Andrés Escobar, the captain of the Colombian team, scored an own goal in the 1994 World Cup and was shot several times a couple of days later by three men who approached him in a carpark in the early hours. It was said by a witness (who called an ambulance) that as each shot hit him pone of the men shouted "Goal!" It was a singularly horrible business, somehow. He was in his twenties and on the way up in his career as far as I ever found out.

Nah, he's the right type of immigrant.

You mean English ?

Yup. I wrote English and not Brit cos it's football, and he played for England under 21. Tripple nationality it seems. British/Nigerian/American. Born in US cos his mum went there at 7 months pregnant and the airline refused to fly her back. Born there and returned to Britain 2 weeks later. FIFA rules say can switch allegiance when they turn senior. All totally above board. But now he can't switch cos he is set as American per FIFA rules.

Same sort of scenario as Boris. He was US citizen till 2017 or so. And Boris is crap at football so far as I am aware.

I remember the rules from years ago, so could be wrong. Because the PRC has "naturalised" players on it's team. Who played international at under 21 for other nations. And there was a bit of a kerfuffle when they started playing for China. Especially given that China does not allow other nationalities to become citizens. And then during qualification for this WC there was another kerfuffle cos China accused another country of using naturalised players.

I also remember at the time there is another FIFA rule about State Government influence on the sport. FIFA lets China away with that but punish other Asian nations.

And FIFA and the US just broke that rule too with the red card thing.

I don't know why FIFA bothers with rules really.

Yes, in a total irony fail, he decided that being American wasn't worth the taxes.

I meant useful to the USA, in a way that suits Trump. But your post is interesting.

FIFA want the PRC at the world cup finals. It is big in the Uncle Xi plan. Host the WC and win it by 2050. He has near the whole country working on it. And they are dire. They are trying all sorts to make it happen, but they miss out the important bit. That is everything has to be controlled by the Party. EVERYTHING. There are no clubs as such. Not for anything. All has to be within the Party.

The womens team are good though. I think because the Party pretty much leaves them to it.

Even the Romans had the Blues and the Greens (and technically reds and whites) in sports and then politics.

Apparently.

I wonder if the Bamfords are still cool with Farage.

I figured CNN was a reputable enough link ? It just shows that so far Trump has only cost each US household $2,784 so plenty more to go yet.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/07/2026 14:25

Thanks! If it's something long about a thing I am not really interested in I won't want to click on it, you see.

He's making the red card thing worse!

Rambling on Sky News now "I spoke to Gianni, I asked for a review, I told him the best players should be on the pitch..." oh my.

DuncinToffee · 06/07/2026 15:31

FIFA can't deny Trump's interference, Rubio has just congratulated Trump on overturning the card and Trump himself is boasting about demanding it.

DuncinToffee · 06/07/2026 15:32

Indeed Tokyo

Spandauer · 06/07/2026 15:36

Ted Cruz has also contributed an arse licking approval of Trump's interference in red card debacle.

🍊💩 is now suggesting that the ref is a dodgy person with a criminal past.

Oh, and now he's an expert on football tackles and how they should be played.

He just can't fecking shut up.

Trump confirms that he asked Gianni Infantino to reverse the red card on Falorin Balogun -- and also suggests the referee is crooked "if you check his past."

"So yes, I asked for a review by FIFA. I spoke to a man who‘s highly respected and, by the way, who‘s level of respect has gone up tenfold."

Do you think he thinks the red card is some sort of communist manifesto...?

And he's on at the referee now (from the BBC website):

Trump continues: "This referee, who is a little bit suspect. If you check his past, I don't want to say that because I don't like to create controversy, but very suspect... if you like I'll provide you with the past.
"He made a call that nobody could believe. Even people on the other side, they were saying 'we got lucky, wow'."

Is libelling sports referees an official presidential act ?

Also, would a lawyer argue that FIFA owes it's employes a duty of care and protection from harassment. ?

Would be my first 2 questions for an AI agent of my choice.

AcrossthePond55 · 06/07/2026 15:46

Re the NATO summit. IIRC Scrotus said the 'only reason' he's attending is because Erdogan 'personally' invited him.

I'm hoping to see more scenes like the recent summit where the other leaders grouped together for a chat and he was left standing on his own, looking the fool.

Yeah, I'm now hearing him on TV going on about the football red card as if he knows it all, which I'm sure he thinks he does. I know very, very little about football, but I bet I know more than Scrotus does. And what I know would probably fill a thimble.

My younger son played Rugby and I only claim a bit of knowledge about that. Both sports (to me) have complicated rules compared to US football.

DuncinToffee · 06/07/2026 15:56

Trump on USA-Belgium: "If they beat us, they can be really proud. The other way, if they beat us, we'll say -- I say it was rigged, just like the election was rigged in 2020, but I won't get into that."

Yup. I caught his ramblings on Sky, and at the end he was on about the ref stealing future games same as the election was stolen. Or something like that.

So he has just totally destroyed any fragment of integrity FIFA had left.

Before that he was rambling about crapto and AI, and it looks like he does not know the difference. On about how he beat Chyna at crapto. But the thing is, China banned crapto years ago.
