I don’t know about having to pay, in Bath , to get to the grassy area. I must be Quite out of date. If people are preferring BoA to Bath, it must have gone seriously downhill, as in my mind they aren’t in the same category, even. Potentially Bath is less good than it used to be, then. This is such a trend. Saddening.

Hebden Bridge. Can't live there unfortunately; but glad I live close enough to visit often.

I live here!

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Ludlow. If you like York/Chester, you’d love Ludlow.

6ate9 · 21/06/2026 18:04

Ludlow Castle is lovely. I saw an outdoor performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream when I was a teenager.

A few more from me

Scarborough (North Shore)
Staithes
Robin Hood’s Bay & Ravenscar

Seconded. Staithes is also the location of the best fudge shop on the planet. 😋

I feel like that about Malvern. Lots of people love it and it is indeed a lovely place, but it gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I feel the same about Stroud!

Bath is still gorgeous IMO. The only bad part is the massive quantity of tourists in summer (and during the Christmas market.) But still lovely and has my favourite bookshop of anywhere I've ever been to.

If it’s Persephone Books, that would be the only reason I would ever want to visit Bath again. I was sad that they moved from London.

Persephone Books is such a lovely shop. I order online from them too but I always go there if I am in Bath

I do like Toppings too though

I thought from your username that you were in that area. I love the Piece Hall too.

Ha ha, me too, Stroud is soo off kilter feeling, eek.

NonComm · 21/06/2026 20:11

London - without a doubt. It has city life, parks, squares, the river, canals and suburbs, great transport and so much to do.

Sidebeforeself · 21/06/2026 22:55

Yes Bath made us feel weird too! We had a bad meal in the Sally Lunns place and now every time someone mentions Bath me and DH shudder and say “ Sally Lunns!”

Scunthorpe. Brilliant little theatre, nice parks and arts centre. And home of the mighty iron!

I lmow you're joking, ans the town itself is a dump, but it's surrounded by lovely villages.

Speckson · 21/06/2026 13:04

We used to have a holiday cottage in Slough. It's a great centre for visiting many places and very quick and easy on the train into London. Also local bus service to Heathrow. Black Park has the rare Purple Emperor butterfly... and the chocolate smell from the Mars factory...
As I have always lived on the coast in tourist areas I find industrial areas and towns fascinating.

This reminds me of the song "Slough" by Ricky Gervais, if you haven't heard it give it a listen 🤣

FlorbelaEspanca · 22/06/2026 00:29

Sole Street, Kent. On finishing a section of a long-distance walk there a woman spontaneously asked me if I'd had a good walk, and the village shopkeeper sold me a loaf of bread even though he was closed and had only gone to his shop briefly to fetch something. Then when a week or so later I started the next section of the walk it was the booking clerk at the station who was friendly and asked about my day's plans.

SaraHoliday · 22/06/2026 00:49

Fulford, York (All round great location)
Herons Ghyll, East Sussex (Peaceful)
Lytham, Lancashire (Bit of everything)!

Ooh so did I!

limegreenheart · 22/06/2026 03:30

Already mentioned, but Canterbury really stood out, followed by Salisbury and Weymouth.

JohnBetjeman · 22/06/2026 04:06

Slough.
...oh no! Wait a minute. Not Slough, I meant Aldermaston. You know, where they make bombs.

maxslice · 22/06/2026 05:43

Oxford.

JulietteHasAGun · 22/06/2026 06:10
