In my opinion, if we look back at that time with todays value system as the measurement, we miss what they were doing, why they were doing it, whom they were doing it to, and crucially, the achievements of the past 200 odd years. And there have been many, many achievements.
The US constitution was not based on Athenian versions of democracy, as that was too much power to the people for their liking. Rather they based their system on the Roman version which deliberately curbed the Greek system.
Initially, the Constitution was set up by, and for, men like them. By and large English origin, land owning, educated and christian.
It was not for non property holders, the poor, women, non christians, Black, Indigenous or any other non White. It was for them. When we look back for here - we say - fucking hell - arrogant, greedy, bastards. But, in their life time, that was simply how things were and had been for 1,000s of years. 1,000s of year of living in a Christian orthodoxy and a class system that nobody really thought could be broken.
It took the French Revolution (four or five years later) to finish off that ancient world order. They threw out the baby and the bath water, and killed God while they were at it (by killing the king).
We should remember that the United States at that point was trying to create a country. A brand new country, uniting the (very) different States and avoiding Europeans like endless wars. New Jersey had cannons pointing to New York and were ready to start a war over ....TARRIFS for example.
It is such an exciting and audacious thing, the foundation of modern America (I truly know how savage it was too). I love reading the history of it because, for me, form the get go, it is about human beings fighting for freedom - coming like waves. And the strength of America is that it can take the fight and stay standing. The system can bend.
In a way, in my opinion, they have two major problems right now - the parties are too powerful, too controlling of the process/money, and too undemocratic.
And of course with Trump, it is being attacked from the inside.
