A Wall Street Journal investigationfound that the U.S. is rethinking its footprint in the Middle East after Iranian missile and drone attacks caused more damage than previously disclosed to at least 20 U.S. sites, including the Navy’s base in Bahrain. Here are four takeaways from our reporting.
America’s only naval base in the Middle East was extensively damaged.....
I asked my contact in Kuwait and the reply said that there was more damage to the bases than reported. "We have people taking pictures and it was pretty extensive!'
WSJ estimated a figure upwards of $34M for site preparation and reconstruction alone.
Contact then mentioned the Br Navy in Bahrain, which I wasn't even aware of previously, so looked that up too.
"The Royal Navy maintains a permanent naval support facility in Bahrain, known as the UK Naval Support Facility(often referred to as HMS Jufair). It serves as the UK's main naval hub in the Gulf and supports operations across the Gulf, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean.
The base remains open and staffed by Royal Navy and support personnel.
As of early 2026, the Royal Navy no longer has any permanently assigned crewed warships based there. The last forward-deployed frigate and minehunter were withdrawn due to fleet and personnel pressures, although visiting Royal Navy ships can still use the facility.
The UK base is also located close to the U.S. Navy's Naval Support Activity Bahrain, which hosts the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet. The two facilities work closely together but are separate installations."
So now we know where the minesweepers might be based.
