Portmerion in wales, just had a horrible sense of foreboding

You are Number Six
I am not a number. I am a free man!

Yes sorry about Bedford, a bit unfair. Mainly based on the bus station.
definitely not the worst place in the UK

Slough. Been through or to it many times and it has a reputation for a reason.

What is its reputation? (genuine question)

whoactuallyreallycares · 20/06/2026 23:13

Long Eaton

TheChosenTwo · 20/06/2026 23:13

@HelenaWilson if that’s a portmerion reference I'm afraid i don’t understand it 😂

Barrow. Hands down.

TheExtraGuineaPig · 20/06/2026 23:13

Yes East Grinstead and Forest Row have an unusual amount of niche religions and things.. something to do with the ley lines and the forest. That’s the good bit though, the town is just very dull.

GustavaKlimt · 20/06/2026 23:13

I drove through Lye in the West Midlands recently. I think the high street was the most intimidating place i have ever been

Great Yarmouth

Although there's some fun places to go there, it's clearly quite grim in places, and Lowestoft wasn't great either (visited them both a few years ago). I saw a family heap some absolutely horrendous racist abuse on a train conductor there too, an incident I found profoundly depressing to witness.

MissVerucaSalt · 20/06/2026 23:14

Surprised to see Portsmouth and Belfast on the list - they’re very nice!

Slough, definitely. Silvertown in Newham, although I believe it’s now been renovated. Newport.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 20/06/2026 23:14

Fraserburgh or Wick, with Middlesbrough in 3rd place.

I've been to Norilsk (look it up), and that wasn't as grim and foreboding as either Fraserburgh or Wick. Driving through Middlesbrough is like a combo of being on Safari and driving through a 3rd World warzone.

Whataflippincircus · 20/06/2026 23:15

Dungeness. Famous for being the UK's only officially classified desert, it features a stark shingle landscape dotted with abandoned fishing boats, distinctive wooden houses, two lighthouses, and the imposing Dungeness nuclear power stations. I felt really depressed when I went there.

The town has clearly suffered since the ferry terminal closed. There's very little reason for anyone to go there now. It's certainly suffering some deprivation as a result, but last time I was there I had lunch in a fantastic cafe.

I was in Middlesbrough for work last year, and finding somewhere to eat that didn't look like it had been condemned was something of a challenge. My hotel room overlooked a derelict office building.

DireBasta · 20/06/2026 23:18

Redcar. It was a very long time ago so maybe different nowadays, and admittedly I was only there a day. I don’t like London either, there again I’ve only visited for odd days mainly for work.

To be fair, it's improved a lot since the nuclear attack in the eighties.

They have hotels? 😳

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 20/06/2026 23:18

Whitby, whole place stank of fish and chips all day long.
Full of dogs and their shit.
Exacerbated by staying in an hotel that made Fawlty Towers look good.
