza.
The heat is just so intense here
Last night it was 28 degrees with no air at 11pm
I miss my pets and my routine
Dont want to sound ungrateful and I do love holidays
Does anyone get like this ?

I like a nice hang around the pool and beach holiday and I wouldn’t get bored. But I wouldn’t go as far as Mexico to do it. Somewhere in Europe is fine if that’s all you want to do.

ThePoetsWife · 28/06/2026 21:20

This is why I do activity holidays or short city breaks - I find beach or pool holidays boring

My family and I were in Playa Del Carmen last summer and had an amazing time. It was very hot, so we made sure to do lots of water activities. Have you visited one of the local cenotes? Very cheap with cold fresh water swimming in a beautiful setting and lots of locals and tourists. Or perhaps a day trip to XelHa. One of my favourite places. In the evening maybe try Xplor Fuego.

FeistyFrankie · 28/06/2026 21:22

Playa del Carmen is kind of boring. Can you book a day trip to Tulum? Arrange to go and swim in a couple of cenotes? I'd arrange a few more things over the next few days. Should be loads of tours and activities for you to do there.

Take a taxi to fifth avenue (5 minutes ish, depending on where your hotel is) it's recommended to go in the evenings when it's cooler. There's lots of people about and it's a good atmosphere. Lots of bars, restaurants, shops - small souvenirs, bigger brands and designer shops etc...
Its definitely better to go in the evenings when the temp is much more comfortable and will hopefully break up your day a bit. Mexico can be stifling with the temperature and humidity, especially in summer!
I also thoroughly recommend the pirate ship cruise, it's in cancun, but every excursion will will collect from pdc and take you back (around an hour travelling each way) it's so much fun! Its cooler as its in the evenings and you have the sea breeze as well.
Mexico is fabulous, I hope you end up having a wonderful rest of your trip!

Staying at a hotel in any country gets boring. Where you are staying is incredible - the diving and marine life are amazing and the ancient wonders are breathtaking.

Diving around Cozumel was one of the highlights of our trip…such beautiful fish and crazy cenotes under the water. Get scuba diving or at least snorkelling.

Hire a car and drive to Chichen Itzá really early. Merida is a gorgeous old Mexican town on the way there…stop for lunch on your way back. Don’t go on the coach later - it will be boiling and take all day.

There are better ways to do this holiday - you need to do it more independently and not follow the herd on organised coach trips.

Also, go to Biosphere Sian Ka’an while you’re there. Beautiful marshlands and lazy rivers to float down…manatee families and all sorts of birdlife and crocs. Plus, you can swim with turtles early in the morning and there’s an amazing lagoon close to where you are too. There was a really cool jungle where we tracked howler and spider monkeys. Unforgettable. It’s all
so close to you! Don’t waste the chance to have the best time!

You've got Xcaret and Xenses just down the road which are both amazing and cenotes near by. The Cenotes are are lovely and cool and pretty amazing to swim in.

What water sports does your hotel offer?

Havent been on holiday in over 20 years. If i did though, the pool would be my second home. I love swimming, but haven't done that in over 20 years either as UK public pools are grim, plus outdoor pools are way better.
Get up for a nice breakfast i didn't have to cook, lots of pool time, then a nice dinner in the evening and sit outdoors with an ice cream in the warm evening air either poolside, outdoor seating area or on the balcony. Not leaving the resort bar maybe visiting the beach (i'd get hotel as close to beach as possible) or a local shop for drinks/snacks would suit me just fine.
No way i'd go anywhere as far or as hot as mexico though. I've only left UK mainland twice, majorca at 10, mainland spain at 14. I can't actually imagine what it's like having a mobile phone on holiday, as i only had a pay as you go nokia back then, but having the internet for evening entertainment sounds great.

It is about choosing a holiday you will love and investing in it whilst you are there

Some people love large hotels, all-inclusive resorts and endless entertainment. I know they're perfect for many, but after years of leading schools, they leave me feeling strangely institutionalised – queues, wristbands, secure gates and timetables. That's not my idea of a holiday.

Instead, we've just returned from a beautiful small Spanish city where temperatures reached 38°C, yet the winding streets of the old town were built for shade and slow living.
We slipped effortlessly into the local rhythm: morning coffee and breakfast in the plaza, a trip to the bakers for warm, freshly baked bread, shopping at the market for fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. Afternoon either a siesta or time reading on the roof terrace. In the evening, lingering over traditional tapas, sherry and local wines in family-run cafés where the food was exceptional, loads to try and wonderfully affordable.

We watched a simple, beautiful wedding unfold in the plaza and watched through the doors the service taking place in the most ornate church, we toured a local bodega, enjoyed sunset drinks at a rooftop bar, spent time in different tabancos and cervezias.
We caught the local service bus to the municipal outdoor pool and the train, one stop to the beach.

We chatted with friendly local people, practised our Spanish, and for a little while felt less like tourists and more like part of the community.

For me, that's the real joy of travel – not escaping life, but experiencing someone else's way of living.

Edited

This sounds amazing

I like to do two holidays a year. One is a 10/11 day coach trip across Europe and doing excursions every day. Or a four day city break. Then I like a week somewhere hot where I just read by a pool and go in and out of the pool and repeat.

I realise I’m quite lucky. If I could only choose to do either or then I’d choose the former.

Are there any people there you could make friends with? Chatting can really break up a day nicely. Have you got good books with you? I hope you manage to enjoy it a bit more.

OneLimePombear · 28/06/2026 21:51

The jet lag will gradually get better.

How about booking one of the X parks for one day this week?

Does your hotel offer water sports, if if does this would break up the day? Or try aqua aerobics or any other activities on offer. I find doing one thing in the morning and one in the afternoon is good.

Or you buy a really good inflatable and use that, eat at different restaurants, get engrossed in a book or go to the spa?

Noras · 28/06/2026 22:24

X Carat is good especially the shows - are you going there?

B9waiting · 28/06/2026 22:31

We did Mexico a couple of years ago, staying near Playa Del Carmen & found it quite boring too. We did all the things you’ve planned plus Tulum, a number of cenotes & a water park. It was ok but I’d not go back.

Grohlette · 28/06/2026 23:30

I went scuba diving with Bull Sharks in Playa Del Carmen in February…just saying! We stay in Isla Mujeres , we love it there, much better and more local Mexican than the mainland. Go to The Joint and El Patio when you go there and hire a golf buggy, and go round the island!

Bull Sharks 😱Are they the biggest unprovoked attacker of humans, along with Great Whites?

I am surprised you are allowed to scuba dive where there are bull sharks. Were you in a cage?

IDontHateRainbows · 29/06/2026 00:41

Yes, i avoid those kind of holidays now. Prefr to have several city breaks or short uk holidays than a big sun sea sand one. After 3 days I'm ready to come home.

Chichen Itza is absolutely AMAZING! See if you can
take a trip for a swim in a Xenote (cave pool). The water is sooo cool!

Was also going to suggest this! I was lucky enough to have one to myself for a couple of hours once - amazing.

God no I can safely say I do not get like this

Maybe you need to go on less holidays so you actually appreciate a holiday

Everyone defines a holiday differently. I am a frequent traveller, absolutely love it but the holiday that OP is on at the moment is my idea of hell - I don’t enjoy lazing around at a resort/on a beach whatsoever and get bored of it very quickly. Instead I like my trips to be jam packed with lots of different activities and sightseeing. I can lounge around on my sofa at home for free so really don’t understand why people fly and pay ££££ to do solely that.

hnwis · 29/06/2026 06:50

We went to that part of Mexico last summer & I totally relate. It was too hot to enjoy anything.. oppressive is an understatement. The pool days were ok but yes the same each day…the resort was one of many dotted along a freeway .& there really wasn’t much to see/do for day trips - the cenotes were nice but even an evening out to nearby town was unbearable due to the heat. It was also all £££ & you’re right the jetlag was awful & simply not worth it. Put it down as one of our worst holidays & couldn’t wait to get home! sympathy to you.. especially as by time you get back looks like we’ll be in another heatwave here too!!

Well yes but then you don't book that kind of holiday do you

outdooryone · 29/06/2026 08:14

You need a different type of holiday.
I have done a few beach type trips and found them boring, the worst of mass tourism and heat is overrated.
My holidays are now cycling tours, campervan and more cycling or climbing mountains, one did a few days canoe touring down tepid rivers to the med (glorious!). I've had one really bad weather trip - that was a fortnight ago in Ireland, but the rest have all been good, I'm only ever one or two hours different time zone, and it's cheaper.

QuaintOrca · 29/06/2026 09:03

It's personal preference, for some that's the ideal switch off holiday, good food, good drinks and lots of nothing but sun! Personally, I can't stand those holidays.. if I want to do nothing I live a 30 minute drive from the beach and I have a deck chair in my garden. For me, holidays and travel is all about getting out there, seeing sights, history, culture, eating out etc. I need a rest day after a holiday usually!
