Please do not ask overweight people if they have thought of losing weight

Im currently overweight/ obese.
Ive had a lot of health problems over the last 20 years, a chronic pain condition and nerve damage from an accident I had in my teens aggrivated by a RTC in 2003.
Lack of mobility plus medication and disordered eating have led to this gradual gain. Im also in full Menopause
In the last few months my medications have finally been sorted and with the guidence of a dietitian Ive lost 4kg - 21 to go. Now because of an ED I went through in my teens I have to be very careful- any hint of " diet" and my brain goes into overdrive, at times triggering binging, other times triggering starving myself for multiple days.
So based on 2 conversations this week ( and many over the last 20 years) -
Please, please do not ask an overweight person if they have thought of loosing weight - its none of your business, you have no idea of how or why they are overweight and if they have an ED.
Please dont tell then to just go " on the jab" - that is not an easy fix- I have friends on Ozempic and they are doing well but the side effects are not pleasany plus for anyone who has suffered from an ED its not a good idea.
Weight gain or loss os a complicated matter .

It must be a relief for you to read that this actually never happened op! I mean if it hasn't happened to the previous posters then it can't have happened to you either...

PillsBox · 23/06/2026 11:09

Are you talking about anonymous people online or people in real life?

If it's the former, people often bang on about things they wouldn't normally say out loud so I take them with a pinch of salt.

If it's the latter, I'd say it's unusual as weight is such a taboo subject, especially if someone is overweight.

Don’t be so overly sensitive, no one said it didn’t happen. What was said is I’d never experienced it. It must be vanishingly rare for randoms to approach someone amf ask them if they considered losing weight. Very unusual indeed. Pretending it’s not and we all encounter this is ridiculous.

More than 2 over the years !2 this week. One was an acquaintance from a volenteer position and the other was a work client.
As for the thread about the airline seat ...look at some of the responses.

What they just randomly walked up to you and said hi meno. Ever thought of losing some weight?

Backedoffhackedoff · 23/06/2026 11:14

No normal person asks this. At least it helps you identify the cunts

Well they kind of are, one a volunteer one a client. It’s hugely unusual. You’re posting like you think this happens all the time so you need to tell people not to do it. You’ve had two this week and multiple over the years.

and the jabs no they are not a quick fix, they are a tool to enable, but 80 percent or so have no side effects at all.

" If you lost some weight you'd be really pretty - have you tried the Keto diet? "

" Oof youre a big girl, you should get on those weight loss injections"

Wow, I think you should report both of them, that’s not remotely normal or usual. You work with some really odd people.

Because you posted like you had to tell people this, like you thought it was common, so pointing out it’s rare is important

alsp this is a chat forum, you don’t get to dictate what sort of responses you get.

Iheartmysmart · 23/06/2026 11:25

I wouldn’t dream of it. I’ve lost 16lbs in the last four months by cutting carbs and doing more exercise and have another 14lbs to go to get to my ideal weight. My sister is 4 stone lighter after gastric surgery and has another four to go. We both had very different reasons for the weight gain and have chosen to lose it in different ways.

Not massively common, but it does happen.

Honestly! I’ve just seen a thread and half the suggestions are ‘lose weight’

Oh I’d never considered that! Thank you old wise one!

I’ve just lived my life fucking hating myself because I didnt realise it was as simple as ‘just’ losing weight!

Agree on line it’s a thing, but the op is talking about real life.

My dad told me after I gained some weight during uni that he was too embarrassed to go on holiday with me due to my size.

My work friend told me that I should lose weight, as I have a pretty face. That was in person too

When we announced our engagement my FIL who I’d met twice at this point suggested that the wedding would be good motivation for my DW to lose weight… and bridesmaid too, you should both lose weight

I'm not remotely sensitive. It's not my issue. You seem really angry though, why?

I just find it odd when someone posts about something they've experienced and people reply with 'it doesn't happen to me' as if that's case closed.
